Round pens are so underrated! I love having four - five panels set up for our individual/recovering horses. It’s so nice to be able to move the mini pen around to all the fresh grass. But for heavens sake these dang greys never stay clean!

Hello everyone,

The death of Bella was absolutely heart breaking. The first vet diagnosed her with a bladder tumor and then after calling in for a second opinion of Dr. James Crawford, I recieved the test results February 18, 2021 and Bella tested positive for EHV- 1 wild type. At this time this is an isolated case, and there are no other sick horses at Grassie Training Center.

There are different strains of EHV 1 that exist in nature. Researchers have shown in a number of studies that neurological disease is more frequently associated with EHV1 strains of a certain mutant genotype RATHER than the wild type aka normal strain (which is less likely to cause neurological disease). As in most cases of herpes we don't really know where it comes from. It is possible this horse could have a dormant case.

We are now under 21 day quarantine as requested of OMAFRA and Dr. James Crawford. We have every sanitation station set up and the east wing of the barn is quarantined and closed off. We are following every protocol offered for disinfecting and stopping any spread of EHV-1 from OMAFRA and Dr. Crawford.

We have designated staff for each side of the barn and we are not co mingling any horses. Temperatures are being taken twice a day and recorded. Boarded horses are permitted to go outside upon a regular recorded temperature. There are people here 24/7 and we have scheduled day shifts and night shifts for these horses.

At this time Grassie Training Center is closed down until our 21 day quarantine is lifted.
