My old horse, 28, that I’ve had longer than any horse I’ve had for 22 years, has survived a strangulating lypoma, has had cushings and been hard to manage with it for 15 years, and now, finally, chronically laminitic. He has no radiographic changes but has hoof wall separation and needs oral pain meds twice a day.
The ideal management for a horse like him - we all know - is dry lot, feed low sugar OR if he gets to go out grazing muzzle. When he was younger I managed him such. But this year, when I turned him out for his 2 hours with grazing muzzle with his friends he pinned his ears and walked away from the herd. After 2 days if this I thought what the hell am I doing? He’s an old horse, with some level of chronic pain despite my best efforts, and his greatest joy is just being a horse with the young ones. So now, he comes in at night when the sugars are lowest but when the bugs are the worst, he’s had terrible sweet itch for years, and he goes out during the day with the kids - no muzzle. He’s happy…. When he’s no longer happy I will let him go to cross the bridge but I’ll at least know he lived a happy life as he described it to me. Sometimes it’s a balance between ideal medical care and ideal horsemanship. They can’t live forever but we can make their time with us as good as it can be for them if we try.
Kjanu - you are the best old horse ever.

Yes - I breed horses. Norwegian fjord horses now and warm bloods in prior years. But I advocate here not for horse breeders but for dog breeders.
PLEASE - help breeds survive and support a breeder.
Re Dogs - Like it or not there are no cross bred or mutt registries. Yes, you can find great individuals but the breeder of a pure bred has a good idea of what the offspring will be like.
And … no…. Poodles are NOT hypoallergenic they are as hypoallergenic as ANY haired dog that does NOT shed! Sooooo a poodle-mutt is equally not hypoallergenic.
You do NOT always get what you pay for. I hear wild stories of the cost of mutt puppies but do you know who charges less per puppies but has way more financial investment in puppies? A purebred dog breeder! Vet checks: hips, elbows, eyes and more not to mention showing the dog to make sure it holds up to a standard and of course showing the dog in performance sports too.
Enough of the Poo-crap. It’s NOT a poodle, it’s NOT a breed!
Education is power - save a breed save a breeder.

Footnote’s Maximus 2018 gelding Lisa x Mogly 13.3 hh ONLY to approved home that I know or a that a good friend knows. Will not go to 3day or dressage home. Footnote horses - especially this one - will only go where there is a fun life of variety to be had.
Max rides, drives 2 and 4 wheel vehicles and has been driven as a pair, he is trail vehicle and obstacle proof, jumped just a little.
Intention was to show driving (CDEs) but there are no driving shows anywhere within 10 hours and I can’t justify waiting for opportunities….
This one breaks my heart to consider selling so Please NO comments - PM only!!!
NO tire kickers and the $25k CAD is not negotiable. If you know a Footnote horse - you know a great horse.
Videos and Photos available of course.
Sound and great conformation but PPE welcome.

Time to replace lower arena wall boards. Over time the can rot - yes - even pressure treated wood can rot - and of course rodents love to make underground tunnels neither make for a safe “rail” for the horses. So the footing has to be dug out along the rail, the base pulled back, boards replaced, base re compacted, footing replaced. Lastly, it’s time to relevel the footing and we are back up and playing in our indoor sandbox.

Candy Crush imported Polish Pony (yes! That’s a registry!) staying home from Tbird this week but finally some sun our perfect to do some cross training - after all even as a fancy Hunter pony he’ll have a kid of his own one day who wants to play! (And… Kylie only has to use her reins to keep the starved beast from grass - another key pony training skill!)

If you spend a lifetime with horses... you will SEE some things that amaze you.
I have bred horses, foaled out horses, seen horses die... I have a mare, Lisa, the unicorn for those that know her shes's pretty special. She has one surviving foal that she delivered, Max, he lives on the farm. She tolerates him as any middle aged mom would of a son who never moved out of the basement. She had another live foal who sadly died of a rare defect at 6 weeks old... she keened for that foal and it broke my heart. Since she has had 2 foals by embryo transfer. Footnote's La-Di-Da (aka Lady) is just like her and is here on the farm. Lady is a year old and has never been with her biological mother as she was raised by a surrogate and when weaned lived with the other youngsters and my senior.
Now, anyone who knows Lisa KNOWS that she suffers no fools and reigns like the queen she is.
Today, I put Lady and Lisa in turn out together. I filmed it on my iphone and I have NEVER in all my days of turning out new field mates have I seen an interaction like I did today. It was like they had always been together. Like they knew eachother... sent chills... honoured to witness... and sure makes you wonder... about alot of things.... Enjoy. My heart is full.

Meet Fiona.
She’s crash landed here for some TLC.
Shes was a therapy horse locally for years and a good owner behind her.
Was with a lovely family locally but she couldn’t stay there.
*There are no bad choices*
*I will NEVER shame or blame a decision to euthanize*
However, this old gal lady had a kind eye and we’ve got a little room. It’s the wrong direction from downsizing but we’ve had a few like her before some we were a halfway house and others the final stop plus my kids and hubby are all in.
Here is a list of Footnote’s care cases:
Mixed ponies
- Peaches - from OR, went to be a companion and little girl’s pet, passed last winter
- Sophie - Nelson SPCA seizure, homed with Peaches and still going strong
- Peanut - Sophie’s c**t now living in Van wreaking mini cross havoc
And the fjords…
- Taika - from Alaska now happy in WA
- Delta Dawn (aka Deedee) - from Kootenays now trail ridden in the interior)
- Old Ben - from the interior passed here after about a year
- Frankie - from a dude string, to us, back to a trail place, to a lovely last stop with a sweet young lady - the horse tragically passed a bit too young this past spring
- Hedgie - from the interior, went to be a buddy to a retired WB who’s friend had passed, he passed himself a year ago
…. Now Fiona - what will be her last chapter?
