Tips for keeping the senior pet happy and healthy!
- Brushing fur regularly to prevent painful matting and tangles. Most older pets are sore and potentially have arthritis so normal grooming for them can be uncomfortable and they will do it less. Brush and go over them with a warm washcloth to groom for them
-Nail trims! Every 6 weeks check your pets nails. They are not as active now so the nails do not wear down on their own. Regular nail trim will prevent nails from growing into the paw pad or the nails length altering the way the pet can walk
-Adding rugs or carpets to floors and stairs. Many older pets do not have the same level of muscle they once did, this can make balancing and preventing their paws from slipping more difficult for them.
-Tracking their weight. Many older pets can have changes going on within their body that we may not be able to tell. Monitoring any weight changes can be a great indication that we may need to look further
-Monitor food and water intake. Increases and especially decreases in intake can be an indication of some bigger changes going on internally with your pet.
-Elevating food and water dishes. This can help relieve discomfort your pet may be experiencing when they are bending down to eat or drink.
-Check their teeth. Many senior pets are living with some degree of dental disease. Improving dental health will greatly improve their quality of life as they age.
-Lowering litter box edges. Many older cats can begin to struggle to climb over the edge of the litter box. As well they may benefit from decreasing the depth of the litter so it is easier to balance on. These changes can help prevent your older kitty from choosing to go to the bathroom on the floor.
-Check in with your vet! Many arthritis and mobility changes we see with older pets can be helped! There are many safe supplements, medications and lifestyle changes to help them live out their senior years.
