~~ Montessori Learning vs. Outrun Training ~~

There are many similarities between Montessori Learning and Outrun Training.

Flexible curriculum: Neither Montessori nor Outrun have a made-to-order curriculum. Students can choose their own activities and tasks, with guidance from the teacher/trainer. They can also mostly work at their own pace.

Decentralized learning: Montessori and Outrun teachers rarely give whole-class lectures. Students usually work independently or in groups, and pursue their individual interests/goals.

Holistic education: Both Montessori and Outrun classes aim to educate the whole student. In addition to core academics, they place lots of emphasis on learning practical skills, developing the right character traits, and learning important values.

Concrete learning: Both the Montessori and Outrun approach emphasize concrete learning. Teams work with lots of hands-on material and learn important practical skills.

Using state of the art training methodology, our trainers attend continuing education (CE) classes every 6-12 months to ensure we can provide you with the best service possible.

Our two youngest training partners have been working hard. Cara, working with Gemini, volunteers time every week to helping train some of the dogs who are looking for homes.

Volunteering at any age can increase your self-confidence, help you learn new skills, connects you with people who have similar interests, and as adults even advance your career. Studies have shown that volunteering can help counteract the negative effects of stress, depression, anxiety, and anger.

Our school age volunteers have opportunity to gain an appreciation for helping others, learn some key foundation skills, and earn community service hours. They learn how volunteering makes a difference, how to work together as a team, and how good it feels to make an impact in your community.

~~ Service Dog Saturdays ~~

Service Dog in Training (SDIT) Colette is proud to let everyone know that she has started her formal public access (PA) training! She has graduated from pet-friendly stores to SD or SDIT only stores.

Service Dogs should be polite, confident, calm, and non-obtrusive in public. They should remain quietly at the side of their handler unless they are required to perform a service task.

In Ontario, there is not a specific requirement for a Public Access TEST, however some Service Dog owners have found that when they travel, they are required to have specific training completed for their dogs which may include proof that a PA test has been completed.

The PA assessment that Outrun provides is a series of 40 exercises and is modeled after the Assistance Dogs International Public Access Test.

Our SDITs complete 120 hours of PA training and must pass each of the 40 exercises to graduate this portion of our program.

Today marks the beginning of Benny's second week of Puppy Start Right Board and Train. Puppy Start Right is the perfect fit for the business professional.

Puppy Start Right is a program based on positive reinforcement dog training. Your puppy boards Mon-Fri here and goes home for weekends. During this time, we work to teach basic manners, obedience skills, crate-training, house-training and socialization.

Our Board and Train dogs attend our Daycare play groups, participate in Group Training Sessions, and receive one on one training sessions.

All of our programs are run by certified, qualified trainers. Our trainers complete continuing education annually to ensure that we are providing you with the best quality of training we can possibly provide.

Training Tuesday

Today's Training tip is for our dog owners! Please do your research when you are purchasing a new puppy.

Do you remember what you need to do when preparing for a new dog?

1. Research the breed that you would like to purchase/adopt. Does this type of dog meet the needs of your family, the energy level, the friendliness/aloofness you're looking for, and the desired size?

2. Research where you will get the dog from. Is this a breeder or a shelter/rescue? Do you know the history of the puppy/dog? How do you determine if it is reputable facility? (We'll cover this in more detail in future posts!)

3. Does the puppy/dog have medical care? Vaccine, deworming, and microchip records? An easy way to check in on the validity of the medical care your potential new pet has is to ask to see if the parents have up to date vaccines.

38 ~~~ That's the number of punctures Gigi has after being attacked by another dog. There are bite wounds all over her body - head, neck, back, and all four of her legs.

Gigi came to us as a result of a negligence investigation into a commercial breeder. Gigi and 30 other dogs lived together producing litter after litter of puppies. As with many commercial breeders, Gigi's puppies were sold through Kijiji with the buyers being told they are "home raised".

Gigi has asked us to pass along a message - PLEASE don't disregard your puppies' parents because sometimes the truth lies behind closed doors.

Gigi is a Labradoodle with a lot of poodle in there! She is 5 years old and is an amazingly sweet, kind, and gentle dog. Despite her traumatic experience, Gigi seems to appreciate other dogs company and loves people. When she arrived, she moved as though she was in a dream - very slowly without looking at anyone directly. We are excited that she is finally starting to heal and engage with the people around her.

Gigi isn't quite ready to move to a new home but she might be ready to consider a foster-to-adopt.

Evaluate Your Lifestyle

Before bringing a dog into your life, evaluate your lifestyle. Consider your family's hobbies, activities, personalities, and health. In an investigation, details matter!

Does a member of your family have an allergy to dogs? Are they allergic to the fur, hair, dander, or saliva? Although there are dogs who have hypo-allergenic hair, that doesn't mean a person wouldn't have a reaction to the saliva or dander. Some people are allergic to different types of hair.

Does your family have a hobby or activities that may monopolize a majority of your time outside of work or school? Is this hobby dog friendly so that you could bring your dog with you? If it is not, do you have a plan for where your dog can go or what he can do while you are engaging in your hobby?

Finally, take some time to consider the personalities of your family members. Just as certain personalities of people can clash, or alternatively get along well, the personalities of dogs-people and dogs-dogs can either clash or compliment one another.

*** When should you start training your puppy? ***

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) states: "In general, puppies can start socialization classes as early as 7-8 weeks of age. Puppies should receive a minimum of one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to the first class and a first de-worming. They should be kept up to date on all vaccines throughout the class."

It used to be that trainers and veterinarians recommended that puppies delay training classes until they were old enough to have all of their vaccines and boosters. This meant that some puppies didn't get to class until they were four to six months of age. By this time, some puppies had already developed behavioral issues.

Waiting too long to begin classes can result in inadequate socialization during the first six months of the puppy's life and may result in behavioral problems including fears, phobias, avoidance, and aggression.

Recognize the Commitment

Before bringing home a dog, make an honest assessment about whether you are ready to take on the commitment of caring for another living creature. Are you ready for the financial, emotional and time commitment that owning a dog requires?

Dogs cost money to get basic veterinary care, buy food and supplies, pay for training, grooming, boarding, daycare, and if you're lucky you won't need any emergency care. Sometimes emergency care can be in the range of thousands of dollars - there are insurance companies who can insure your dog if that is out of your budget.

Dogs can take an emotional toll on you. They can be a wonderful, happy, funny addition to your family and have the potential to bring you great joy. However, dogs can also sometimes be destructive, messy, hairy, and frustrating. Are you ready for this potential emotional rollercoaster?

What should be included in your training class?

There are a lot of advertisements out there for dog training and it can be very difficult to determine the "RIGHT" class to take. Here are some tips and pointers to keep in mind during your search:

1. Consider whether the class will meet your personal training goals for your dog.

2. The instructor should be available to you for consultation to help you determine the appropriate steps to reach your training goals.

3. Socialization comes part and parcel with training, is the instructor prepared to help you manage and teach this aspect?

4. Does the instructor have any formalized training themselves? The dog training industry is currently unregulated in Canada - so make sure you investigate to ensure that the person you have hired is qualified to do the job.

Student Centered Learning

When you attend a dog training class at Outrun, there are two students - the human and the dog. Together you formulate your handling team. Our training coaches work with you to determine the best approach for both members in your team.

In each of our classes, our goal is to help you meet your individualized goals. We group our sessions around a common topic/goal and our trainers move around the class to work with each client one-on-one.

Training teams have the freedom to choose tasks, projects, and goals. Training coaches provide instructions and exercises that will help their students meet their goals.

** A Note on Distractions **

Training your Service Dog (SD) to focus while surrounded by distractions not only takes time and patience but also skill and knowledge. Your SD needs to be able to perform their tasks properly and effectively in many different situations. Work pro-actively with your training team to ensure your SD or SDIT (Service Dog In Training) is prepared so you can be confident wherever you go.

When training our service dogs, we don't go out to the most stimulating environment when they are puppies. Instead, using positive reinforcement and research based training models, we slowly build up their tolerance to stimuli until they are fully able to ignore their surroundings. Knowing when to increase/decrease the exposure to stimulus is one of the things our owner-trainers count on from their service dog coach.
