Houston did a big agilities thing this weekend! I honestly never thought we would get there. Between Standards being soooo hard for Houston (still), Covid shutdown, and chasing all his mysterious unicorns (vets have basically said go play and have fun, they’re amazed he’s still around period let alone playing agilities. Houston achieved his Lifetime Achievement Award this weekend! I’m not sure it’s actuality sunk in yet for me. Good boy Houston and thank you Christine for a beautiful Standard course on Friday.

Closing in fast on 7 weeks post op. Not where I’d hope he’d be at this point. Seeing the surgeon next week to determine our next steps. He’d been sleeping for a couple hours just before I filmed this.

5 weeks post op. Austin is enjoying his massage with Jolena at Jems Animal Massage Services. Hard to believe he used to put up quite the fight. He now settles in quite nicely. Still have some significant concerns regarding his post surgery recovery. He’s doing surprisingly well with the no exercise thing but it takes very little to make him gimpy still. Booked a follow up with his surgeon but not until the middle of August. Tech said it’s not unusual after this kind of surgery to have ups and downs but still concerned.

Week 3 post surgery. I’d like to think he’s getting the hang of this no activities thing but I know he’s not. Overall, he’s doing better than expected (CBD is probably helping with that). He comes to work with me 4 days a week and spends the day secured in the office. Houston usually tries to stir up trouble with him in the evenings. We have definitely had a few oops moments. The last two days he has seemed really sore on the left, always after sleeping for a bit and seems to improve with movement. I’m trying not to panic as he’s supposed to be resting and recovering for another 5 weeks. Hoping the settling behaviour continues and the limping decreases.

Update: 2 weeks tomorrow since his arthroscopic elbow surgery. He’s been relatively good so far but has still done more than he should. Stitches came out today and a quick vet check to make sure everything looks good. Still very early in recovery but so far everything looks pretty good. He seems to be getting a little frustrated with the inactivity. Going to be a very long 6 more weeks.

Austin has joined his brothers in the broken stumpy category. We’ve known for a while that something was going on but couldn’t get an answer as to what. A trip to Canada West for a bunch of tests and a chat with the surgeon figured it out so one week ago he went for surgery. Unfortunately, his age and size doesn’t make him the best candidate (not the worst either) for the surgery but we felt it was worth a try. He has multiple fragments in both elbows but far worse in the left. Fragments have now been removed and we start the long recovery process trying to keep the puppymonster from running, jumping and playing. Sounds simple enough…

This sweet little girl is looking for her forever home. Born in December 2022, she is a PB CKC registered German Shepherd. Her current owners are having health issues and finding her puppy antics too much to handle. She is UTD on shots, crate trained, almost fully housetrained, and working on her manners. She would do best with a fenced yard. DM me for more information.

Austin did a thing this weekend. He had an amazing agility weekend and ran hard all weekend. The big one being Friday night when he got his first Masters Gamble Q in 9months! This gave him his Masters Gamble dog of Canada and Agility Trial Champion of Canada titles. Good boy Puppymonster!

Houston❤️. Waiting on the last round of tests to clear him for surgery next week.

Thank you Q-Ball agility for letting us play agilities this weekend. Houston loved playing agilities again and totally rocked the Steeplechase runs. Love my red devil!

Someone was very happy to be back at practice. This was his last run of the night and he was definitely slowing down a little (a little out of shape after 4 months off) but super happy to be back

Active rest. Such an important ingredient to having a well mannered dog. People usually stop and comment about my dogs asking if I’ve run them for a few hours already and that’s why they’re calm. The answer is always no. My boys have learned how to be calm. Yes, they are wild and crazy at times but that’s usually because I am reinforcing it by playing or training them. Despite having highly active cattle dogs I don’t walk/run them everyday. They are still good dogs. They have learned that calmness is king and are quite content to relax around the house but can still be well mannered if we need to go out in public. Calmness is a learned skill, they don’t necessarily grow out of the puppy craziness. My 10 year old is probably the most energetic of my three and we still work on calm with him. He is also generally well mannered when I take him out into the world. If I ask him for the crazy energy (agility, dock diving, nosework) he can certainly flick the switch. Really it’s the best of both worlds and what every dog should learn.
