According to the fact sheet, Euthanasia: Making the Decision, on Animal Humane, "While some pets die of old age in the comfort of their own home, many others become seriously ill, get injured in some way, or experience a significantly diminished quality of life as they grow very old. In these situations, it may be necessary for you to consider having your pet euthanized to spare them from pain and suffering. Here are some suggestions for dealing with this difficult decision, as well as some information about the euthanasia procedure itself."

It may be difficult to remember all the times of joy you had with your pet, especially during the holidays when we miss them the most and feel so much grief. I know, personally, how healing it can be to remember the moments with your pets that made you laugh or brought you and your family joy.

So today I encourage you to take some time to be alone or be with a loved one. Look through those photos of the pets you are missing. Laugh. Cry. Remember. They were a part of your life for a reason and those memories can help us to "be with them" again, even if for a moment in our memory. We will and can heal from our grief as we learn to experience joy, even through our sadness.
