We have officially hit our 1 year mark. It feels like we've been here forever & not long at all at the same time.
We know we have been a business for 7.5 years, but opening up here in Liverpool, NS, and making it has made this our most successful year yet.
There were a lot of hurdles along the way, tough economies, pandemics, expenses, family emergencies & losses. But we are here and here to stay.

The best part of grooming is becoming your clients' safe space. Amos struggles with the grooming process and may always struggle, but thankfully he has learned to trust us. Even though the process is still scray for him, we can offer him comfort and safety to get him through it.

Today, we partnered with Heart and Soil Dogs to freshen 13 puppies up for a puppy event today at Firkenstien Brewing in Bridgewater from 2pm-4pm!
These little guys will be up for adoption!!!

This is Lucy.
Lucy started off as a rescue with Heart and Soil Dogs and a foster pup with Brooklyn Adventure Dogs , who ended up being adopted into their home permanently! Lucy struggled a lot with handling, and the reason was unclear. When we first met Lucy we weren't able to handle her on a grooming table without a muzzle, we tried, because this scared, timid, reactive little girl had been through alot and we wanted to make this process stress free. Unfortunately, it wasn't possible, and with the help of her new mom, we tried very hard to give her the best trauma groom possible. Lucy was given a groom that was strictly about removing mats, hygiene care, and comfort. Style and esthetic were last on the list.

The 2nd half of the video is 7 months of a consistent 6 week grooming schedule, muzzle training and desensitization, at home with mom (who is a trainer), compassion, and accommodations that suit her triggers. Giving Lucy a consistent grooming schedule allowed her to gain trust for us, familiarity with the salon and tools, and to become desensitized with the sounds, smells, and energy the grooming process was giving her. Her consistent schedule also gave us, her groomer, the opportunity to trust her, understand her triggers, learn about her care, and become more confident with her behavior and ability to handle her.

Consistency is key. It may not be a fast fix, but with time, it can be a tremendous help for the behaviorally challenged pup.

I'm sure alot of you have heard that getting puppies in for a groom as soon as possible (usually after thier puppy vaccines are all up to date) is for the absolute best! It doesn't just help with thier coat health, but it's a massive benefit for thier behavioral training and desensitization training. Grooming can be overly stimulating even with our best efforts to keep it low stress, the earlier they get comfortable w the process the better!

Mayzie is 14-16weeks old and has already been in once prior to this visit for a nail trim. As you can see her activity level on the table is high, even though this is expected with a puppy, our goal is to minimize it and help her feel safe with the process. Puppy intro grooms are an opportunity to introduce them to all the tools, sounds, the process and the basics. It's nothing but benefits and the puppy has a couple sessions just to feel it all out and respond in a way we can learn from.

We have goals for our dogs coats and style, but first we must conquer the training and behaviour. Working with your puppies at home with brushes, nail trims, handling and desensitization is awesome, but find a groomer right away! No matter your pups breed or coat type the introduction to Grooming, basics -speciality grooms, is 100% beneficial.

My name is Lindsay, and I am the owner and groomer of Howling Hounds Grooming. Back in 2013, I started my apprenticeship in a small local grooming salon in St.johns, NFLD. I started as a bather and quickly became the salon manager and senior groomer. In 2016, it was time to move home w my family, where I created Howling Hounds Grooming with my beagle, Rosie. Rosie was a special needs dog who suffered from anxiety and PTSD from her previous home for 3 yrs. Because of Rosie's needs, it was important to have a safe, stress free place for her to come to work with me every day. That's where the whole concept of Howling Hounds Grooming came from (stress free, kennel free, quiet, and one on one service). To my surprise, this concept catered to 100s of dogs that came to me for service, and before I knew it, Howling Hounds Grooming became known as the "stress-free salon."
I took pride in being able to provide this safe space for my clients and their owners. It was a big eye opener to see how much my salon set up also accommodated the nervous owner w the "unfit for grooming dog." I managed to support a lot of rehabilitation, gaining trust with untrusting dogs and lowering the response to triggers caused by the tools and process of grooming. Through this, I also gained patience and experience on how to understand the body language and reactive behavior of each dog and how to approach their individual needs. I have fallen in love with my style of grooming and have been accused of "being married to my work," and I am... self-proclaimed!
Sadly, in 2022, Rosie passed away due to inflammation in her intestinal track that was predicted to be caused by cancer or genetic disease. However, her lalegacy lives on through my business and the concept. She was the reason for the name, the concept, the reputation, and my passion for grooming. She is everywhere when it comes to Howling Hounds Grooming and is remembered fondly by all the clients and their owners who were able to mee
