The Tails of Hydra

The Tails of Hydra Dedicated to the OG doggo, The Trucking Titan, over the Rainbow Bridge Oct 5 2023 I sustained a head injury while at work and it was a life changing experience.

Titan was a recue from Casper Humane Society- He started out as a scared little pupper than slowly came out of his shell and was loved by hundreds of people as I shared his story, and the daily story of our lives over the road as long haul truckers. We strove to educate the public, and just share the quirks of daily trucking life with everyone. Eventually we retired from trucking, got other jobs a

nd started moving away from the page, and posting as regular, much to the chagrin of our fans- but it felt like we just didn't have a whole lot to share that was interesting. As time went by Titan got older, and older, and at the age of 17 he had a medical emergency and ultimately crossed the Rainbow Bridge, where I'm sure he is happy with a pain free body, and endless romps in the sun.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are continuing our journey with a new pup, Hydra who is in training to be a service dog for myself. While Hydra was originally intended to be just a pet, he showed a real aptitude for intelligence and calm and I decided that he would be happier with a job- and he has skills that can make us a great team and help me live a more normal life. So now we are sharing that journey with our fans.

Practice day, it was warm-ish but the wind was very chilly- Hydra got to visit some of the team and chill out (ha ha) in the park before we went to visit with Grandma!

We went to a few stores and he did absolutely fantastic, walked with us at Grandma speed (which is a bit slower than what we normally do) and looked at all the stuff in the store. We were there over an hour and he performed amazingly. Most notably when we were in an aisle with some other people he tucked in behind me next to the racking out of the way while the people shopped in front of us and went by. He also maintained his loose leash walk perfectly, did many check ins and tasked. He amazed me, which he shouldn't I mean we have spent a lot of time and money training. He definitely was a big help to me.

We also ran into 2 dogs- not service dogs- one was very very reactive and was barking and nearly out of control and the owners struggled to hold their dog back, just from seeing us walk by from over 10 feet away. Hydra looked, but kept on walking like a fantastic doggo, but wow. Second dog was a pug, and that dog sniffed Hydra and I moved away, repeatedly, while the lady with the dog kept moving towards us. I moved us behind a clothing rack and the woman said 'it's okay mine is friendly!' and looked mystified as to why I would stay away.

Guys, no matter where you are, your dog might be friendly but you don't know if the other person's dog is or not (their dog could be unexpectedly violent) , you don't know if they are in training like Hydra, you don't know their story- respect a strangers wishes and keep your distance unless they ask otherwise.

Pictures from and after intermediate class!!! Someone was so pumped to be in class he was a bonkers puppy for 10-15 minutes before he collected his braincells and started to think again- He was so excited he was making excited dog noises and was acting like he had never been trained in his life. He even got the zoomies. After he got it together he was fantastic though, and showed the other dogs what he could do - the pups in this class are all youngin's compared to Hydra, and they're already pretty good, I think they'll all do great in this class.

(there's a video of his after class zoomies if you look on our page)

Took Hydra for a walk was supposed to be a hike but he said it was too windy and he didn't like it and can we go home mom pleeeeeaseeee? He was pretty warm under all those layers but he still didn't like it - probably because I covered his ears up to prevent frostbite- because those ears are huge lol. It wasn't really that cold, but the windchill was gross. All in all, we had a 15 minute hike LMAO

Grueling service dog training day. We had to sit still (gasp) and just watch children and be all chill and not play with them or run and have fun. The absolute hardest thing ever!!! Little dude was a bit antsy, and did want to play, and then he was bored... so so bored and wanted to leave lol. We need to do this more often. He had a little girl come pet him and talk our ears off. We were with a large group of dogs all training, another thing we need to do more often. All in all it was a good day and little man slept all the way home.

I had to get a outpatient surgery done and afterwards little man and I napped in the car. Doggo therapy is the best.

Really important points- socialization is not playing with all the dogs, people and kids.

Really important points- socialization is not playing with all the dogs, people and kids.

This really is our "fault" as a society.❗
We seem to promote play instead of acclimation.
Socialisation is a very warped term.
"Socialisation" really isn't play, play is a separate and important skill BUT if your dog or puppy is actively encouraged to play with every other dog or puppy they encounter...that in itself can be the beginning of a lifetime of reactivity.
I have been criticised for promoting "too much" calmness around other dogs and puppies...."Why can't they show emotions", "Why can't they play"?
Never said they couldn't....however, because of the societal pressure to play with all other dogs and puppies (wherever we take them) we can VERY easily set our dogs up to view all dogs and puppies as a source of constant amusement at the mere glimpse of one, a reason to go to the very extremes of emotions.
They may "dig in" and drag you closer.
The barking, shrieking and spinning can start....for two reasons, the emotional extremes dogs now have attached to other dogs and the frustration because they can't reach that other dog quick enough.

So maybe the term "socialisation" is the issue, because for us it means "socialising".
Acclimation is a far better term.

We went for a wander for an hour to wear out doggo's angst- it turns out the area we were walking in was a 3/4 frozen swamp so it was like being on a stair stepper for me, the ground squashing down oddly (but no wet) and then having to high step to keep going... doggo is light enough he just skipped across like it was nothing lol. He had a good time sniffing, I got my heart rate up (maybe a bit too high a couple times) and all in all it was good fun.

Service dog training!!! It was a highly distracting day- above the training facility there is a place where a band was practicing- the drums were insanely loud and initially Hydra was very intimidated. It was loud for even us. After a bit of playing and treats he settled down more and was able to start actual training. We worked on the basics of starting to train retreive -which I've had no problem training to other past doggo's but Hydra is more of a keep away kind of guy so it's a bit harder to train the retrieve plus we are going to train him to retrieve things that he would normally not put his mouth on (like a key ring or cell phone)
