Winter Beekeeping
Hi, I had a great question a little while ago about how my bees were doing in this weather so I thought I would show everyone how I prepared them for this weather at the end of September last year.
I insulate inside the roof of the hive and below the hive. I then wrap insulation around the hive. I also have what is called a spacer with wood chips this acts like a lung in the hive to keep the humidity low. Low humidity is key for them to survive this weather. Hence the bee fondant I provide is quite dry to again ensure low humidity. The queen excluder I use (the grate thing) is normally lower above the brood box during a honey production but here it keeps the burlap used from dipping down and preventing the bees from coming up and eating. Each hive has honey that I left for them but they like my fondant :).
Great day for candy making, Wednesday I will be in the hives replacing the pillow and checking foods levels.
Sunday I was out checking my hives. I really appreciate the support for local beekeeping here in Langford. My honey is now bottled and ready for your table, office, gift basket, stocking stuffer or??? let me know what you use your honey for?
