🦷 Use a pet safe toothbrush and toothpaste. Do not use human tooth paste as it contains toxic ingredients such as xylitol.

🦷 Allow your pet to sniff and lick the toothpaste off your finger to get them used to it. Use positive reinforcement with treats and praise to make it a good experience!

🦷 Gently lift your pet's lips and focus on brushing the canines and molars, where plaque and tartar build up the most. Work your way to the rest of the mouth when your pet is comfortable. Brush for at least 30 seconds on each side.

🦷 Try to brush their teeth at least every other day, or daily if possible to prevent tartar build-up.

Anesthesia-free dental cleaning vs. COHAT: what's the difference?

🦷 An anesthesia-free dental cleaning is a cosmetic procedure that only removes the visible plaque and tartar. Under anesthesia, we can clean below the gum line, where dental disease is most commonly found.

🦷 Under anesthesia, we can do full mouth x-rays to detect hidden signs of dental disease such as bone loss, fractures, or abscesses. If necessary, the diseased teeth can be extracted.

🦷 While anesthesia-free dental cleanings may seem like a safer option for your pet, they can actually do more harm than good by delaying proper treatment of dental disease and potentially lead to serious health complications.

Thank you, Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS), for your incredibly kind words and, more importantly, for the dedication, love, and tireless efforts your entire team puts into caring for the animals in our community. It is a true privilege to support such an amazing organization, and we are constantly inspired by the compassion and commitment you show to every pet that comes through your doors. Seeing these animals receive the second chance they deserve makes everything we do worthwhile. We are so grateful for this partnership and look forward to continuing to make a difference together!

All of us here at LAPS would like to take a moment to thank Brookswood Veterinary Hospital for their tremendous support! In 2024, Brookswood Vet saw 1093 of our animals for life saving surgeries, compassionate and much needed vet care, and spay/neuters. We are so grateful for the partnership we have grown with the amazing staff at Brookswood Vet and we look forward to fostering that through the coming years!
