Last month, we posted about the importance of dental care for our pets. We thought we would help make it a little easier for you to help manage your pet's dental hygiene, so we have put together dental care 'goodie bags' for your dogs and cats. 😸

They contain a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental wipes, as well as a few pamphlets and helpful write-ups on topics such as how to get your pet used to toothbrushing, the importance of dental care, what happens during a dental cleaning procedure, and information on recommended dental food and dental treats. 🪥

You can receive a dental care 'goodie bag' after scheduling and having an oral health examination done with us, so that we can assess the state of your pet's mouth! 🦷

It's that time of year again! The kids are heading back to class, lunches are being prepped, and bags are packed full of supplies for days full of learning! But have you considered that these lunch bags and school backpacks could contain items that may be hazardous to your pets? 🤔

Foods such as grapes, raisins, citrus fruits, onions, nuts, gum, chocolate, candy, salty foods, and foods that have gone bad or become moldy, can all pose various levels of danger to your pets - from mild stomach upset, all the way to serious toxicities and seizures. Ice packs also pose a significant risk if chewed on and contents are ingested. 🍫

School supplies may also be appealing for a pet to try getting a hold of, and some markers, crayons, pencils and glues, for example, can be toxic if consumed. Items such as erasers and toys can also pose a risk of an intestinal blockage! 🖍

Prescription and over the counter medications such as inhalers, ADHD medications, and Tylenol/Advil, are also extremely unsafe for pets and require immediate medical attention if ingested. 💊

Make sure to keep bags containing these items out of reach from your pet - don't underestimate their ability to get into things that they shouldn't! Consider storing backpacks away on high shelves, or in rooms that they cannot access, so that you can ensure they stay safe from these potential hazards. 🐾

Please call if you are concerned that your pet may have eaten something that they shouldn't have! You can reach us at 604-888-4142 📞

For our next staff feature, we will be sharing a little bit about our Registered Veterinary Technologist, Alexa! 🩺

Alexa graduated from the Douglas College Veterinary Technology program in 2023, but has been working in the veterinary world since 2019, and has been loving animals for as long as she can remember. As an assistant, she worked at a bird-only hospital, as well as at an emergency veterinary clinic. As an RVT, she spent a summer working at a marine mammal rescue rehabilitating wild harbor seals, before going back to emergency, and then finally finding her way to us here in Fort Langley! 🐾

Alexa loves animals of all kinds. She has a lovely rescue dog named Fern, a silly sphynx cat named Taro, as well as various pet reptiles. She has a special interest in wildlife, particularly bats, and has volunteered her time working with local bat researchers. 🦇

Outside of work, you can find Alexa enjoying the outdoors with her pup and her partner, dancing and working out, and enjoying new good food. At home, she might be playing board games, video games, enjoying a good show, or indulging in one of many different creative hobbies. 🎸

Our team went out for a fun summer get-together last weekend! (although we may have made a point to hide from the sun...) ☀️

The day started off with a round of underwater mini golf, amongst jellyfish, sharks, and eels. We then worked together to make our way through two back-to-back escape rooms - the first was quickly conquered, and the second was a very close-call... To finish off the day, we all sat down and enjoyed a great meal at a local brewery together.

A big thanks to Dr. Mackenzie for looking out for the team and always supporting us! 🐾

Parasite prevention and control is extremely important for pets, as both external and internal parasites cause discomfort and may lead to disease in your pet. They may also have the potential to affect humans. 😷

Although many parasites are more active in the warmer parts of the year, we do still recommend parasite control year-round, as weather patterns can change, certain parasites can lay dormant through the colder months, and some parasites can still thrive inside of a warm home. 🗓

Don't forget, indoor pets are still at risk of being affected by parasites! Parasites can make their way inside, through you and other people, as well as other pets or pests, and even objects that may enter your house. 🏠

Give us a call at 604-888-4142 or chat with us next time you're in with your pet to discuss our recommended options for monthly parasite prevention and control. 🐾

Chasing your cat around the house to get them into their carrier right before a veterinary appointment is the last thing that any pet parent wants to have to do!
We recommend trying the following tips, to help make your cat's carrier a less stressful place, and maybe even somewhere they'll enjoy!

• Leave the carrier out with the door open, so that your cat can come and go as they please, and get more used to it's presence 🥰
• Place familiar bedding and toys inside of the carrier, helping your cat recognize their own scent and create a more inviting space 🐭
• Consider using a pheromone spray, such as Feliway, to calm and reduce stress for your cat ❤
• Cover the carrier with a blanket or towel, which will make it feel more secure 🐾
• Create positive associations with the crate by rewarding your cat with treats anytime they are near, and eventually enter and spend time in the crate 🐟
• Once they are used to the carrier, you can start to slowly work on closing the door with them inside, lifting and carrying it around, and getting it in the car 🚗

09/08/2025

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are bacteria that occur naturally in freshwater ecosystems. This bacteria does not regularly cause issues, but when they multiply and 'bloom' in warm conditions (typically towards the end of summer/early fall), can become toxic and harm our pets when ingested, which could cause severe issues with the liver and nervous system, and may lead to death if not adresssed quickly. 🦠

The blooms may recongized through unusual smelling water, slimy/cloudy water, dead fish in/near the water, or the appearance of a bluish-green, red, white, or brown film floating on the top of the water.
Please note that the blooms are still not always able to be detected by these descriptors, and toxins may still be present after the 'bloom' is no longer visible.
We recommend checking with your local health authority for updates on potential unsafe waters before your next water-seeking outing with your dog. 💦

Watch for following signs in your pet after being in or near a lake, pond, reservoir, river, or stream, or other warm, shallow, slow-moving or stagnant water sources:

- vomiting
- diarrhea or bloody/black stool
- weakness
- lethargy
- shaking/tremors/seizures
- shallow breathing or difficulty breathing
- pale or white gums
- paralysis
- collapse

Seek veterinary care if any of the above signs occur, and please call us at 604-888-4142 if you have any questions or concerns regarding your pet's health. 📞

This is the difference that receiving a veterinary dental cleaning under anesthesia could make to your pet's teeth. 👨‍⚕️

While under anesthesia for a dental procedure, your pet will receive a full and comprehensive oral examination, full mouth dental x-rays to check for any issues that may not be visible to the naked eye, a thorough tooth scaling both above and below the gumline, and polishing of the teeth, as well as any necessary extractions. 🦷

Dental disease can lead to bad breath, pain, and illness in pets if not treated, which can even affect the heart, kidneys, and liver. 🤒

Chat with us about your pet's dental health the next time you're in, and we can make recommendations for care, such as regular examinations, brushing your pet's teeth at home, dental food and treats, and scheduling a dental cleaning if needed. 🐾
