A beautiful soul crossed the Rainbow Bridge on November 1st, All Saints Day, so fitting for this lovely girl. Sweet Gucci, a 20-year-old JRT, received regular chiropractic care in her senior years to keep her moving and feeling her best. Her spirit, quirks, and joyful prance into my treatment room will be dearly missed.

Gucci, was more than just a dog; she was the heart and inspiration behind Nancy, her owners, devotion to TEAM Dog Rescue, fuelling her passion to help dogs as deserving as Gucci find owners who cherish them as deeply.

Rest easy, sweet girl. You’ll be remembered always. Xoxo My deepest condolence to Nancy, an exceptional pet mom who gave her so much love and care. 🙏💞🐾

🚨🐾 Heroic Dog Saves the Day! 🐾🚨

Meet Mossie, an incredible 6.5-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer and cherished FullStride chiropractic patient. 🐕✨

From the day Mossie was brought home from Emily and Rob MacKinnon's Stannyfield Kennel, she’s been a nose-to-the-ground kind of gal. With a nose for adventure and a heart of gold, Mossie soon joined scent training classes with Kim Mitchell and the Peterborough County Noz-It Club and Scent Training and tracking classes from Susan Read through the Ontario Canine Wellness Centre.

Fenelon Falls was buzzing with worry this past Labour Day morning: An elderly neighbour had gone missing. 😟🌅 Knowing Mossie’s skills, Kathy, her owner asked if they could join the search in an area where the neighbour used to gather clover for rabbits. With permission granted, they set off with Mossie in her harness, following her keen instincts.

Mossie led through the grass as the cool sunrise bathed the landscape. Suddenly, she stopped and turned towards the tall grass. Kathy called out their neighbour’s name, and Mossie darted into the grass. To everyones relief, Mossie found him 20 feet in, injured but conscious. Mossie gave him a reassuring kiss, and 911 was called. 🚓🚑

The OPP arrived swiftly, and the neighbour was taken to the hospital. Thankfully, he was checked out and released later that day! 🎉💪

Labour Day 2024 turned out to be quite the day, with Mossie earning her stripes and treats from the OPP Dog team. 🍪🐾

The neighbour and his wife were so grateful they brought us a beautiful mum pot as a thank you. 🌸💖

Sometimes, heroes come with wagging tails. Thank you, Mossie, for saving the day! 🏅❤️

Here’s a timely blog post that’s definitely worth sharing! It’s particularly relevant for veterinarians, pet owners, and non-veterinary healthcare professionals who are qualified and regulated to work with animals within their scope of practice and are advocating for regulatory changes with the College of Veterinarians of Ontario. Speaking from experience, it’s been a challenging journey with many complex issues. However, by collaborating, pet owners, allied animal health practitioners, and licensed professionals in related fields can help ease the burden on overwhelmed clinics and ensure that every animal receives the care and attention it deserves.
I will attend the Aug 29th Community Gathering virtually. Dr. Kevin Haussler, DVM, DC, PhD, will discuss the issues.

The current global veterinary crisis calls for a paradigm shift towards a more collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to animal care – the health and welfare of animals and their owners need to be the focus of care. By working together, animal owners, licensed professionals in related fields...

A little late, but it’s worth a celebratory post! 🎉🥂

Having been a ‘non-certified’ member of the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) for many years, in 2023, I completed the final step of the certification process offered by the Animal Chiropractic Certification Commission of the AVCA. 🐾🐴🐈
Although this certification is voluntary and distinct from licensure, it requires recertification to maintain the credential, including proof of continuing education—a necessity for today’s animal chiropractic practice.
On top of the extensive post-graduate training animal chiropractors receive, I felt it was essential to pursue this professional achievement and be part of an association that promotes the highest standards of competence and safety in animal chiropractic care through several initiatives, one being animal chiro research—something near and dear to my heart ❤️

So, now it’s official. 🙏🙌

Good info for equine clients regarding pre-purchase exam’s 🐴

PRE PURCHASE EXAMS

Dr. Pope highly encourages all horse buyers to engage a veterinarian for a pre purchase exam prior to committing to a purchase.

A Pre Purchase exam consists of a thorough physical exam, neurological exam and soundness exam to screen for potential health issues that may affect the horses' eligibility for its intended purpose. X-rays of the major joints of the limbs are usually performed to check for abnormalities. The areas most frequently imaged include: The front feet, all 4 fetlocks, the hocks, the stifles, the carpi, the neck and the back. X-rays can tell you if degenerative joint disease, OCD lesions, or mineralization in soft tissues is present. X-rays are often the most expensive part of the process. However, if a major issue such as an orthopedic lesion that requires surgery to correct is detected, this can save the buyer from further expenses that will manifest down the line. It is also common to perform bloodwork to screen for general health issues.

You may have heard that a horse will either PASS or FAIL a Pre Purchase exam. But, this is NOT the purpose of a Pre Purchase Exam. A horse should be assessed and evaluated for suitability related to the intended use of the horse. For example, a horse with mild arthritis may thrive if the intended use is recreational trail riding, but not so much if they are expected to compete in 50 mile Endurance rides. It is important to remember that a Pre Purchase exam is a snapshot in time and Dr. Pope cannot predict the future, but she can certainly shed light on existing issues that may affect the horses' ability to do its job!

One of Dr. Pope's favourite things is to perform thorough and detailed Pre Purchase Exams and assist horse owners with purchasing their next mount!

If you are in the market for your next horse, give us a call to find out more about Pre Purchase Exams! 705 932 0773 or email at [email protected].

Here’s a cool dog I have the pleasure of treating 😎. Yeti, (love the name), is a 5 yr old wire-haired Ibizan Hound. The most common coat type is a smooth coat. This breed is from Spain where they were used to hunt rabbit and small game over rough terrain. They are also able to jump incredible heights from a standstill. Can you say, ‘hunny, we need a taller fence!’. Yeti was imported from Spain and now enjoys playing agility with his owner. Let’s hear it for active, fun dogs like Yeti ❣️🐾

Recently we have had a couple of people getting in touch thinking that what we do is similar to some of the viral animal manipulation videos doing the rounds.

Chiropractic for animals should be joint specific and very quick which lessens the force required to deliver the necessary adjustment (I.e. high velocity, low amplitude). The art of chiropractic is finding the joint(s) restricted and using an adjustment to re-initiate optimal motion thereby improving the neurology and motion.

When your animal attends the clinic or we visit your horse, time is taken to make sure they're happy and content to be examined and treated. Watching adjustments is often relatively dull and minimal.

Videos showing fore limb leg separations and massive jerking movements or extreme animal reactions is not chiropractic.

*The post says: “can” look boring. Chiropractic to me is an art where it’s as specific as possible with as much speed as possible which reduces force as much as possible. You don’t have to agree but I won’t tolerate abusive private messages.
