Info on how hormones affect coat, before and after spay/neuter. Extremely common on wire coats and double coated breeds.

Graag wil ik jullie deze keer wat vertellen over het effect van castratie op de vacht!

Wanneer een hond wordt gesteriliseerd/gecastreerd haal je een deel van de hormoonhuishouding weg.
Deze hormonen werken mee met belangrijke functies zoals botopbouw, stofwisseling en de vachtgroeicyclus.

Wanneer deze hormonen worden weggehaald kan je dus problemen verwachten met bovenstaande.
De hond kan snel te zwaar worden en, afhankelijk van de leeftijd, een onvoldoende volgroeid beenderstelsel ontwikkelen. Het gedrag kan veranderen (zowel positief als negatief). Ook komt incontinentie voor, bij zowel teef als reu.

Maar ook heeft het effect op de vacht.
Wat wij meestal zien:

• Meer wol (dikke vacht)

• Vacht wordt langer

• Krul

• Gekke harde lange haren

• De vacht wordt dof

• De vacht verhaart vaker/het hele jaar door.

Al met al gaat je hond er anders uit zien en is het in veel gevallen moeilijker te onderhouden waardoor een bezoek aan de trimsalon (vaker) genoodzaakt is.

Er zijn ook voordelen bij castratie. De kans op baarmoeder ontsteking, mama-tumoren en teelbalkanker neemt af/verdwijnt door het weghalen van hormonen/verwijderen van de baarmoeder/teelballen.
Ook worden er minder 'oeps' en fun nestjes geboren.

Denk altijd goed na voordat je je hond laat castreren (steriliseren)! Bespreek het goed met zowel dierenarts, trainer (hondenschool) als uw trimmer.

📢 Foster homes needed! 📢

We currently have 70+ cats and kittens in foster care but the babies keep coming! All of our foster homes are full but we are in need of families to give our underaged kittens a safe space to grow in until they are ready for adoption.

Pictured are 4 newborn, orphaned kittens in need of a family to bottle feed them and help them grow. Fosters play a very important role for the homeless and orphaned cats in London, allowing them a chance to survive and become part of a loving family some day.

LACC provides all supplies necessary to care for these babies as well as directions on how to properly care for them. Fostering is incredibly rewarding work and you get to enjoy the sweet cuddles of kittens without getting locked into a 10-20 year commitment! If you've been missing kitty cuddles but aren't in a place to adopt right now, fostering may be for you 🥰

It's a hot one out there. There is a heat advisory in place for Southern Ontario today with humidity levels going as high as 40C. As pet owners, it is crucially important to recognize heat stroke symptoms in dogs, and how to best prevent heat stroke.

Early signs of heatstroke in dogs can include heavy painting and rapid breathing, excessive drooling, dry and sticky gums, bright red gums and tongue, skin that's hot to the touch, and a higher heart rate. Affected dogs may become hyperactive and may have difficulty maintaining balance or may have sudden collapse.

If you see that your dog is suffering from any of these symptoms, what should you do?
- Take immediate action by contact a veterinary hospital
- Poor cool water over your dogs head, stomach, armpits, and feet. Cool cloths may also be applied to these areas (be sure to replace cloths constantly with cool cloths, or else they will retain the heat)
- Ensure there is a continuous flow of cool air across the dog to help increase evaporative heat loss until treatment is received at your veterinary hospital.

It is important your dogs do not stay outside for a long period of time today. In fact, if your dogs are outside, make sure they are outside for a MAXIMUM of 15 minutes, with access to water.

If you see a dog that has been outside for a long period of time, with no supervision, no access to water, and experiencing any of the above symptoms of heat stroke, we strongly advise you call your local police or the Provincial Animal Welfare Hotline 1-833-9-ANIMAL.

As well, if you find a pet alone in a hot vehicle, please take similar action by calling the above number.
