We have been quiet on here lately as the last couple weeks have been pretty rough. Most of the time you only ever see the good that comes with farming and not the bad, however this is the side that no one wants or likes to deal with.
A few weeks ago the whole herd got sick (some worse than others) out of the blue. We talked with our vet and made the decision to treat them with a long lasting penicillin in hopes to kill whatever was going around. After about 2wks most of the herd seemed to be doing better, until a few more does went back downhill. We treated them a second time, and thought we got them back out of the woods again. Unfortunately we come outside to do morning chores a week later to find one of our yearlings was having a miscarriage at about 2 months pregnant. This really took a toll on her and she went a few days of feeling ill before going back to her regular self. We thought it was finally over however we were unfortunately wrong and during the second bout of -30 weather we had another doe miscarry at about 2.5 months pregnant, this took a huge toll on her and she just started feeling herself again about a week ago.
And just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse it did. My all time favourite doe who is now 8yrs old this year, was miscarrying 30 days out from her due date. Thankfully she passed her kids and placenta easily, and bounced back really quickly. She came into milk, and we made the decision to keep her in milk, and she is now doing wonderful! After 3 does miscarrying we decided to send these kids and the placenta in to get to the bottom of this to make sure it didn’t happen again. After about two weeks of waiting we got the news that it seemed to be caused by a bad bag of feed. This is incredibly frustrating, and a reminder to always triple check your feed before giving it to your goats, and to throw any away that seems to possibly be bad, even if your not 100% sure, it’s better to be safe than sorry as this can happen to anyone!
We are now just days away from our first due dates and we are hoping the rest of this season goes smoothly as it’s, been a rough start!
Pictured is Wonderland GJ Ferrero Fiesta *M who is still 2wks out from her due date and is as wide as she is tall! 😬
