The abandoning of pets has significant consequences for the animals and the community. Pet owners must understand the responsibility that comes with owning a pet and consider the long-term commitment they are making.

For the animals, abandonment can lead to a life of suffering and hardship. They are left to fend for themselves, facing hunger, thirst, and exposure to the elements. They may also experience injuries and diseases without access to proper veterinary care. This can result in a shortened lifespan and a great deal of physical and emotional distress.

The community suffers from the consequences of pet abandonment and the impact on the animals. Stray animals can pose a safety risk to themselves and others by causing road accidents or becoming aggressive due to fear and insecurity. This can create a nuisance for the community and put individuals at risk of harm.

All current City of Lethbridge dog licenses now expire on December 31, and need to be renewed for 2022.

As per the Dog Control Bylaw 5235, all resident dogs six months of age and older require yearly registration with the city. Active registration tags provide proof of ownership and allow the animal services team to quickly reunite hundreds of lost pets back to their families every year. Yearly license fees support animal shelter operations which include providing care for found strays, spay or neuter of adoptable pets, as well as education and outreach programs. Any person found in care or control of an unlicensed dog is subject to fines.

There are several options available to renew for 2022.

We have had an enormously generous amount of donations to our Community Pet Food Bank program over the last few weeks.

Thank you so much!!

This program is in place to assist pet owners who need temporary support with supplies like food and litter, in the hope they can avoid having to surrender or rehome a pet while they navigate difficult times. This program is only possible because of donations made by the public.

Those needing to access the Community Pet Food Bank are asked to call our office at 403-320-4099.

Recently we have been informed about some disrespectful behavior at the new Peenaquim Park Disc Golf Course.

Park users have found dogs being run off-leash beyond the designated area, and into the disc golf course, as well as bags of dog f***s being left in the disc baskets.

Leaving dog f***s in bags around the park spaces is not in compliance with the bylaws. Dog f***s must be picked up, and deposited in an appropriate waste bin. Failure to do so is a violation and subject to fines.

Peenaquim Park is intended to be a multi-use park, which means its a shared space to be enjoyed by all members of the community. Please be respectful and responsible when using this area by being mindful of the off-leash boundaries and cleaning up dog waste.
