Grief after a pet loss is felt by the entire family.

Losing a pet can have traumatic effects on any family member, but children especially have a hard time processing their emotions and may need extra support through the process.

If your child or someone you know may be struggling, please reach out for support. There are numerous ways we can help our children or those we care for process big emotions. Below is a website we wanted to share with you for some ideas on how to help the children in your life. You can visit it at:

In the article, "Facts About Euthanasia (Small Animals)", written by Dr. Laura Eirmann, DVM of Cornell University, "When an owner and veterinarian decide that a pet is suffering or unlikely to make a recovery, euthanasia offers a way to end a pet's pain. The decision is difficult for both the owner and the veterinarian, but we should recognize that sometimes this is the kindest thing we can do in the final stage of a pet's life."

It may be difficult to remember all the times of joy you had with your pet, especially when you are missing them the most and feel so much grief. I know, personally, how healing it can be to remember the moments with your pets that made you laugh or brought you and your family joy.

So today I encourage you to take some time to be alone or be with a loved one. Look through those photos of the pets you are missing. Laugh. Cry. Remember. They were a part of your life for a reason and those memories can help us to "be with them" again, even if for a moment in our memory. We will and can heal from our grief as we learn to experience joy, even through our sadness.

If you'd like, I invite you to post a photo of your beloved pet in the comments and share part of their story. Reliving these memories helps us to keep their memory alive as we share with one another and remember all the fun, quirky or special times we shared with them as a family.

I can't wait to see all these photos as we honour & remember your pets today. What a great tribute to their lives.

In an article written by Lawrence Robinson and Jeanne Segal, Ph.D. on www.helpguide.org, they write that "Many of us share an intense love and bond with our animal companions. For us, a pet is not “just a dog” or “just a cat,” but rather a beloved member of our family, bringing companionship, fun, and joy to our lives. A pet can add structure to your day, keep you active and social, help you to overcome setbacks and challenges in life, and even provide a sense of meaning or purpose. So, when a cherished pet dies, it’s normal to feel racked by grief and loss.

The pain of loss can often feel overwhelming and trigger all sorts of painful and difficult emotions. While some people may not understand the depth of feeling you had for your pet, you should never feel guilty or ashamed about grieving for an animal friend."

"Perhaps the most vital step in coping with the emotions you will feel upon the loss of your pet is acknowledging them. “Let yourself feel–write down your feelings, cry, be angry, call someone. Know that it is all right to be so upset over losing your pet and that it takes time to heal," wrote Susan K. of New York.
