Does your dog drag you to greet people? Leash pulling is the most common thing I see. Pulling can be from excitement, reactivity, lack of training, or sometimes they’re just being rude. In Hudson’s case, he LOVES people. Maybe a little too much 😂 he’s a smart guy so we did a few quick fixes and replaced his dragging with a structured Heel and Sit for a more polite approach 👏🏼#dogtraining #dogtrainer #dogmanners #langleydogtrainer
🚨 MOTIVATION 🚨
Find your dogs motivators (treats, affection, toys) and use them!
They can help build drive, increase focus, and lure your dog to completing the tasks and commands you’re working on.
My Go-To? Diced up chicken hot dogs. Works like a charm 👌🏽
I spy a Sploot! 👀
Today was our first walk with Ollie! He started picking up a heel command super quickly… with a little treat motivation 🍗
Such a good boy!
The other day, I called Kingsley while we were out at the park and he didn’t instantly come to me. He chose to smell the tree instead. I was shocked, because I’ve been training Kingsley for a year now and his recall is generally flawless no matter the distraction.
But then I realized; when was the last time I actively, purposefully practiced recall with him? It’s been a while. 🤦🏼♀️
Training is everyday. You can’t complete lessons and have a “programmed” dog. Training takes upkeep, training takes practice, training takes patience.
Lesson 1: Heeling! Featuring Niko 🥰
Lesson 1 with Niko!
His humans were having a hard time getting him to walk with them. He would tug or pull and not want to walk any further.
Most puppies don’t like their leashes and collars at first, because they don’t understand it.
By using consistent, clear communication you can take away the misunderstanding and get them to love going on walks in no time 🤩
Also... have you ever seen a cuter puppy?!
Patience and Impulse Control 👌🏽
Practicing patience and impulse control with our 1 year old Doberman today 👏🏼
If you’ve got a dog that’s young and excited, has no patience or doesn’t listen to commands, practice long sits and downs everywhere you go.
Before you open your door, waiting at crosswalks, waiting for their food - seriously, everywhere, all the time.
If you always reinforce and follow through, they will learn that their focus must be on the handlers commands no matter where you are or what you’re doing.
A little 🧠 workout for sunny days!
Structured pack walks are our favourite. Walking nicely with the distraction of your best furry friend right beside you is hard. But the reward of playtime after is worth it.
