📢 Foster homes needed! 📢

We currently have 70+ cats and kittens in foster care but the babies keep coming! All of our foster homes are full but we are in need of families to give our underaged kittens a safe space to grow in until they are ready for adoption.

Pictured are 4 newborn, orphaned kittens in need of a family to bottle feed them and help them grow. Fosters play a very important role for the homeless and orphaned cats in London, allowing them a chance to survive and become part of a loving family some day.

LACC provides all supplies necessary to care for these babies as well as directions on how to properly care for them. Fostering is incredibly rewarding work and you get to enjoy the sweet cuddles of kittens without getting locked into a 10-20 year commitment! If you've been missing kitty cuddles but aren't in a place to adopt right now, fostering may be for you 🥰

For more information or to fill out a foster application, visit www.accpets.ca and head to the 'Volunteer' section of the website!

🔍 What is National Check The Chip Day?

This special day reminds us of the importance of microchipping our pets and keeping that information up-to-date. Microchipping is a quick procedure that significantly increases the chances of reuniting lost pets with their families.

🔧 How to Celebrate:

1. **Check Your Pet’s Microchip**: Make sure the information linked to your pet’s chip is current. Update any changes in address or contact details with the microchip company. If you pet was microchipped at our clinic, please contact Microchip for Solutions to confirm your contact details.
https://microchipsolutions.com/ 1-877-738-4384
If your pet was not microchipped at our clinic, and you are unsure of where the microchip may be registered, please reach out to a member of our team!

2. **Spread the Word**: Share this reminder with fellow pet owners. The more people who know, the safer our pets will be!

3. Ask your veterinarian to scan the microchip during your pet's annual wellness exam every year. Our team will check your pet for a microchip at the beginning of each appointment. Please remind us if we do not!

4. **Microchip Your Pet**: If your pet isn’t microchipped yet, schedule an appointment with your vet. It’s a simple and affordable way to add an extra layer of protection for your beloved companion.

💡 Fun Fact: Did you know that microchips are about the size of a grain of rice? Despite their small size, they play a huge role in reuniting lost pets with their families.
Let’s come together to make sure our pets are protected and safe. 🐶🐱❤️

😸 Kittens are super active and playful, so make sure they have loads of safe opportunities for exploration and play. Here are some top tips to help set kittens up for success👇
🪶 Wand toys can be a great way to play with them.
💤 Kittens also need lots of sleep for both brain and physical development, so try not to wake a sleeping kitten, no matter how much you might want a cuddle!
🐾 Leave the open cat carrier out in the home for your kitten to sleep in with comfy bedding and perhaps even to play in with a toy mouse or kicker toy. By leaving it out, your kitten will learn the cat carrier is a great place to be and this will make trips outside the home, such as to the veterinary clinic, much less stressful. This is an excellent tip for cats of all ages!!
🏠 If your kitten lives with babies, children or dogs, consider using baby gates with an integrated cat flap to allow your kitten access to quiet places the children and other animals cannot get to. A busy life can be overstimulating or overwhelming sometimes and the kitten will need somewhere it is not disturbed.
📦 Provide plenty of safe spaces for your kitten. Some ideas are; cardboard boxes, igloo beds, creating spaces behind furniture or having raised platforms the kitten can reach, such as windowsills or shelving, so the kitten can feel safe off the ground.

Here is just a small sample of our favourite kitten photos from staff pets! 🤩

The CDC has recently changed the requirements for travel to the US with your dog. Although they have simplified the process for dogs that are arriving from a low risk or rabies free country, dogs are still required to have an ISO microchip, and be over the age of 6 months. Pet owners are still required to fill out the CDC Dog Import Form prior to travel, which is on the CDC website.

Please see the link below for the most recent requirements:

Thanks to Tick Awareness Canada for this post!
❗️We are half way through the year and the number of tick sick dogs just keeps climbing.
🚩This data is provided through participating Veterinary offices from across Canada, and is estimated to represent only 30% of actual cases.
🚩If your pets have been exposed to tick-borne diseases, you are at risk as well.
🚩Tick check your pets, children and yourself often.

Please visit their website for more helpful information on tick awareness, and the importance of tick checks on your furry (and human) family.

If you're unsure whether it's too hot to walk your dog, use the five-second rule: place your hand on the pavement for five seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your pet's paws. Schedule walks for early or late in the day when temperatures are cooler.

Summer is the season when immature blacklegged ticks are active! Did you know that even with regular tick checks, they can be very hard to see (as small as a poppy seed)? That’s why it is important to keep your pet protected against ticks, even as the temperature climbs. Contact your veterinary team for more information.

With the province experiencing a heat wave this week, remember to keep your pet safe. Pets have a limited capacity to deal with the heat, and they can quickly become overwhelmed, leading to heat stroke (learn more about the signs and symptoms at www.ovma.org/petcare/pet-safety-tips). If you see an animal left in a hot car in distress, call 911.

Watch for Signs of Overheating ☀️🔥
Signs of heatstroke: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and uncoordinated movements. If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cooler area, offer water, and contact your vet immediately.
