Thanks to all our friends at Canada West Veterinary Specialists for this great information!
Leptospirosis cases have been on the rise in British Columbia. This bacterial infection, spread through contaminated water, soil, or contact with infected wildlife, poses significant risks to both pets and humans.
Some pet insurance providers are updating their policies and may not cover treatment for leptospirosis unless your pet is vaccinated against it.
We strongly recommend the leptospirosis vaccine (particularly for dogs who may have exposure to outdoor areas, standing water, or wildlife - especially rats) as it can significantly reduce the risk of severe illness.
Symptoms in pets can vary widely, ranging from fever, lethargy, anorexia, and abdominal pain as the bacteria can invade kidneys and liver - causing acute liver or kidney failure. The bacteria can also invade the spleen, central nervous system and eyes.
This bacteria has a zoonotic potential which means it can be transmitted to people through contact with contaminated urine.
Please call us to see if your pet is vaccinated. This vaccine in the past has been considered a lifestyle vaccine however now with the increase in cases being seen locally we are now recommending Leptospirosis be a core vaccine.
