Wow!!

Today I had the opportunity to shave the massive bear we are currently processing through the shop, and I truly feel this may be the biggest bear that has come through Black Powder Tannery in the two years I’ve been here. ☺️

There is something soul powerful about witnessing what comes and goes through the tannery. Each animal arrives with its own presence, its own story, and its own medicine. Every hide teaches us something different, and every step of the process asks us to move with care, patience, respect, and gratitude.

To be part of this work is a privilege. It is more than tanning. It is preservation. It is honouring. It is learning how to bring new life, purpose, and beauty back into what has been harvested.

May this bear be honoured through every stage of the process.

Honor the Animal. Respect the Harvest. Carry the Medicine.

It was a true honour to work with these beautiful purebred Icelandic sheep hides, along with crosses of Katahdin, Suffolk, and Icelandic. Each one carried its own unique beauty, and it was deeply meaningful to help bring them back to life in such a respectful way.

Here at Black Powder Tannery, we hold great honour and care in the work we do. Every hide is treated with respect for the animal it came from, and with deep appreciation for the natural beauty and purpose it still carries. To us, this work is more than a process — it is a way of preserving life, story, and value through skilled hands and intentional craftsmanship.

These hides turned out beautifully, and it is always rewarding to see them restored in a way that reflects their former life with dignity.
