❗️Trace mineral deficiencies are common in cow-calf herds without proper mineral supplementation.

👇Check out the post below from Beef Cattle Research Council for more information on trace mineral requirements in beef cattle.

Monitoring the trace mineral status of your beef cattle herd during fall preg-checks is a good idea. Testing at this point should allow ample time to adjust supplementation to correct any identified deficiencies prior to calving.

Work with your veterinarian and nutritionist to ensure the trace mineral requirements of your herd are being met.

💧The quality of your water source is always fluctuating, regular testing is recommended to monitor potential water quality issues

🔎Water testing provides information on your water's pH, hardness, total dissolved solids as well as potential antagonists, such as sulfates.

❗️Blair's is partnered with a testing lab; just bring a sample of your water into your local Blair's and we'll handle the rest!

📌Stored hay bales will have varying levels of quality loss due to precipitation, the storage site and the original condition of the bale

📌Large hard-core bales are best as they shed water better than smaller soft-core bales

📌Ideally bales would be covered and on a firm base of coarse rock, but covered storage is often not realistic

📌The best uncovered storage method is for bales to be end-to-end in single rows with space between bales for good air circulation and drying

📌Other methods include the mushroom stack or pyramid stack but shedding of water from top bales onto bottom bales can cause larger losses in lower bales

📌It's important to consider potential feed loss when deciding how to store feed on your operation

Check out this extended grazing checklist from Beef Cattle Research Council

Consider extended grazing systems to reduce labour, reduce feed delivery costs and reduce manure handling

Extending the grazing season through stockpiled forage, crop residue, bale grazing or swath grazing can reduce labour, transport and delivery of feed and manure handling.

Producers looking at extended grazing options must remember to:
✅️provide adequate stock water (or clean, fluffy snow)
✅️appropriate shelter from cold temperatures
✅️consider fencing options
✅️include feed testing of standing forages or crops to ensure nutrient needs are met
✅️have a back-up plan in case things go differently than expected

Follow these simple tips when taking feed samples!

📝Probe 10% of your bales and select representative bales for the most accurate test results

📝Probe round bales from the side of the bale, NOT from the end

📝Thoroughly combine the samples from 10% of your bales to fill a large Ziploc bag

📬Bring your sample into your local Blair's office to send for testing!

🚨Contact your local Blair's retail for more information on feed sampling and test results!

🌿Silage is becoming a more common way to preserve feed in Western Canada, but chopping and packing must be done right to ensure optimum quality

💧Moisture of the chopped forage should be between 60% and 65%

🚜Each packing layer should be no more than six inches deep; it is not possible to overpack silage

✂️Proper chop length is 1/4 - 1/2 inch for corn and 3/8 - 1/2 inch for cereals, grass, and alfalfa

🚨Silage inoculant is available through your local Blairs, give us a call to place an order!
