In 1998 over brunch my Dad casually asked ‘what are you doing after maternity leave?’. That question started what is now Second Home Pet Resort.
When I was growing up, my Dad was with the City of St. Albert Fire Department. He always had a side hustle going; trailer rentals, lawn care, Christmas trees, firewood… but as an animal lover, he always said that the kennel business was something that interested him.
So that’s what brought us to that question that would change our lives in 1998.
It took two years to find our first location - many of you may remember it - on Ellerslie road. Our eldest daughter Ashlynn was just 4, and Alissa was just 2. My Mum and Dad sold their St. Albert home, Kory and I sold our townhome, and we started our journey to where we are today. My Mum retired from her job and we opened our doors on February 1st 2000.
My Dad was the driving force to open Second Home (formerly Ellerslie Road Kennels). He worked tirelessly cleaning and painting our first location, installed new roofing, fencing, you name it, all while renovating the two homes for our families to live in.
When we moved to our current location in 2006 he painstakingly drew up the plans with pencil and graph paper exactly how I wanted them. He spent long days prepping for concrete, installing in floor heat lines, and building the walls. His hands and heart touched every part of what we have built here. He took such pride in our facility, and our property, and our family. He worked quietly behind the scenes ensuring no job was neglected.
He was a self proclaimed ‘jack of all trades, master of none’. He shared his knowledge with Kory, passing on countless tips and tricks.
He could often be seen cutting the grass or clearing the snow. He was my sounding board for difficult situations or new ideas. His advice was almost always right, even if I didn’t like it at the time.
For some of you who saw him on our back roads, he was the man who walked the dog. He would walk over 20 km some days with his best pal Diego.
Over the years of this adventure my Dad never wavered in his belief in this business. He believed in me and what we could build if we shared our vision, our ideas, and a love for one another. Today our children are an integral part of his legacy, with Emma, Alissa and Q taking on management roles.
Sadly on Jan 23, 2025 my Dad was diagnosed with brain cancer. A devastating blow to our family. After a mercifully short illness, he passed away on Feb 22, 2025.
I will always thank my Dad for asking that question all those years ago.
We will continue to work hard to ensure that what he helped create here, our dream that he brought to life, is cared for with all of the same love that he poured into it.
