NOT PREGGO 🙌 this is best case scenario. This is the kind of greedy, indiscriminate, careless backyard breeding that is fuelling the slaughter industry in Canada. To put a senior mare out with an ‘aggressive’ 1/2 draft stud 🤨. It wouldn’t surprise me if she was pregnant at some point but aborted when she was a parasite infested starvation case consigned to Westlock with a shattered jaw. It would have cost major $$$ to ensure she wasn’t at risk during a geriatric pregnancy. The baby would have been another mouth to feed in what’s already a population crisis.

THAT BEING SAID. She was last out with this stud in late March of this year when she was at peak emaciation. While the ultrasound is pretty much certain, nothing would surprise me at this point 🤷‍♀️

I can’t believe I’m saying this, I just found out that Wendy might be pregnant, anywhere from 5 to 10 months. I just found out she was out with a 1/2 Percheron stud from October ‘23 thru March ‘24.
Thoughts? Am I mad about a potential baby on the farm? No, but nervous. Am I on the verge of lactating myself? Maybe. Are we prepared for a baby? 😱
Anyone with experience foaling? Apparently, the stud was quite aggressive, and that might be where she got her horrible jaw injury from.
Our lovely vet is coming next week to do a pregnancy check. 🤰🏼

AND SHE IS NOT PREGANT 👏😅👏😅

I can’t believe we’ve gone from a body score of 2 to D-I-E-T since Westlock 20-April-2024
It takes a *special* kind of animal abuser to starve an easy keeper. 
Wendy’s jaw is looking better and Walter’s puncture wound is almost healed.
These two are such gentle quiet horses and they sure have helped Valentina through losing her friend Gigi ❤️

How cute are Bernard and Betty ❤️. I’ve not been able to find a foster home since I broke my ankle so I expanded their pen a bit closer to my house for easy access. The pen is 9x18’ I think… 4 small horse panels anyway. I’m running an industrial fan for air conditioning for them as well 🫠. We sure have a rabbit problem on Vancouver Island. How have we not banned the sale of rabbits in pet stores? Bernard and Betty are vaccinated and spayed and neutered and still so hard to find a home. Since rescuing rabbits I have immersed myself in local rabbit rescue social media and boy are they working hard with no relief. Spay and neuter your rabbits and please don’t dump domestic rabbits 🤯.

Vancouver Island folks. I’m searching for a hutch like this. Don’t worry, not for the rabbits to live in but just for a bedroom in their enclosure. I think they would really like it 🤗 we’ve been unable to find any kind of foster situation for them so I’ve expanded their pen for now.

Healing up. He is such a good patient I don’t even have to put a halter on him to clean his wound or apply eye meds. Such a gentleman. For those unaware, Stuart chased Walter into a stick that punctured his shoulder 😣 Walter is 17 and definitely has some old track injuries, he gets a bit sore in the hind end. SAME Walter lol.

Yesterday we laid to rest the most beautiful gentle soul , Golden Granny our Gigi ❤️ she was 21 years old and had been with us since February 2023. She was consigned to Beaverlodge Auction by McLean Quarterhorses out of Alberta. Hundreds of pounds underweight, her mouth was a mess, she had a years worth of foot growth on her and was infested with lice/worms. At the age of 3 a trainer did a sliding stop on her, compressed her spine and broke her back, leaving her permanently disabled. Her back is very obviously misaligned and fused. But it didn’t stop her breeders from turning her into a foal-factory. As a senior horse with a deformed back she was turned out with a stud who would have mounted her repeatedly. After producing a foal in her 20’s she was dumped at the auction with only meat buyers bidding. A friend who walked the whole yard that day said Gigi and Valentina were two of the worst cases there.
In the 1.5 years she’s been with us she’s had over 500 mashes. Every day she would march up to the ‘mash spot’ and stare into my windows to watch for when I got up lol. She got picky. Senior pellets are better than the low sugar pellets 😅. She had no idea what a flymask was and was terrified at first but quickly learned the relief it brought…. She stood for it so patiently. She trauma bonded with Valentina that day and they were inseparable. She saw the vet 4-5 times since arriving, to make sure we managed her comfort level with meds. Her osteoarthritic changes were significant and required pain management. Attempting to auction her off as an ‘open broodmare’ in this state was not only shameful, it’s criminal neglect based on the Requirements stated in the Equine Code of Practice. I’m thankful we got the opportunity to show her a peaceful retirement. Yesterday I picked up a bag of the fancy Purina senior feed and she had double mashes. We set her free today, blissfully unaware with the help of our vet. We spared her from the worst of it. She deserved a Death with Dignity. I’m so glad we got her ❤️ thank you to everyone who assisted in her rescue.

I forgot to mention the vet did an eye exam and prescribed some steroid/antibiotic cream. He has had runny eyes for a while now. I’m hoping he doesn’t have uveitis. That’s a tough disease to battle. He doesn’t squint but his eyes run and he gets goobers. He’s one of the best patients I’ve ever had, and he lets me administer the cream no problem. Hopefully this takes care of it ❤️. His flymask is so important for blocking UV and preventing irritation.

I stand corrected Stuart didn’t bite him, he chased him into a tree branch that went 3 inches into his shoulder 🥺
The injury happed Thursday afternoon, I flushed it with saline and kept the flies off with SWAT cream. I sent a pic to my vet and she said it looked ok, keep it clean, flush with saline. By Saturday night it smelled terrible and there was discharge so I made an appointment for first thing Monday.
Sunday AM I picked up Bute and antibiotics, he started those Sunday morning.
This morning he was sedated so she could prod at it. She flushed out some debris and pus the packed the hole with medical grade, honey.
Walter is such an amazing patient. The treatment plan is to keep it clean
and a full round of antibiotics. It’s an impossible spot to wrap so I’m going to try a fly sheet with a shoulder patch.

Bernard and Betty are under the cedar tree for a couple weeks while we clean out the barn. It’s nice and cool plus I have a fan for the worst days. I’m still looking for an indoor foster for them, costs covered.

Soooo our slogan is ‘A forever home for Senior, Special needs, Disabled and Cranky animals.’ Stuart comes to mind when I think of cranky lol
He has a good reason to be cranky as he was kept in solitary confinement for most of his life so he might be lacking in some herd social skills. I’ve spent months trying to slowly introduce him to Walter and Wendy and it’s not going to happen. Stuart believes Walter has stolen *all* his women and that he needs to push him out of the universe 🫨. Stuart attacked Walter and bit him with his snaggle tooth so bad that I’ve got the vet coming out tomorrow am. He is missing an incisor tooth on the bottom and it’s SHARP. I’ve never seen a bite get infected so quickly!!! Within a day it was infected despite me cleaning it. He’s on Bute and Antibiotics. He’s such a wonderful patient he lets me poke and prod at him.

Everyone got a good dose of fly spray today. The bugs are making them miserable Valentina especially can get some really sore bug bites on her tummy. You can just see how they all relax once they can feel that the bugs have dissipated. I had to go out and buy some low sugar hay for the horses. I can’t believe Wendy and Walter had a body score of two At the auction in April and now look at them, CHONKY They’re on a diet 🫢
