Happy Valentines Day from the Talbot Animal Hospital Staff! ❤️🩷💜

Remember to keep all human valentines gifts safely away from your furry family members!

❤️ Chocolates (and other candies)- Keep these sweet treats our of reach of your pets! This is a crucial health tip anytime of the year.

🩷 Alcohol - Dogs & cats are much more sensitive to alcohol than humans. So make sure that any alcoholic gifts are stored out of reach & don't leave open drinks unattended!

💜 Jewelry or other small gifts - Keep small gifts like Jewelry out of reach as well, some of our more curious pets might mistake them for treats or toys! Making them a risk for ingestion or a choking hazard.

Did you know Rabbits can also suffer from dental disease?🤔

Dental disease can be the result of a variety of factors including; Trauma to the face, genetics, nutritional disease, infectious diseases & diet. 🐰🥦🥕

The treatment of dental disease is based on the cause & severity of the illness.

Your rabbit should have a dental examination performed by your veterinarian at least once a year & you should NEVER attempt to trim a rabbits overgrown teeth without consulting your veterinarian.

There is a common misconception that simply feeding a kibbled diet will protect the teeth from dental disease but when it comes tp pet foods, much of the kibble is swallowed whole and not chewed at all! 🦷

Although, there is more to dental diets than simple kibbling! 🐾

Home care is ideally a daily part of dental health, even brushing just 3-4 times a week and remove most plaque before it can mineralize into tartar! 🦷

Although, not every pet is amenable to hands-on oral care & not every person's scheduled is amenable to it either!

There are some alternative options that we will review as well! ☺️

It should not be surprising that dental health requires periodical professional cleaning regardless of whether the mouth in question belongs to a person, a dog or a cat! 🐶🐱🐾

Home care of the teeth is never perfect & periodically tartar must be properly removed and the tooth surface properly polished and disinfected. 🦷
