Wow! We just can’t believe it, our March 7 hatch date is closed already! With that, the season has officially begun. Where has the time gone. Feels like just yesterday the barn was bustling with little chicks!

Fear not! The warm weather is coming, and so are the chicks! Many more dates to choose from for our famous broilers, as well as turkey poults, sexed brown and white layers and now sexed barred rock chicks!!!!

There was a discussion about us being a commercial hatchery, let us set that straight!

I would like to explain to you how we are NOT a hatchery.

-We sell chicks 1 day every 2 weeks, and the opposite weeks for our distributors.
-We work with many government agencies to ensure we stay within government regulations while still being able to expand our business, and YES we have been reported by smaller sellers of Cornish, but honestly only helped us in the end.

-We have no commercial buildings or commercial hatching equipment, on days we do turkeys we have an 8x8 brooder in our garage for “overflow”

-We buy 40 pound bags of medicated chick starter one by one as it lasts us awhile. My kids haul feed to small little feeders with 5 gallon buckets and we have no machines to feed animals, or waterlines, we did however make our own auto waterers with 5 gallon pails and tubing.

-We have zero equipment for doing this, myself and my husband clean out our barn and sanitize after every hatch with our little shovels in the back of our old farm truck and bring it next door for our compost pile in our garden. We spray it down with our little spray bottles and Virkon.

-Our farm pickup day, you are met by me(the wife) and my kids counting our chicks from our small 10x12 little barn by hand and greeting each customer one by one. We have approx 20 people come on our pickup days.

-During the bird flu days, We had people spraying their tires and boots at our front entrance with a little spray bottle to make sure our birds and chicks remained safe.

-We don’t have any staff, we don’t have a payroll, this is a husband and wife duo, while I stay home with the kids, Wayne is a full time truck driver. So this is our “side hustle” and we do not make NEAR what a hatchery does and we would not be able to support our family on this “side hustle” alone

-We have distributors throughout Alberta because more and more people are wanting our chicks, we don’t ship chicks so we carefully choose our distributors who essentially are an extension of us. We are only 2 people so I couldn’t possibly deliver chicks all over Alberta.
Also, because we aren’t a commercial hatchery, we can’t ship chicks, I’ve attached the rules on shipping chicks. This is not the reason we don’t ship, but couldn’t even if we wanted to.

-Now I will tell you what we are doing! We started in 2017 technically as a joke with one little giant incubator, and have worked our asses off to get where we are now. We produce quality and healthy chicks that stand out among others and our reputation and name shows this.

Are we kicking ass? You bet your boots we are!

Do we want to be a hatchery? No, that’s not our goal. Nothing wrong with hatcheries, but we just offer something different, and in is doing so we have gained lots of amazing customers who help make our dreams come true.

Attached are some pics of our little barn we use, our “overflow” brooder in our garage, my kids feeding birds, our little 30 egg candler that we do by hand. My 9 year olds job is to put eggs in trays, no machines.

-We are strict on Biosecurity, but I invite you to come and slip into some of our boots and take a 10 second tour(literally) of what you assume is a commercial hatchery. You will be surprised.

So all in all, No we are not a “hatchery”
We TRULY are that couple on our little 4 acre rented house/property having fun and selling some chicks.

We had a request to do a specialty order of barred rock pullet chicks so we figured we might as well open up a date for those as well!! The requested date is for our may 16 hatch. Since they are a special order they are not listed on our website so if you would like in on our special barred rock hatch let us know!!!

Pretty exciting week for us! Our first order of our Perfect Man beard oil is packaged and heading off to Mullets Barbershop locations! The response on this product has been outstanding!

Weston turned 4 today, boy is he growing up to be a great chicken tender!! Everyone gets to pick what they want Wayne to make for their birthday supper every year and Weston chose fish and chips (of course Wayne got fresh cod) and popcorn shrimp delicious!😋 🤤

Here at Hembrough Custom Hatching our first and main goal is always quality over quantity.

That’s why we offer a select variety of breeds instead of a laundry list of breeds. This allows us to focus on the quality we are supplying and striving to achieve better. Just because other breeders have every breed out there, doesn’t always make that the best choice, ask questions!
How are you able to focus on all those breeds to ensure you’re trying to better the breed?
How do you select your breeding stock? Is your goal Standard of perfection? What is your Biosecurity like? Etc
If you need help selecting a breeder, please message us, we would love to help!

Our barns,brooders, and equipment are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after every single hatch of chicks to ensure peak health.

We may have distributors all over Alberta, but each distributor has been carefully selected to make sure they hold the same value and standards as we do. Distributors have contracts, have to show virtual tours of facility, have strict rules on not mixing other birds with our chicks etc. Not to mention random inspections during the year to ensure our standards are being kept!

Our distributors are an extension of us personally! They also hold the chicks for a minimum 24 hours after picking up from us to ensure the chicks transition after the transport!

This is why we are different!!!!
