The Nova Scotia SPCA accepts animals into its care regardless of their age or health. We also follow no-kill principles which means we do not euthanize animals for space. Unexpected life situations happen and the SPCA strives to be approachable, non-judgemental and understanding. On average, healthy and friendly animals are adopted into loving families in less than two weeks! We take in animals by

appointment only so please call ahead. You simply have to call and arrange an appointment so the shelter can learn about what is the most suitable type of home for your pet. The appointment also allows the shelter to prepare a cozy space for your pet to make the transition as smooth as possible. We understand how difficult it is to surrender a pet and thank all owners who are able to make the best decision for their pet. The weather forecast calls for hot, humid weather this week. Please keep your best bud safe.

Your vehicle – even with the windows down – can quickly reach a temperature that puts your pet at risk of serious illness or death.

When the weather is warm, it’s best to leave your four-legged friend at home. If you can’t, use the drive-through, curbside pickup, or visit pet-friendly businesses to avoid a potentially tragic outcome.

If you encounter an animal in a vehicle that appears to be in distress (exaggerated panting; anxious or staring expression; muscle tremors; lack of coordination; red or blue tongue and lips; convulsions; vomiting; or collapse), call 911 and stay with the animal until officers arrive.

If you’re unsure if an animal is in distress, call the Nova Scotia SPCA - Enforcement at 1-888-703-7722 and speak with the call-taker.

Have you ever met someone that came into your life and changed it for the better? For Dan and Lindsey, that someone was a dog named Ollie. 🐶 When Ollie passed, a hole was left in their hearts. 💔 To honour Ollie’s memory, they wrote a beautiful obituary and encouraged animal lovers to donate so that other dogs like him could be given a chance at a meaningful life. 🐾

It happened in the blink of an eye. One minute, the 7-year-old stray kitty was walking down the street. The next minute, he was airborne, having been grabbed by a large bird of prey. 🦅 His future looked bleak. Thankfully, the angels were watching and he got a second chance at life. Now, he spends his days safely indoors watching Cat TV, play-hunting with his dad, and snoring. 😻

To honour Heaven, an SPCA alumni, Judy made a generous donation to the SPCA’s Sunshine Fund. ☀️ Heaven's love lives on with a beautiful memorial display at the SPCA Veterinary Hospital in Dartmouth. While Judy grieved the loss of Heaven, she started painting again. 🎨 It helped her heart heal and prepare her to help a new pup – a senior sweetie named Stella. 🐶

🐶 Duke’s Story 🐶

I was heartbroken when my owner passed away. The bond we shared was so special. I lost my best friend. At first, I didn’t want to believe it was true. I thought if I stared at the door long enough, it would swing open, and I would see his bright smile once more. 💔

When I walked into the shelter, my head hung low. Just like people, pets mourn too. The staff and volunteers understood what I was going through. They would lay on the floor and comfort me. I never felt alone at the Nova Scotia SPCA.

Healing emotionally takes time, so they worked on my physical needs first. You see, my fur was severely matted. The medical team carefully shaved off all the painful bits. They fixed my hurt paw and treated my infected ears. 🩺 If you’ve lost a loved one, you know the pain never goes away. You always miss them. I spent months grieving and recovering.

101 days later… fate came calling. Just as I had hoped, the door swung open, but there were new faces. Their dog had passed away and they were devastated. We both lost a best friend. In that moment, I knew it was my mission to help this family.

We walked out of the SPCA with our heads held high – together. 🥰

The Nova Scotia SPCA is so much more than a shelter. They are all about second chances for pets and people. But more and more pets come to the SPCA with nowhere else to go. Some never had a home before. Others lost their loved ones. You can help today.

When pets get adopted, we don’t say goodbye. We wish them good luck! 🥰 That’s because our biggest goal is to watch pets prance out with new families. Every dog struts out of the shelter differently. 🐾 For Kai, one of the pups and dogs rescued from the wildfires in the Northwest Territories, her farewell included a nod to our staff and volunteers. 🐶 It felt as if she was saying thank you to our amazing animal loving community. It will continue to take time for the pups and dogs to decompress. But we hope to say “good luck” to all the NWT dogs soon. 💙 Cheers to new beginnings! 🎉

Faced with adversity, Tiny Tim’s optimistic outlook inspired everyone here at the SPCA. 🐾 Found as a stray kitten, Tiny Tim was only a few weeks old. Thanks to the Paws & Support Program, Clyde can continue to do his favourite thing in the world in foster care while his owner is in the hospital. 💙 His owner is happy knowing Clyde is cared for. Transformation Tuesday

Some people may watch this video and think “okay… what is the big deal? Walking dogs.” 🤔 But not our wonder-fur SPCA supporters. 🐾 What we all see is their transformation. 💙 These are some of the 77 dogs and pups who used to be absolutely terrified of everything and everyone. Now, they are learning how to walk on a leash and enjoy playtime in a pool. These everyday things may seem basic but it shows amazing growth and progress. So far, 33 have found loving families. 💞 Some still have a long way to go. But others are finally ready for forever homes to continue their personalized socialization plans. We are looking for special owners to set both the family and dog up for success. Our Story

Proudly following open-admission and no-kill principles, the Nova Scotia SPCA is a registered charity that helps companion animals in need. Every year, more than 16,000 pets are helped through animal rescue, progressive programs, and rehoming opportunities.

Some pets were abandoned, injured, homeless or abused… but they all deserve a second chance.

We work one-on-one with them to rebuild their trust, fully vet them so they are safe and healthy, and give around-the-clock care until they find their forever family.

We do not receive any government funding for our shelters throughout the province. 100% of the money raised in each community stays in that community to help local pets in need. Donate today to make a difference here.
