8 weeks old and still as cute as ever!

How did they grow from sweet bottle babies to active little toddlers? In another day these wee ones will be ready to go to their new homes and we will wave "so long" to them with Kleenex boxes in hand! They are friendly, happy puppies who have been introduced to people, dogs, and our resident cat.

BELLE

Belle loves people and gets along well with dogs. Belle is currently staying at a foster home in Alliston.

Belle is learning to play with a bunch of different toys. She is great at "sit" and is learning lots of manners and crate skills. Belle is slowly growing into her ears and paws!

Meet Minnie!

Minnie is a sweet snuggly 3.5 month old German Shepherd that just needs to come out of her shell and she will be your BFF for life!

She is a little shy and timid at first meeting, but quickly warms up to you so she can steal your heart!

Minnie is in a home with 2 dogs and a cat, she gets on with them all really well. She has her sit command mastered but needs to work on her leash walking skills.

Outrun, co-founded by Emily Day in 2020, specializes in rehabilitating rescue dogs that face behavioural challenges, particularly those with aggression and anxiety issues. Emily's journey into dog training began after rescuing an aggressive dog named Zip, which inspired her to pursue formal education in applied animal behaviour at the University of Washington. With her extensive experience in the veterinary field and certifications like Karen Pryor and Fear Free, Emily is committed to helping overlooked dogs in shelters get the behavioural support they need to increase their chances of adoption.

Rex's heart is so big and full of love that sometimes he finds it hard to contain himself. He is the king of our hearts here and a favorite.

Smaller than knee-height, this 6 month old pug cross has been learning his basic obedience (sit, down, come) with our team here at Outrun and is one of our most improved dogs in the obedience side of his training. He gets along well with people, children, and dogs. He has not been tested with cats.

Elsie the brown tabby and Alani the orange tabby are a sweet mom and daughter looking for homes. Although they can be shy, they are gentle girls who can be adopted separately or together.

Elsie is 2 years old and she loves to hunt for mice. She enjoys her sun spots during the day, but after dark she is an unequalled huntress of maximum mouse destruction! Beware mice - Elsie is coming for you.

Alani is 4 months old. She has yet to harness her inner huntress but she can stalk the feather duster like there's no tomorrow! We can see a seasoned hunter in her future.

Although Elsie and Alani enjoy a little excitement, these two are actually quite quiet most of the time. Elsie comes running over to meet you when you walk in the room and Alani would rather you come to her.

Thelma is a 12 week old Labradoodle puppy who is looking for a new home. She is smart and saucy. She's been participating in training classes twice a week and is learning so fast! She walks nicely on a leash, has learned Sit and is learning Down. Thelma gets along well with people, dogs and cats.

Lola has been thriving in her foster home. Every weekend her foster family goes on an adventure to different markets, patios, and outdoor events. Lola is lucky enough to go with them!

Lola is a 2 year old Dutch Shepherd cross and lives up to her ancestors expectations by being a vocal dog who loves to alert her people. Although Lola is fantastic with her family, she takes a few minutes (and a few cookies!) to decide if new people will be an ok addition.

Lola had a very limited socialization experience, and has been working on how to appropriately meet new people, dogs, and other animals. With her family she is a big lovebug who would spend the day cuddling if she weren't so busy playing. Bully sticks are a favorite of hers and adding them to an outing is like the icing on the cake!

Although she loves her foster family very much, what Lola would really love is a home to call her own. She came to Outrun in November but she has been in "The System" since May 2023. That's a long time without a family to call your own.

Why I volunteer for Outrun Rescue:

Each time I welcome a foster dog into my home, I’m not just giving them shelter; I’m offering them a bridge between the life they’ve left behind and the loving future that awaits them.

It’s not always easy; in fact, it can be incredibly challenging. But the moment a once-timid dog looks at you with trust in their eyes, knowing they’re finally safe—that’s when you know it’s all worth it.

If you think this little lady looks familiar, you would be right! Cinder(ella) is Walker's momma.

Cinder, and 14 other dogs, came to us a few months ago from a backyard breeder. This beautiful girl is the last of the bunch who is looking for a home. Cinder was very stressed out when she came and her health reflected that stress. As you can see in the second photo, her coat is very thin. She has been on the road to recovery but her coat will probably take some time to grow back in.

Cinder is a high drive, 2 year old border collie. True to her breed, she can be reactive to any fast moving objects and will stalk things that she would like to chase. We are working on building her impulse control. She is so lovely and sweet when interacting with her people.

Cinder was living and moving freely with 30 other dogs in her previous home however when we have introduced her to dogs, she tends to muzzle punch them. She is an athletic girl who enjoys our small assortment of agility equipment.

Cinder will begin participating in classes here at Outrun this week to get her started. We would prefer Cinder to find a home experienced with Border Collies OR a home who intends to take Cinder to some dog training classes.

Leah is a 4 year old Cocker Spaniel. She spent her first years having puppies but now Leah is learning how to be a pet dog. She is quite shy and easily startled by loud noises.

Leah has been participating in our group classes with multiple other dogs. She is learning how to walk on a leash and that people aren't so bad. She has learned how to walk in and out of doors. We have not yet tackled stairs and sometimes we have to carry her if she gets too scared. She is learning quickly and we are optimistic that she will do well.

Although we would love to find Leah a foster home for about two weeks so she can learn how to do stairs, Leah is available for adoption to the right family. At this time we recommend a quiet home due to her tendency to startle with loud sounds. She seems to do well with other dogs when she is on a leash and out with handlers. She does not want to share her food with other dogs so would need to be fed separately from any potential housemates.

Shelter Stray Turned Diabetic Alert Dog

Jackson arrived as a stray from the pound but it was clear pretty quickly how keen this guy was to work. He has a long road ahead of him for training but we are so happy and excited for him.

Jackson started learning his basic obedience during his stay at Outrun Rescue and we had planned to look for an active or working home for him. At 18 months old, this guy had worked through much of his social and emotional growth but he still has a lot to learn.

A few weeks ago, we received a call from a prospective adopter who was looking for a dog that could be trained to become a Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD)! Specifically interested in Jackson, we went over all of the different considerations for a shelter dog becoming a service dog, and also what Jackson would need to be everything the new owners hoped for.

When dogs arrive we do a complete behavioural assessment in several different situations as well as multiple assessments over multiple weeks. This allows us to see the changes that happen as the dog settles in. We track the dogs' progress in training classes and combined with the behaviour assessment, build a picture of what the dogs' needs are in a future home.

Jackson's results showed us that he would excel in a working environment. On his list of potential 'jobs' were service dog work, border services, or tracking. Since Jackson's training was still in the early stages, he had also been listed as a potential pet dog with an active family interested in casually pursuing sport or outdoor activities.

Congratulations to Jackson, now officially a Service Dog In Training (SDIT) and his new Handler. We hope that you love your new job.

A Penny for your thoughts....

Penny arrived as a stray who was not claimed by her owners. We believe she's a 3 yr old boxer cross.

Penny was quite fearful when she arrived but she's recently started participating in our group training classes. We are working to teach her down and place with verbal cues and she is coming along nicely.

Penny gets along well with people and some other dogs. She has not been tested with cats.

~~ 355 days ~~

Roxy has been with us looking for a home for 355 days. Almost one year.

It has been a busy year for her. She went from being used as a breeding dog and having puppies in a bathtub to a whole new place (Outrun) with totally different expectations. She arrived with day old puppies in tow, raised them up right, and sent them all off to their new homes. She was a good mama but it was time for a new chapter in her life.

Roxy has participated in our weekly training classes since last September and has had several big training successes. She has learned how to sit, lie down, and shake a paw. We were surprised and a little sad that she didn't have any basic training when she arrived - it was a clear indicator of how little time was spent with each dog as an individual.

Roxy has worked through the majority of her reactivity and is able to walk past people and dogs without shouting at them - she would still like to chase the small woodland creatures but we are working on that.

Roxy is not an easy dog to find a home. She is turning 9 years old and is a Lab/Boxer/Whippet cross. We would prefer her to find an adult home without other dogs. Although she has lived with other dogs before, she gets stressed with them around and we would love for her to have a nice relaxing retirement.

We added some Omegas to Roxy's breakfast because her hair was brittle and breaking. It's possible that with some long term good nutrition, she won't need the extra supplements but for now her coat looks pretty good with them onboard.

Sweet Beans arrived to us through the local pound. He was microchipped but his owners did not claim him so he found himself here at Outrun.

Beans is a 3 year old Black Labrador cross. He is super friendly and loves his play time. After finishing his two week decompression time this week, he was super excited to find out that he will be allowed to participate in the weekend's training classes! We think his focus might be 4-on-the-floor since the jury's still out that he might be full of jumping beans!

Stay tuned for some Bean updates. Bean is available for adoption but while he is waiting for his family to come forward, he will be learning some basic manners.

Last week, we received an emergency call from a local shelter. They had six 10 to 12 day old puppies found in a forest and were desperately in need of help. The shelter had no one who could bottle feed the orphans.

Unfortunately, these wee ones' mom was found dead. She had porcupine quills in her face and mouth but had been found beside a roadway. They weren't sure if she succumbed to her injuries or if she had been hit by a car ... or perhaps both. Regardless of the cause, our pups' mom had passed over the rainbow bridge.

If you would like to contribute to the care of these puppies, Outrun needs milk replacer and puppy canned food (Esbilac and/or Royal Canin preferred). We are also searching for two or three folding playpens similar to the picture as attached. They make great temporary homes for bottle babies.

Three PURRfect kittens have been staying here with us at Outrun while they get ready for their new adventures! All three are orange tabby. Two are male, one is female (vet checked!).

These 11 week old beauties go by Alice, Simon and Theodore. They are your typical bouncy and silly kittens and tend to have little spurts of jumping bean behaviours!

~ Goldie Lox and the three black Labradors ~

There once was a lady named Goldie Lox and she was looking for a new dog, specifically a black Labrador. She searched for a long time until one day, as she was walking through the forest of different shelters and rescues, she found Outrun.

It so happened that Outrun had three black Labradors all looking for homes! Ms Lox contacted the rescue, but they said that she would need to come out and meet the dogs to see which one was the best fit.

The team at Outrun explained that not all black Labradors were alike and although they were all the same colour, breed and general temperament – that didn’t mean they would all be a good fit for Goldie.

Goldie was a little frustrated that she couldn’t just pick one from the pictures that she felt she resonated with, but she was excited and went out the very next day to meet the dogs. All of the dogs were friendly, good with people and got along well with other dogs – but the rescue asked her to meet each one before she decided which would be the “RIGHT” dog.

The first Labrador she met was Beans. Beans was an adult neutered male. He was named this because when he was happy (which was most of the time), Beans would jump for joy. In fact, you might believe that he may have been full of jumping beans!

The second Labrador she met was Magnolia. Magnolia was an adult spayed female. She was a very serious, no-nonsense sort of dog. She was very down to earth and a Velcro sort of dog.

The last Labrador she met was Finley – an adolescent, neutered male. He was just about the silliest clown of a dog you could meet. As Goldie was trying to ask him to shake a paw, he lay down, rolled upside down and stuck his tongue out.

Goldie has a tough decision to make and when she went to speak with the Outrun team, they suggested that she go home and sleep on it. They said that it's usually helpful for an adopter to sleep on it since bringing home a new family member is a big decision.

Goldie went home to think about her decision and called Outrun the very next day. Who do you think she will adopt?
