✨Just a typical day at Urgent Care!

We wanted to share just a little bit of insight on what a normal day is like at Oak West Urgent Care!

We spend many of our days busy with hospitalized patients, diagnostic testing and emergency cases. We do surgical procedures, prescribe necessary medications and refer patients to specialty hospitals if needed. We could not do it without this fantastic team (and coffee, of course!) 💜

Seizures can be alarming to witness in our furry friends. Here's what you need to know:

🔍 What is a Seizure?
Seizures involve sudden, uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain, leading to various physical manifestations.

🐱🐶 Signs in Cats & Dogs:
- Uncontrolled Movements: Jerking, twitching, or paddling of limbs.
- Loss of Consciousness: Your pet may seem unresponsive or unaware.
- Excessive Drooling or Salivation: Often seen during or after a seizure.

🤔 What Causes Seizures?
Seizures can result from various factors:
- Epilepsy: A neurological disorder causing recurrent seizures.
- Toxicity: Ingestion of toxins or certain medications.
- Metabolic Disorders: Such as low blood sugar or kidney issues.
- Trauma or Brain Injury: Head trauma can trigger seizures.

🚑 Seeking Veterinary Care:
If your pet experiences a seizure, remain calm. Keep your pet safe from surrounding hazards. Contact your vet immediately for guidance and support.

💡 Managing Seizure Episodes:
- Medication: In cases of recurrent seizures, vets may prescribe medication to manage and reduce seizure frequency.
- Regular Vet Check-ups: Monitoring and regular vet visits are crucial for pets experiencing seizures.

Remember, witnessing a seizure in your pet can be distressing, but with proper veterinary care and support, managing these episodes is possible. 🐾❤️

🐾 New Year's Eve Safety Tips! 🎉

As we gear up to welcome the new year, it's important to keep our furry friends safe during the celebrations! 🐶🐱 Here are some tips to ensure your pets have a stress-free transition into 2024:

🎇 Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet and cozy area away from fireworks or loud noises. Fill it with their favorite toys or blankets to help them feel secure.

🍽️ No Party Food: As tempting as it is to share, avoid feeding your pets party food. Some human treats can be harmful, causing digestive issues or toxicity.

🧨 Firework Safety: Fireworks can spook pets! Keep them indoors, and if possible, use white noise or calming music to drown out the loud sounds.

🚪 Secure Exits: With guests coming and going, ensure your pets can't escape through open doors. Keep them safely indoors to prevent any accidental escapes.

⚠️ Watch the Decorations: Keep streamers, confetti, and noisemakers away from pets. Ingesting these items can cause stomach issues or even blockages.

Remember, a little extra care ensures everyone, including our sweet pets, has a fantastic start to the new year! 🥳🐾

🐾 Holiday Safety Tips for Your Furry Friends! 🎄✨

As we dive into the festive season, we want to make sure your pets stay happy and healthy! Here are some tips to keep in mind:

❌ Avoid Feeding Table Scraps: Those tempting leftovers might seem like a treat, but some foods can be toxic to pets and cause tummy trouble or worse. Stick to pet-safe treats!

🌿 Keep Decor Out of Reach: Plants, candy, ribbons, and other decorations can be hazardous if ingested. Keep them in pet-free zones to avoid any mishaps.

🏡 Designate a Calm Space: With all the hustle and bustle, give your pet a quiet spot to retreat to. A cozy, familiar place can help them relax amidst the festivities.

🕯️ Mind the Candles: Those flickering candles might add ambiance, but they should be placed safely away from wagging tails or curious pets to prevent accidents.

🚫 Toxic Holiday Plants to Avoid:
Mistletoe
Holly
Poinsettias
Pine Needles (from Christmas trees)
Water from the base of Christmas trees

Let's ensure a joyful and safe holiday season for our pets! 🐶🐱 If you have any concerns or suspect your pet has ingested something harmful, contact us immediately.

✨Urgent Care Insights: Urinary Tract Infections

UTIs aren't just a human concern! They can affect our furry friends too. Here's what you need to know:

🔍 Symptoms: Watch out for frequent urination, straining to urinate, blood in urine, or accidents in the house. Lethargy or changes in behavior might also signal a UTI.

🚨 Importance of Veterinary Care: UTIs can be uncomfortable and, if left untreated, may lead to more severe issues like kidney infections. Prompt veterinary care is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment.

⚠️ Risks: Factors such as age, gender, underlying health conditions, or diet might predispose pets to UTIs. Identifying and addressing these risk factors is crucial.

💊 Treatment: Treatment often includes antibiotics and supportive care. Your veterinarian will recommend the best course of action based on your pet's condition.

👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ If you suspect your pet has a UTI, don't wait! Contact your veterinarian or Oak West Urgent Care for assessment and guidance. Early detection and treatment can make all the difference in your pet's comfort and recovery.

Remember, prevention is key! Ensure your pets stay hydrated and maintain good hygiene. Regular check-ups can catch issues early. 🐾❤️

✨ Urgent Care Insights: Gastrointestinal Obstructions in Dogs ✨

Gastrointestinal obstructions in dogs are more common than you might think, and they can lead to serious health issues if not addressed promptly. Today, we want to shed light on this important topic.

🔍 Causes of GI Obstructions:
Dogs are curious creatures, and they often explore the world with their mouths. This can sometimes lead to the ingestion of objects that can cause obstructions. Common culprits include:

Toys: may be chewed and swallowed.
Bones: Cooked bones can splinter and cause blockages.
Clothing: Socks, underwear, or other fabrics
Foreign Objects: Items like plastic, rubber, or even rocks.

🚨 Symptoms of GI Obstructions:
- Vomiting: Frequent vomiting or attempts to vomit.
- Inappetence: Loss of appetite or unwillingness to eat.
- Abdominal Pain: Your dog may show signs of discomfort or a distended abdomen.
- Lethargy: Unusual tiredness or weakness.
- Diarrhea: Sometimes with blood.
- Straining to Defecate: Frequent attempts to pass stool with no success.

🏥 Treatment may include:
- Diagnostic Imaging: X-rays or ultrasounds help pinpoint the location and nature of the obstruction.
- Fluid Therapy: To address dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
- Surgery: In some cases, surgical intervention is necessary to remove the obstruction safely.
- Medication: Your vet may prescribe medications to address pain, inflammation, or secondary issues.
- Postoperative Care: After surgery, your dog will need careful postoperative care, including restricted activity and a modified diet.

Remember, prevention is the best medicine. Keep small objects out of your dog's reach, supervise playtime, and provide appropriate toys. If you suspect an obstruction, don't wait; contact us immediately!🐕❤️

Laughter...as they say, is the best medicine! 😆✨

Now, why are we laughing during what seems like a possibly serious situation? Well, because it wasn't! Rigby is the star of this show - that wiggly little puppy in Nicole's arms 🐶. We were attempting to do an Urgent Care photoshoot with this baby. Although cute and perfect in every way, he didn't necessarily want to be involved in the shoot.

But you know what? We laughed. A lot. And Rigby was definitely enjoying all of the attention!

Maybe we aren't great at taking photos. But we ARE great at Urgent Care medicine! And our team loves each other enough to laugh together daily. 💜

✨October is RVT month!
Registered Veterinary Technicians are the unsung heroes of veterinary medicine. They are your pets advocates in the clinic, with them every step of the way. 🩺

We want to thank our RVT's for their incredible work. These ladies work so hard every day to make sure every pet has the best care. They are the ones who are leading you and your pet into the exam room, discussing your pets history, billing, collecting blood, placing IV catheters, triaging emergencies, and doing anesthetic for surgical patients. 💙

💪They are rock stars, and we could not do this without them!

Please join us in thanking our amazing RVT team!!

On this weeks edition of Urgent Care Insights: Rodenticide Poisoning.

Rodenticides may seem like an effective solution for pest control, but they pose a grave danger to our beloved pets! Here's what you need to know:

🚨 The Danger: Rodenticides often contain anticoagulant chemicals that prevent blood clotting. When ingested by dogs or cats, these toxins can lead to serious health issues, and in some cases, they can be fatal. 😢

🩸 What to Look For: If your furry friend exhibits symptoms such as lethargy, weakness, coughing up blood, nosebleeds, vomiting, or bruising, it could be a sign of rodenticide poisoning. Immediate action is crucial! Seek veterinary care without delay! 🏥

🤔 Why it's Harmful: Anticoagulant rodenticides interfere with the body's ability to form blood clots. This can lead to internal bleeding, affecting vital organs and causing severe health problems. The danger is real, and time is of the essence when it comes to seeking veterinary care. ⏳

🙅‍♂️ Prevention is Key: To protect your pets, choose pet-friendly alternatives for pest control. Keep dangerous substances out of their reach and be vigilant in your surroundings. Our furry companions rely on us to keep them safe! 🚫

Let's spread awareness about the dangers of rodenticide poisoning and emphasize that if you suspect your pet has ingested a rodenticide, immediate vet care is crucial. Share this post to educate fellow pet parents! 🐾❤️

Meet Simon! 💕
Simon is our receptionist, Stephanie's mastiff puppy. This poor boy was not feeling well - he was not eating (very unlike him!), so Steph brought him in to be examined.

🐾We decided to do some x-rays on Simon, and we found that he may have a foreign body in his stomach. We got him started on some IV fluids and some medication to make him feel more comfortable. Before moving him into surgery, we got confirmation of the foreign body with a referral for an ultrasound.

Simon went into surgery with Dr. Moffatt the following day. And in his stomach we found...
An ice cream cone CAT TOY 🍦! Oh Simon!

Thankfully Simon did amazingly due to Steph's incredible post-op care. He loves going to the beach and other adventures with his mama. We are so happy to watch this boy grow - he brings a smile to our faces every day! 💕

Let's shed some light on a crucial topic: Corneal Ulcers. 👀These small but significant injuries to the outer layer of the eye can cause severe pain and affect vision.

Symptoms of a Corneal Ulcer:
- Excessive blinking
- Redness
- Tearing
- Squinting
- Pawing at the eye

✨If your pet is showing any signs of a corneal ulcer, don't delay seeking veterinary care. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications and discomfort.✨

💡 Prevention and Care:
1️⃣ Regular Eye Checks: Just like us, our pets need eye check-ups too. Schedule routine visits to your vet to catch any issues early.
2️⃣ Debris: Keep their surroundings (indoor and outdoor) clean and free from debris that could potentially cause injuries.
3️⃣ Safety First: During playtime or walks, consider protective eyewear if your pet is at risk of eye injury. Allowing your dogs to put their heads out of the window of a moving car can increase risk to eyes!
4️⃣ Avoid Chemicals: Keep cleaning agents and chemicals away from curious paws and noses.

It is important not to blame yourself when an injury like this happens! Dogs and cats can get eye ulcers from all sorts of things, including playing with each other or running into something outside. We see these very often!

✨If you think your pet has a corneal ulcer, please contact your veterinarian right away. We are available Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for urgent appointments. If your vet is unable to see your pet, please call us at 519-871-1560.

We have been experiencing some extreme temperatures this week! We wanted to share some hot weather tips to keep your pets safe this summer:

☀Limit outdoor activity - Lightly exercise your dog only in the cooler times of the day
☀Shade and water - Make sure that your pet always has access to shade and water if outside
☀Keep off of asphalt - If it is too hot for your hand to touch, it is too hot for your pets paws!
☀Understand breed specific limitations - Brachycephalic dogs such as boston terriers, pugs, and bulldogs, have extreme heat limitations. They would prefer to stay inside!
☀Do not leave dogs in hot cars!

SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE:
- Excessive panting
- Bright red gums
- Drooling
- Lethargy/Weakness
- Vomiting

Let us know if you have any questions in the comments below! We hope you and your pets have a safe summer! 💕

Full Testimonial:
"Today we had to rush our beloved cat, Tiger to Oak West Urgent Care as our regular local vet was closed. From the minute we walked in, we were treated like family. I can’t say enough incredible things about the reception, vet and vet techs here. They were all so personable, talked to us one on one multiple times and printed out all the reports and the results. We can’t thank you enough Susan, Dani and Dr. Gillian Egli. Above and beyond any vet experience we have ever had. We truly can’t express how amazing they are. An added bonus, they loved our little orange kitty as much as we do. 5+ stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️"
