🧡Valdero, affectionately known as "The Dancing Grandpa," happily gives Lexi the opportunity to guide him through the Prix St. George. 🕺🏽This horse has been an exceptional partner and now schoolmaster to many of my students, earning our deep admiration. At 22 years old, he remains robust, joyful, and full of spirited energy! 🔥

🌼Starting the day bright for our White Fences” training day! Hope everybody has great rides in the practice show ring! 💛

In dressage, the best riders develop psychological strength as a key ability because it takes a positive attitude, strong will, good work ethic, humbleness, stubbornness and overall horsemanship to succeed. You have to accept that success and failure never last in this sport, so you have to take each in stride and not make too much of a deal out of either—it is just another day at work. In the end, the best riders have this strength and an undying drive to continue because a rider still has to take care of the horses and get back in the saddle tomorrow and the day after that since this is not only a sport, hobby or business, but a lifestyle that lasts a lifetime. - Jan Brink

About ten years ago, give or take, the NEDA clinician at U-Mass Amherst was Klaus Balkenhol, the legendary coach of the German gold medal dressage team.

One thing that he said changed forever my opinion about the concept of "warmup."

Klaus said that when he gets on a horse, whether out of a stall or out of a paddock, he always just walks calmly for a MINIMUM of ten full minutes. He joked that you need to time this with your watch, because ten minutes will feel like 20.

He also said that as the horse learns that this will ALWAYS be the case, that the first ten minutes, AT LEAST, will be calm walking, every single time he is mounted, that the horse will learn to start out with less anxiety about the upcoming work.

Then, after the walking, Klaus said that the initial trotting should be to establish forward rhythm, and only after this is obtained should the rider gradually take up more rein connection.

Klaus said that too many riders (I think he was directing this at me!) think of the warm up as something to be gotten through and dispensed with swiftly, so that they can get to the "real" work. Klaus reminded the audience that the warmup is just as integral a part of the "real" work as any other part.

Guilty as charged, sir. But I have reformed! Thank you!

Gustav Rau, the father of the German system, told us:
“The frame of the trained horse can be further stretched, the horse’s neck can be worn longer and freer, the guidance by the rider loose, lighter. The highly trained school horse must, as soon as the rider gives him the impulse, again return to its natural attitude. and not be constantly shortened. Just as it may not always be bent, but must always be quite straight. Even the highest dressage level, as well as the first, must never result in a permanent shortening of the horse in the forehand, especially in the neck. It relies on greater suppleness and the possibility of the lowering of the hindquarters, as the joints reach greater flexion. The horse must never be forced into a form by the harsh action of the rider.”

Incredible opportunity! Proudly offering Grand Prix schoolmaster “Valdero” for lease.

Valdero goes easily in the snaffle or double bridle, has an extensive FEI show record through Grand Prix, CDI experience, helped me achieve my US Grand Prix gold medal and would be the perfect teacher for a young rider or strong amateur.

Valdero is quick off the leg, easy in the bridle, rock solid in his work and requires zero maintenance. He is a fancy Grand Prix horse with a fantastic personality.

This is an in house lease at Highpoint Equestrian. Please contact me for more details!

**We have owned him since he was 4 years old and consider him part of the family so will be looking for the perfect match.

"Thunderbird Dressage" July 26-30

05/24/2023

I read an article this morning about contact and winning.

Short reins, always. Drive the horse to contact. Keep the horse on the aids. Keep the horse round. Keep the horse on the bit.

While I was learning from Manolo he said, "Contact is a gift the horse gives to you, not something that you take." Jillian said, "Collection is not compression."

The article talked about winning blue ribbons but I don't care about ribbons.

To me, winning is...

- Training sessions that revolve around what the horse needs and not what the human wants.

- Developing a horse that is happy in mind and body.

- Shaping what you are offered instead of forcing that which isn't available.

- Repetition without repetition (this comes from Nikolai Bernstein). Variability in posture, gait, and exercises. No drilling, don't stay anywhere too long.

- Utilization of bodywork and movement as therapy. Manolo says movement should be like a massage. Improving comfort and function.

What good is a training session if your horse is not leaving you feeling better than when you found them? You have won nothing if you have not done this.

The more I look back on my week with Manolo, the deeper the appreciation I have for his work and for what he does for the horse.

I have much to learn but I have no doubt that this is the path I wish to be on.

It is with excitement that we can announce that Carl Hester will be hosting his forthcoming 2023 masterclass at Thunderbird Show Park, on Sunday October 8th 2023.

As Carls' currently advertised masterclass on October 1st clashes with Regional Championships, Carl and his team have kindly accepted our invitation to conduct a masterclass on Sunday 8th October instead, allowing the whole community to enjoy the wisdom and humour of this world class rider.

Current ticket holders; please note that your tickets for the previously advertised event on October 1st, will carry over to the new date of October 8th 2023.

Carl's team at Equestrian Management Agency will be in touch with existing ticket holders this week, and we thank them immensely for supporting this decision and being a pleasure to deal with throughout.

Tickets for this event are selling exceptionally fast, so don't delay: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/equestrianmanagementagency/887433
