Be aware of the risk of avian influenza.

Be aware of the risk of avian influenza.

AVMA President Sandra Faeh and other experts recommend keeping cats indoors or in secure "catios," keeping dogs leashed when outdoors and avoiding raw or undercooked pet foods and treats to minimize exposure to avian influenza. For backyard poultry, covering coops and runs can prevent exposure to the virus. Symptoms of avian flu in pets include loss of appetite, fever and tremors, and backyard poultry may die quickly from the disease. Contact a veterinarian immediately if animals show signs of avian flu, and inform the veterinarian before bringing the animal in that avian flu is a possibility, Dr. Faeh says

Cami needs life-saving surgery—and she needs it now.

When 2-year-old Cami first arrived at the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes from a local rescue, she had been treated for a medical condition and seemed to be on the road to recovery. But just a day later, the condition returned.

We rushed her to a local animal hospital, where vets tried everything to help her. Surgery was performed alongside her spay procedure, and for a short time, we thought she was finally safe. But within days, the condition returned. More testing revealed a devastating diagnosis—Cami has intussusception, a life-threatening condition where her intestine folds into itself. Without specialized surgery, her future is grim.

Will you help Cami by donating today at https://give-can.keela.co/spring-2025-emergency-campaign?

Cami is fighting to survive, but she can’t do it alone. Right now, she’s being lovingly fostered by a veterinary staff member, spending her days curled up in her foster dad’s lap, unaware of how serious her condition is. She deserves a future filled with love, not pain.

The urgent surgery and critical medical care Cami needs will cost between $6,000 and $8,000—and we must raise these funds immediately. Without this procedure, her future is uncertain.

Please, don’t wait—Cami needs you now. Your generosity today will give Cami a fighting chance—a chance to heal, to trust, and to find happiness.

On behalf of Cami and all the animals who rely on your kindness—thank you for acting now.

With urgency and gratitude,
Emily Harris, RVT
Executive Director
Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes

While many associate March 17th with St. Patrick's Day, it is also St. Gertrude of Nivelles Day. She is considered the patron saint of travelers, gardeners, widows, recently deceased souls, souls in purgatory, rodents and most importantly...cats!
