Summer Safety Tips
With the hot weather here this week we thought it may be a good time to jump on here with a few reminders to help you prepare for the heatwave and keep your pets cool and safe.
Keeping your pet as cool as possible in the summer is the most important advice we have. Ensure they always have access to plenty of cool, fresh water as well as access to shade when outside.
NEVER leave your pet alone in a car when the temperatures are high, even in the shade with the windows cracked.
Heatstroke can happen in the blink of an eye and can be deadly. It can be caused by things other than being left in the car, like being outside in the heat for too long. Watch for signs that your pet has heatstroke, including:
Excessive panting
Increased heart rate
Disorientation/confusion
Vomiting or diarrhea
Bright red gums
High temperature (over 40 degrees)
Collapse, seizure, coma
Keep pets at home
Leave your pets at home if possible when you need to go out and about.
Keep them comfortable
If it’s hot outside for you, it’s even hotter for your pet.
Take walks, hikes or runs during the cooler hours of the day. When the summer sun bakes our streets and sidewalks, it is probably too hot for your dog’s paws. And if it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s likely too hot for a dog or cat, too. Darker colored pavement and asphalt get even hotter in the sun and can burn sensitive pet paw pads
These are just a few things to keep in mind during the hot days of summer.
When in doubt, dont be afraid to reach out to us and ask.
