DOES APOQUEL AGGRAVATE CANCERS? THE WEBSITE SAYS SO...
Did you enjoy last night's RPM on tick adherence, times to bite and time to transmission of various infections?! I certainly did, particularly the stuff on chemical spot-ons.

My God, the level of side effects (more likely than not, that statement alone...) and the fact that those side effects are never, ever discussed with the pet owners in clinic is truly worrying.

Dr Victoria was great. Soon, it's hoped, we'll get her back to talk about Apoquel, based on something she casually said in Patreon (the extra 15-20mins we do for folk that donate to the show).

Here's the low down - our T cells are a vital component of our immune system. They attack pathogens and constantly scrutinize and destroy tumour cells.

Very handy, we're all agreed.

Apoquel, for inflamed dogs, works by reducing their T-cell response.

And it does work to relieve itch, no doubt. The problem we this side of the fence (folk with questions) have is that, aside product safety, what is the CAUSE of that itch. As conventional vets never seem to realise it's usually kibble / gut / gut flora / yeast related, the worry is that this powerful drug becomes a FIRST response as opposed to a last.

Because there are obviously side effects to immune suppression.

By decreasing your pets system's ability to neutralise cancer, many vets, specifically dermatologists, are concerned by the increasing levels of cancers they have observed in animals on the drug, that Apoquel (and drugs like it) may be fuelling this cancer growth (just may not necessarily INITIATE it).

Side effects listed on the product insert include "vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, anorexia, dermal masses (unspecified), decreased leukocytes, decreased globulins, and increased cholesterol and lipase. Low numbers of dogs in the studies developed demodicosis, NEOPLASIA, pneumonia, bloody diarrhoea, skin and ear infections, UTIs, and histiocytomas".

In fact, the Apoquel website states

"Apoquel may increase the chances of developing serious infections, and may cause existing parasitic skin infestations or pre-existing cancers to get worse."

So what do you know about Apoquel and its cousin, Cytopoint, the cruxes of the atopic response by the conventional veterinary sector?

About as much as me I bet. So we'll be scheduling a show on them soon. As ever, any dirt you have, you know where to find me. In the meantime, I went looking for some. Every single vet website that discusses the drug mentions the fact there is a study showing it DOES NOT cause cancer.

This study was produced by Zoetis, the charming multi-billion manufacturer of said medication.

So rest assured!!

That's Zoetis, with 1.4/5 stars on TrustPilot.

That's Zoetis, manufacturers of other drugs like Librela which are currently under investigation for (potentially) causing more harm than good, fuelled by a 2024 article in the Wall Street Journal article titled “What Killed Their Pets? Owners Blame Meds, but Vets Aren’t Sure". The article states "Health regulators in the U.S. and Europe have received thousands of reports of side effects and are currently conducting reviews".

That's Zoetis, currently under investigation by EU antitrust regulators as it (may have) blocked the market launch of a rival pain medicine for dogs, a move that could result in a hefty fine for the U.S. pet products maker.

Sure why wouldn't you trust a little study they produce that supports their main cash cow.

The fact that study is enough for the entire veterinary profession to turn off their radars and keep on recommending this drug, sort of tells you where we are.

⚠️ Get ready for some harsh truth

By my standards, optimal amount of ANIMAL protein in a dog’s diet is 75-85%. Cats are even more carnivorous and 90-95% of their diet should be ANIMAL protein.

Commercial dog food is only required to include 22% protein BUT this can include protein from plant matter that is not as digestible. A study brought to my attention by Dogs First showed of protein stated in the kibble, less than 75% of it was actually available to the animal. Krogdahl et al. (2004) tested a range of different dry food diets. They found that Eukanuba Puppy stated 27.9% protein, only 20.3% was actually available; Proplan Puppy stated 26.2% protein, only 20.1% was available to the test animals; Royal Canin Puppy stated 21.7% protein, only 16.7% was available; Hill’s Puppy stated 26.8% protein, only 20.8% was available to the animal.

Big pet food companies use less animal protein because it’s expensive and they want to make more money, but you physically can’t make an extruded kibble with 75% animal protein using current manufacturing and processing techniques. I took a kibble manufacturing course at KSU to learn the process myself.

SOMETHING STINKS, AND IT'S NOT JUST THE DRY PET FOOD MANUFACTURING PLANTS...

I see another dry pet food factory is under the spotlight for stinky shenanigans. A Pet Food Industry magazine (link in comments) states:

"Several neighbors within a mile radius of Nestle Purina Petcare's plant in Denver claim "noxious odors" have created symptoms including headaches and nausea."

Say no more.

Actually, say a little more...

Stink is the smell of rotting, fermenting, putrifying ingredients. Or the cooking of same. Think about it, when you open your fridge, does it "stink". When you are cooking good food, does it "stink".

No.

If your fridge stinks, you go looking for the out-of-date meat item that eluded you.

And this isn't obviously isn't the first time pet food factories have been caught using rotten, mouldy ingredients.

Remember when employees of a Mars pet "food" factory sued Mars Inc due to the presence of phosphine gas in the factory?!

For those that don't know, phosphine is a HIGHLY poisonous chemical gas used to kill people in WWII.

"According to the lawsuit, the alleged exposure occurred when the fumigant remained in railcars that entered the plant from a location west of Joplin, causing the eight workers to suffer injuries to their eyes, lungs, respiratory system, and internal organs."

The workers weren't even equipped with PPE (allegedly).

But the factory did have phosphine gas alarms in it!

I say factory, they levelled and concreted over that factory soon after the case went to court. Stange that.

Now, you might ask, WHY would a "food" factory have alarms for a highly toxic poisonous gas everywhere, a gas that shouldn't be in the same town as a food factory?!

Well, they spray it on the incoming SUB-PAR grain to kill any MOULD present.

Honestly.

Now, unlike phosphine gas it seems, the mould is REALLY toxic to pets, producing mycotoxins such as aflatoxin, the most carcinogenic natural substance on the planet and which, studies show, is killing pets eating grain-based pet food.

It would be funny if it wasn't so tragic for the pets consuming the poison.

Sort of reminds me of that bit in the Simpsons when the town gets overrun with tree lizards that risk eating all the local bird eggs but then did something to help Bart and Lisa escape from a bad situation so were now being hailed as heroes by the town.

Skinner: Well, I was wrong; the lizards are a godsend.

Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards?

Skinner: No problem. We simply release wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.

Lisa: But aren't the snakes even worse?

Skinner: Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.

Lisa: But then we're stuck with gorillas!

Skinner: No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death!

And this mouldy-grain issue persists today in grain-containing pet food. Study after study (see my book Feeding Dogs, for more) reveal completely unacceptable, toxic amounts of mycotoxins present in a large percentage of grain-based pet food.

Again, we have on record that grade 1 grain (for humans, meaning clean, not mouldy) is not used in pet food as it costs more. Grade 2 is, which means less clean, a bit more mouldy, a bit more toxic, so feed it to pets (and the animals we eat).

Nor was this Mars factory the only one up to all sorts in the past.

Remember that time Susan Thixton spoke at the Raw Feeding Veterinary Society conference in 2018? It was quite literally unbelievable. She told a stunned audience of another Mars factory where there were (alleged) documented instances of tularaemia killing staff members.

Again, link in bio if you want to learn more (pic used is Susan's too).

What happened there? Oh, they levelled and concreted over that factory too.

Honestly.

Funny isn't it, with all this going on, and with dry pet food poisoning far more humans and children and, of course, though we rarely mention, killing tens of thousands of pets (compared to less than 10 from complete raw dog food?!), that the veterinary industry, sworn to protect our pets, is telling us to beware of feeding pets fresh food. That is MIGHT harm them or humans or the environment or INSERT FEAR.

Something smells, and it ain't just the Mars and Purina pet food factories...
