There are lots of reasons I wag my tail. You can tell how I’m feeling by paying attention to my tail’s positioning. A hip-swaying, loose, side-to-side wag usually means I’m in a great mood, whereas when I hold my tail high and stiff with a rigid wag, I’m likely in a state of agitation or high excitement.

The type of dog bed I have matters

Pay attention to how I sleep before you pick out a dog bed for me. Do I love to doze off with my legs sprawled out? Get me a flat bed. If I like to curl up, I’d probably prefer a bumper bed. I may even like to have my very own blanket to cover myself up with.

It''s delightful to see pets enjoy the first snow of the season, but it's important to ensure their well-being and comfort in cold weather. Here are some tips to keep your pets warm and safe during the winter, along with advice from veterinarians:

Limit Exposure Time: While it's great for pets to experience the snow, be mindful of the time they spend outdoors. Prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can be harmful, especially for animals not accustomed to the cold.

Provide Shelter: Make sure your pets have access to a warm and dry shelter. If they spend time outdoors, provide a cozy, insulated doghouse or a sheltered area with blankets or straw for insulation.

Warm Bedding: Indoors, ensure your pets have warm bedding. Consider placing extra blankets or a heated pet bed in their sleeping area. Elevate their bed slightly to keep them away from cold floors.

Protect Paws: The salt and chemicals used to melt ice on sidewalks and roads can be irritating to your pet's paws. Wipe their paws with a damp cloth after walks or consider using pet-safe ice melts on your own property.

Dress Appropriately: Some pets, especially smaller or short-haired breeds, may benefit from wearing sweaters or jackets. Look for pet-specific winter gear to help keep them warm during outdoor activities.

Monitor for Signs of Cold Stress: Watch for signs of discomfort or cold stress in your pets. These may include shivering, lethargy, or reluctance to go outside. If you notice these signs, it's time to bring them indoors.

Stay Hydrated: Ensure your pets have access to fresh, unfrozen water at all times. Winter air can be dry, and hydration is essential for their overall well-being.

Regular Grooming: Keep your pet well-groomed during the winter. A clean and well-brushed coat provides better insulation. However, be cautious not to over-bathe, as it can strip essential oils from their skin.

Check for Frostbite and Hypothermia: Be aware of the signs of frostbite and hypothermia. If you suspect either condition, seek veterinary attention promptly. Signs may include discolored or pale extremities, lethargy, and shivering.

Consult with Your Veterinarian: If you have specific concerns about your pet's health or if they have any pre-existing medical conditions, consult with your veterinarian. They can provide personalized advice based on your pet's individual needs.

Everyone suffers when your pet can't bear to be away from you. Your furry friend spends anxious hours wondering if you'll ever return. When the anxiety becomes overwhelming, shredding the couch cushions or chewing the window sill helps relieve the feelings.

Microchipping

Microchipping is the insertion of a small (about the size of a grain of rice!) data device under the skin of your pet to allow their information to be accessed should they go missing. Vet clinics and animal shelters everywhere have scanners to use if an animal turns up, and when they scan your pet a unique ID number comes up which is connected to your information. This makes it possible for you to be contacted and reunited with your lost pet!

Wishing You a Spooktacular Halloween from Murrayville Animal Hospital Langley Vets! 🎃👻🐾
The team at Murrayville Animal Hospital Langley Vets wants to wish you all a howling-good Halloween! 🐶🐱🧡

Today is a day of treats, not tricks, for you and your beloved pets. As your trusted partners in pet care, we're here to remind you to keep your furry family members safe and sound during this spooky season.

Here are some tips to ensure your pets have a stress-free Halloween:

🎃 Costume Cuteness: If your pet is dressing up this year, make sure the costume is comfy, safe, and doesn't restrict their movement or breathing. Safety first, then style!

🎃 Candy Caution: Keep all those Halloween sweets out of reach. Chocolate and some other candies can be toxic to pets. Opt for pet-friendly treats instead!

🎃 Quiet Retreat: If your pet is skittish or easily frightened, create a quiet, cozy space where they can escape the Halloween hustle and bustle.

🎃 ID is Key: Ensure your pets have proper identification in case they get spooked and run off. A collar with an updated tag and a microchip are your best friends.

🎃 Jack-O'-Lantern Safety: Keep an eye on your pets around candles or lit pumpkins to avoid any accidental singeing of fur.

Dental hygiene is crucial for our furry friends, and regular dental cleaning is a vital part of their overall well-being. Just like humans, dogs can suffer from dental problems that can impact their health and quality of life.

Dental cleaning for dogs is not just a cosmetic concern; it's essential for their overall health and well-being. By maintaining good oral hygiene and seeking professional dental cleaning when necessary, you can help your canine companion lead a happier, healthier life. Don't forget to consult with your veterinarian for guidance on your specific dog's dental care needs.

After a long and fulfilling day at the clinic, it's finally time to head back home. 🏡🐾

It's always a rollercoaster of emotions working with our furry friends and their loving families. From healing a sick pup to celebrating a new kitten's arrival, every moment at the clinic is special.

The bond we share with our animal patients and their owners is truly heartwarming. It's an honor to be entrusted with their care, and I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in their lives.

As the sun sets and I drive back home, I'm reminded of the joy and purpose this profession brings. Time to relax, recharge, and do it all over again tomorrow!

Each year almost 5 million dog bites are reported across North America and many that go unreported. Veterinarians and their staff make up a very small percentage of those bites in spite of their obvious risk factors. What can we learn from them to avoid being bitten by a dog?

Being aware of a dog’s warning signs can help people avoid the dog’s teeth. Common sense tells us if a dog is growling and showing its teeth in aggression it will or is about to bite, but did you know there are other warning signs might be less obvious? These warning signs include raised hackles, overall tenseness, and even a slowly wagging tail. Veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other veterinary staff have learned to quickly read the dog’s body language and adjust their movements and actions accordingly.

But even then some dogs don’t show signs at all and can attack suddenly without warning. You must always be on guard and be cautious when working with dogs. But not just dogs, cats can bite and scratch aggressively too

Let us know in the comments what do you think !!
The noise level of a dog largely depends on individual temperament and training, so it can vary within a breed. However, some breeds are known to be more vocal than others. Among the noisiest dog breeds, you might find:

Small Breeds: Small dog breeds like Chihuahuas, Miniature Pinschers, and Dachshunds are often known for their vocal tendencies.

Hound Breeds: Hounds, including Beagles and Basset Hounds, are known for their distinctive howling and baying.

Terrier Breeds: Terriers like Yorkshire Terriers and Fox Terriers can be quite vocal and may bark frequently.

Working Breeds: Breeds like Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes can be noisy, particularly when they "talk" with their distinctive vocalizations.

Guard Dogs: Breeds like German Shepherds and Rottweilers may bark loudly when they perceive a threat.

It's important to note that individual dogs can vary in their noise level, regardless of their breed. Training and socialization play a significant role in a dog's behavior, including their vocalization. If you're considering getting a dog and noise is a concern, it's essential to research and meet with individual dogs to find one with a temperament that suits your living situation and preferences.

Pets have sensitive stomachs and gastrointestinal tracts. While many pet owners think by feeding their beloved pet table scraps is showing affection, it may actually cause a serious medical reaction. There are numerous human foods that cause severe stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting for pets and should be entirely avoided when possible.

A dog’s nose print is unique, much like a person’s fingerprint.

Of course, dogs don't have fingerprints. However, the substitute biometric marker for fingerprints in dogs is their nose print. It has been supposed that just as the pattern of every person's fingerprints is unique, each dog's rhinarium (the section of bare skin at the tip of a dog's nose) has a distinguishing design of dimples, dots, and ridges that, when combined with the shape of his nostril openings, is believed to make a mark that is distinctive enough to conclusively identify one dog among all others.
