Another creepy crawly came to visit at the clinic here in Langdon.
Let’s talk about lice:
Lice are host-specific. Human lice affect only humans. Dog lice affect dogs. Cat lice affect cats. Rarely, a dog or cat louse might end up on a human, but it doesn't stay there. Children who have head lice get them from other humans.
Lice are flat, six-legged, wingless insects that can be seen with the naked eye. (This makes diagnosis easy.) Lice don't move much or quickly. They spend their entire 21-day life cycle on a pet. They lay eggs, which are called nits, on the shafts of the hair. Nits are easy to see. They attach only to the pet's hair and look like white flakes on the hair shaft.
Both types of dog and cat lice are transmitted by direct contact with an infested dog or cat, or by contact with nit-contaminated grooming equipment, bedding, etc.
Thankfully there are preventatives and treatments. Talk to us today about how we can help prevent your furry friend becoming a feast.
Jasmine is here to share some fun ways to keep your pet active and fit during winter! 😊❄️🐶🐱
With our Canadian winters it can be difficult to fit in daily walks and other outdoor activities with your pet. Thankfully there are a number of indoor activities that will keep your pet active and entertained.
1. Play hide and seek
Hide a toy or treat and let your pet find it. To start, your pet will need to know the commands “stay” and “release.” Put some treats or a toy on the ground and have your pet remain in the stay position. Then give the release command and tell them to find the treats or toy. Praise them every time they find one. Once they have that down, move on hiding the treats or toy in increasingly more difficult places.
2. Spend time training
Whether you want to work on basic commands or up the ante with some impressive tricks, training your pet teaches control, provides stimulation, and promotes bonding.
3. Give your pet an interactive puzzle
Food-dispensing toys provide mental stimulation and exercise for your pet, as well as alleviate boredom. Some require your pet to roll them around to get the treats out, while others are more complex and require problem-solving.
4. Set up a mini agility course
Arrange boxes, kitchen chairs, and other objects found around your house to create an obstacle course in your living room or basement. Then spend some time each day teaching your pet to go through the course. Once she’s mastered that, change up the course so she can try a new one!
5. Play games
You only need one or two inexpensive items to play some simple games with your pet. Grab a ball to play fetch, have a tug of war with a rope toy, or burn some calories with a flirt pole. All are fun games that will keep your pet active and mentally stimulated!
Share with us some of your pets favourite games!
We are just as excited as Pepper to be racing into this weekend! 🥳 What are your furry friends up to? 🐶🐱
Fleas are a common parasite found on our pets! If left untreated they can cause serious health problems for our furry friends. Let us help you make sure your animals are properly protected from Fleas and Ticks!
