To each and every one of you, to each and every one of us, to all impacted by the dreaded diagnosis regardless of where or why….you are seen, you are heard, you are loved. World Cancer Day is observed annually on February 4th to raise awareness of cancer, reduce stigma, and promote equal access to cancer care. Working together we need to reimagine a world where millions of cancer deaths are prevented and access to life-saving cancer treatment and care is equitable for all no matter who you are and where you live.

Dental care throughout the year really does help avoid the necessity let alone the stress and expense of arranging dental surgery for your pet. However, if you feel your pet is experiencing dental pain / issues all of our clinics (with the exception of our Mobile team) are welcoming pre-dental appointments again beginning February 1, 2025. We will do our best to source Canadian produced and owned dental care items for our veterinary teams to discuss with our clients too!

Our EVAH-Hamilton team was unexpectedly (and unavoidably, darn flu bugs!) short staffed on a Saturday when we promised to help the Simcoe and District Humane Society! EVAH-London VT and DVM road trip to the rescue, and together the mighty EVAH crew did such good work 🥰.

A big shoutout to the awesome staff at East Village Animal Hospital in Hamilton!

We had 22 cats in today (and there were 6 others as well), and ONE surgeon handled all 28 spay neuter surgeries! Of course, she has a team of helpers - but when it comes down to the nitty gritty she is on her own!

We are always impressed with their service and care 🐾 ♡

On another note... if you would like to donate to help us with the costs associated with spaying and neutering the pets that come into care you can etransfer [email protected] or go to simcoedhumane.ca

We are there every other week or so, ensuring animals are spayed and neutered. It adds up!

Added to a busy EVAH-London day were a couple of “uh oh what did he eat?!” exploratory emergency surgeries. Before reading the answer, can you guess what the handsome “McLovin” ate? The dark mass is what was removed by our surgeon. The light bits are what it looked like pre-ingestion.
McLovin’s Dad scoured the house and figured it out!
The cat scratching post is wrapped in carpet, and McLovin had managed to peel a bit away and began eating the carpet backing. Not…digestible.
McLovin is in his way home to rest after a successful EVAH emergency surgery and we wish him and his family all the best luck as he recovers tonight.

REHOME THE CONE:
Plastic Cone (aka the cone of happiness!) drop off points are any of our three clinics : London, Hamilton or Kitchener. We are collecting plastic cones your doggie no longer requires, but are still in good shape, to donate to a dog rescue group in need. Their volunteers rescue so many gorgeous dogs who are in desperate need of saving, and almost all require surgeries (which means they all need those plastic cones too!).

Pancreatitis in pets is something we see more often than one might realize!
As much as we all try to abide by a healthy diet for our pets, we all know accidents happen when counters are surfed or walkies are happening on curbside garbage days.
The clinical signs of pancreatitis vary. Common symptoms in pets include:
Abdominal pain or discomfort
Bloated appearance (abdominal distention)
Dehydration
Diarrhea
Fever
Nausea
Lethargy or weakness
Loss of or decrease in appetite
Vomiting (often repeatedly)
Some dogs with pancreatitis may hunch over or assume a “praying position,” in which their hind end stays in the air, with their front legs and head on the floor.

Shelters and Rescues passed their breaking point capacities in 2024, an animal welfare crisis fueled by mass dog breeding/sales in Covid. We at EVAH love seeing owners safely and responsibly working with positive techniques to keep their dogs, doing everything safely possible before coming to a rehoming decision.
Liefdog Training posted such a helpful list of tips today we wanted to share with our EVAH peeps too!

Does your dog guard their food bowl? Let’s rebuild trust and change their emotional response to you approaching them while they have the resource. Here’s how:

1️⃣ Put 1/4 of their meal in the bowl and place it on the floor.
2️⃣ As they eat, step away and toss small, high-value treats (think cheese or ham) into or near the bowl.
3️⃣ Repeat until they’re relaxed and happy, eagerly anticipating those bonus treats.
4️⃣ Gradually move a little closer and repeat these steps until eventually, you’re placing the treats in the bowl or retrieving the bowl to toss a few treats in and replacing it for the dog to consume.

This simple exercise builds positive associations and trust—your presence becomes a good thing!

❗Note: this is only an example—if your dog has a history of resource guarding, please consult a qualified professional prior to attempting this on your own.

One of the most wonderful things about having long term well established hospitals is that we also have long term thankful clients we are honoured to assist year after year. Today our Kitchener team was so moved by Midnight’s family visiting, with a donation in his memory. Office supplies and cleaning supplies haha oh Midnight’s family, you know what his clinic needs! And can you believe they also pre-arranged for these supplies to be shipped every few months to replenish the stock throughout the year?? Let’s all begin 2025 with a sense of gratitude!

Each year inevitably we have at least one after-holiday-season emergency call about a CatCat who nom-nom’d on festive ornaments/trees/ribbons. Bad news bears for Kitty as it often means a high risk and expensive surgery! So a reminder from your EVAH team to please keep a very close watch on doggies and kitties over the holidays to keep them (and your stress level and bank account!) as safe as possible especially when we are closed for the holiday hours.
* Evah holiday hours posted in-clinic, in email auto replies, and in multiple posts on our socials.
