Our Pyramid stables 2024 summer camps are now over for the season. This year we hosted six summer camps where just over 60 young people learned how to ride and care for horses.
They learned not only basic riding skills, but responsibility and teamwork. Along with some stable management and crafts and just a whole bunch of fun
Looking forward to next season❤️🐴

We had no ragwort Tanzi w**d on our property until two years ago. Now it is in the grazing field and underneath all the fences. We have been very busy trying to keep it away. It’s crazy how fast it spreads. If you see this w**d on your horse property try your best to pull it and dispose of it.

STUD HOLES ⚫️

Whilst type of studs and placement can be down to personal preference and individual horse needs here are some general rules -

✅ Always plug your stud holes to prevent stones and mud packing up in them, this will also protect the stud hole threads
✅ Plan ahead - if you need stud holes pre-warn your farrier BEFORE they arrive for your shoeing appointment
✅ Always use the smallest studs you can get away with
✅ Allow for the foot to slide a little - you don't want to bring the hoof to a sudden stop as this prevents the natural shock absorbing system of the foot and limb from working properly
✅ When using double stud holes - use studs the same height in order to keep the feet balanced
✅ Studs on the inside of the foot should be rounded to minimise a striking injury to the opposing limb
✅ Traditionally you use a bigger pair of studs in the hinds as this is where most of the power comes from
✅ Use studs with caution on hard ground to avoid jarring the joints and bones
✅ There are different shape studs for different types of surfaces and ground conditions - if unsure which to use, ask your farrier for advice
✅ Choosing what stud height - a general rule is how deep you think the foot will sink above the shoe - so if you have a mud line 1cm above the shoe, use a 1cm tall stud

Borrowed a friend arena float today. A T3 rascal.
Just checking it out to see how it works on compacted sand. This T3 float has four adjusting parts and each part has multiple options for adjustments. When I finally got it set right it did a fantastic job of loosening the sand in the indoor arena. These floats are a bit pricey so wanted to try one out first.
We are planning on resurfacing the indoor riding arena soon. We think we finally found the right sand that will work for us.

Spent some time today on w**d control around the farm. Yes w**d control is very important on a farm. If left, they can get out of control and take over. Using the little Kabota tractor and brush cutter, we trimmed all the w**ds and tall grass the horses won’t eat out of our grazing field. This big buck and beautiful Raven stopped in for a visit.
They’re calling for rain this week so the grass should grow back nicely. Looks great when finished.

A bit of a late post.
Welcome to the second show of our Pyramid Stables Winter Series. Today is Hunter day!
It has been a busy morning with everyone, grooming and tacking their horses preparing for the show. Ho Jo’s food truck is on site to the delight of their favourite customers, Ranger and Zen dog. Spending a lovely Sunday afternoon fixing a couple of soft spots in the outdoor riding ring. Digging out., adding new base and covering it back over with sand in anticipation of an early spring, the outdoor will start getting a lot of use soon. Next the plan is to redo the base of the indoor ring and add a new riding surface. 🐴🐴

Snow day on the farm. This morning we woke up to approximately 8 inches of snow here on the farm. At first it seems very peaceful and pretty until the reality of looking after 35 horses changes the mood.
And then two small cars pulled in the driveway as our staff arrives for the day. Did I tell you how amazing they are.
Jump on the tractor to plough pathways and driveways so no one has to push 100 pound wheelbarrels through the snow.
It stopped snowing around mid morning and it turned out to be a fairly nice day.
Horses seem to really enjoy the snow. A lot of running around bucking and kicking up their heels. And of course Ranger loves the snow❄️☃️❤️🐴🐶

Happy New Year
As the days are shorter and we have time to slow down and reflect on the year ahead and think what we are grateful for. And here at pyramid stables we would like to acknowledge how grateful we are for all our Amazing BARN STAFF. Working at the barn is not an easy job. There are long hot days in the summer. And winter cold, snow and heavy wheelbarrels to push. and through all this they still show up every day and do the job.
Our stable could not function without the hard work and knowledge of our staff. We appreciate you beyond words. So a big thank you to all the staff for taking great care of our barn our horses and our clients.
And of course our dog Ranger is also on staff. Public relations, welcoming committee and ministry of security. Good thing he works for cookies.
Happy new year from all of us at pyramid stables

It's the night before Christmas, we're out in the barn,
Blanketing horses to keep them all warm,
They're eating their dinners, tucked in cozy stalls,
Not aware that it's Christmas, or any special day at all.

They can dream of spring pastures from their pine-scented beds,
No visions of sugarplums dance in their heads,
But we people are thinking of merry parties and such,
Maybe feeling a little sad at missing so much.

This season is special but the horses don't know,
We've got work to do before we can go,
We finish the chores and head on inside,
To get ready for dinner and our own yuletide.

It's nearly midnight, the carols are sung,
I remember a story I was told when I was young,
How at midnight on Christmas Eve,
The creatures of the barnyard can speak to us with ease.

I am called to the barn, I wade through the rain,
I know I must go, I can't really explain,
I slide open the door, pause for a while,
Then slowly walk down the dimly lit aisle.

A nicker from LL , a wink from Kudos,
Sleepy old Buddy waking to see,
Addy rustling his bedding, a snort soft and light,
Each horse gave a greeting as I walked through the night.

I thought about parties bright lit and warm,
The ones we don't go to 'cause we have the barn,
And vacations and holidays that we don't get,
When we're working long hours for bills to be met.

Walking all the way to the end of the aisle,
I stop to stroke Pepper, it brings me a smile,
He snuffles my face, hot breath on my skin,
It starts me to thinking about my horses, my kin.

I could be at parties with laughter and mirth,
But where I am right now is the best place on Earth.
