Sunny days 🌞 our lovely vet was out yesterday. Dorothy the goat hasn’t been feeling well, she’s been off her food with some diarrhea. We dewormed her and administered some subQ fluids. She seems to be feeling a bit better. Dorothy and her sister Blanche DeverGOAT were owner surrenders after their family got divorced.

Also, I had her pull blood from Walter for metabolic testing. He’s got some fat deposits that are making me nervous 🤔 He gained a lot more weight than his sister on the same diet. I need to make sure he’s not a laminitis risk, he may need medication and/or an adjusted diet.
Again, how do people manage to starve easy keepers 😢.

For all the Nanaimo residents here, when the HECK did our feral rabbit population get this bad? Everywhere I go there are domestic rabbits breeding 😵‍💫 It should be illegal to breed and sell rabbits on the island. I’d blame the pet stores but after joining Van Island Hobby Farm FB pages I see so many ppl breeding them. Please stop lol. Srsly don’t 🤦‍♀️. Rabbit rescues are over capacity. We have an overpopulation CRISIS. I’d love to be a part of some sort of effort to stop this before a massive cull is organized *again*.
Bernard and Betty are spayed and neutered. They escaped our neighbour’s property when they were breeding for meat. If I didn’t catch them and sterilize we would have a large population of them in our damn yard already.

Thanks to our amazing neighbours the hay is stacked and stored for the winter 🤩 and I got a tractor lesson out of it as well 😀.
14 wrapped rounds makes 10,000 pounds of hay! Our farm is long and a bit narrow so when it’s wet, it’s super annoying to get a truck back to the barn.

Sound.
So why the *% #! were they dumped there looking like this?
The auctions are a dumping ground for animal abusers. The people who drop horses like this are doing it over and over again because they get away with it.
For the people attending the auctions, we have to start calling the SPCA that morning and light them up until they do something. Document everything.
These aren’t instances of good people who had a rough go and need to send their family horses to auction.
We know their names we know their damn addresses because we get them on the transfer papers .
As I watch the woman who starved Valentina almost to death listing more pregnant mares ( Jennifer Gagnon of Pouce Coupe, BC) we see you.

Wendy and Valentina. I keep thinking about all the SPCA cases pushed through Westlock Auction this weekend. Retired racehorses just like these ladies. Their legs are scarred but they have so much life left in them. Valentina came from Beaverlodge and Wendy from Westlock.

Ok I’m trying the intros again. Stuart and Walter seem to be getting along! Walter puffed up like a TICK these last couple months so he will get more movement in as a group. How do some people manage to starve horses that are easy keepers??? In April he was a body score of 2 now he’s on a diet. All it took was a dental float and proper feed.

I turned this donated rabbit hutch into a clubhouse 🐇🏰 I sprinkled some freeze dried strawberries up the ramp. I guess we will see if they hang out in there tomorrow 🤔

I had some amazing friends come and spend time with the horses, all 3 got a spa day today. A young horse enthusiast volunteered doing chores and grooming the horses. All 3 senior ex-racehorses stood like angels and ADORED the attention. These sweet horses have been treated like machines their whole lives. Wendy was first and a bit nervous, wondering what we were up to with a halter in the stall. Once she realized they had brushes she just melted. Walter stood like a soldier and even fidgety Valentina was loving it. They sure deserve it ❤️. Look at their coats gleaming after 🤩

The mules are bummed because I got them super low sugar diet hay lol. This TEFF hay is gorgeous, soft, green and less than 6% sugar. Teff is actually a grain from Ethiopia that’s suitable for metabolic horses and fat ponies. Barbie is prepping to protest this ‘abusive starvation tactic’ 911 SPCA? BARBIE HERE???

NOT PREGGO 🙌 this is best case scenario. This is the kind of greedy, indiscriminate, careless backyard breeding that is fuelling the slaughter industry in Canada. To put a senior mare out with an ‘aggressive’ 1/2 draft stud 🤨. It wouldn’t surprise me if she was pregnant at some point but aborted when she was a parasite infested starvation case consigned to Westlock with a shattered jaw. It would have cost major $$$ to ensure she wasn’t at risk during a geriatric pregnancy. The baby would have been another mouth to feed in what’s already a population crisis.

THAT BEING SAID. She was last out with this stud in late March of this year when she was at peak emaciation. While the ultrasound is pretty much certain, nothing would surprise me at this point 🤷‍♀️
