Main Street Veterinary Services is a veterinary office that practices integrative veterinary medicine. We offer a range of conventional and holistic veterinary services to explore all aspects of good health and preventative medicine for our animal companions. Alternative therapeutic modalities include:
• traditional Chinese herbal medicine
• basic acupuncture
• chiropractic
• basic nutrition
• ho
motoxicology (a branch of medicine that uses homeopathy). We are committed to continually educating ourselves to deepen our understanding of the modalities that we practice as well as to learn about new modalities that will allow us to go above and beyond in helping our patients to heal themselves. We do veterinary care differently. We help people to make high quality, integrative health care choices for their animal companions for a holistic health care approach. We recognize that while we cannot expect our animal companions to live forever, we can significantly improve their quality of life by working with their bodies and offering them the tools they need to heal and empower themselves naturally.

Do you know what heat stroke in dogs looks like?🐾🔥🐾🔥
HOT! HOT! HOT!
1. Hydrated - make sure your pet has access to clean, cool water at all times.
2. Know signs of overheating - excessive panting, bright red tongue, thick and sticky saliva, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness.
3. NEVER leave a pet in the car in hot weather.
4. Test pavement temperature before walking! If you can't hold the back of your hand to hot pavement for five seconds, it is ABSOLUTELY too hot for your pet's paws!
Stay tuned! More hot weather hints to come!🐾🌞🔥☀️
💥 Firework Safety 💥
The long weekend is fast approaching and with that comes big celebrations that include fireworks. These celebrations can be fun for humans but create fear and anxiety in companion animals 🐾and wildlife alike. Here are some tips to help keep your fur kids safe this weekend.
1. Keep your furry friend indoors during firework displays, and make sure to securely close all windows and doors 🚪 leading outside. Startled animals will seek a place to hide and may try to escape through an open door or window.
2. Make sure your pet is wearing a collar and ID tags. Microchips and ID tags can help with the safe return of your pet 🐾 if they do manage to escape outside.
3. Walk your dog before it gets dark to avoid going outside once the fireworks start.
4. If you are lighting fireworks off at your own home, make sure your yard is free of debris before your pet 🐾is allowed back outside as it can be harmful.
5. If possible, keep them busy with toys and treats and/or soothe them with long slow stroking while talking in a calm quiet voice. Do allow them to express their anxiety by pacing around or searching for a place to hide if that is their choice.
6. Make sure your pet 🐾 has access to places where they feel at ease like a crate or other secure spaces.
7. Block out some of the flashing lights by keeping curtains closed and lights on, or by placing a blanket over your animal’s crate.
8. Turn on the TV 📺or stereo to help mask the noises of celebration.
9. Consider using a Thundershirt® or jacket to help your pet 🐾feel comforted.
10. Consider the use of natural calming products like Anzio-VM™, Zylkene® or Composure™ Pro to help reduce their anxiety.
11. If possible, forgo the celebration and stay home with your pet.
12. Even if your animal 🐾doesn’t show signs of distress around fireworks, resist the urge to bring your cat 😺or dog 🐶with you to watch a fireworks display. Animals are far more sensitive to the sounds and smells produced by fireworks.
13. If your companion animal has a history of fear around loud noises or phobias, speak to your veterinary team prior to any fireworks event.

*All lilies are toxic to cats!!*💐🐱
This Easter season make sure your cats do not have access to lilies of any type.
You can also choose plants that are non-toxic for cats:
-Bromeliad
-Easter Cactus
-Orchid
-Gerbera Daisy
-Roses
Although we don't recommend your cat chowing down on them, these plants are a safer choice to have around the house.
See you Monday, April 1st for business as usual!!🐇🐇🐇

"To help with my animals’ oral hygiene, I make a simple paste using coconut oil and Love Bugs. That’s literally it. The Love Bugs help strengthen the microbiome in the mouth and the coconut oil has natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties – they’re the perfect match!" - Julie Anne Lee, Adored Beast Apothecary
Love Bugs Probiotic Dental Paste
It’s super easy to make this. Ready?
Small Dog (or Cat) – mix together 1 tsp of coconut oil and 1/16 tsp of Love Bugs
Large Dog – you may need more, up to a tablespoon
I like to make mine in a glass jar which is good for easy storage of any leftovers.
Mainstreet recommends using a twist of gauze or a fabric gardening glove to clean your pets' teeth - it's gentler and more effective than using a brush!

Instructions for Sardine Dog Biscuits by Moorland Eater🦴🦴🦴
-Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
-Cut a piece of parchment paper to fit your cookie sheet.
-Drain the sardines, but keep the liquid you've drained off.
-Put the sardines in a bowl and roughly mash with a fork.
-Add the flour to the sardines.
-Add one tablespoon of the reserved liquid and mix together to form a dough, adding more liquid as needed without making the dough too wet.
-Briefly knead the dough on a surface dusted with flour to finish bringing it together.
-Put the cut piece of parchment paper on your counter and sprinkle with a little more flour.
-Place the dough on top, sprinkle it and a rolling pin with more flour, then roll out thinly (2-3 mm) into a rough rectangle.
-Take a knife and cut the dough into squares.
-Transfer the baking paper with the biscuits onto a baking tray and put in the oven on a middle shelf.
-Bake until the biscuits are dry and cooked all the way through (40-50 minutes).
-Turning the biscuits over half way through will help to ensure even cooking.
-Leave the cooked biscuits on the wire rack until completely cold then store in an airtight container.
ENJOY!!!

What is it Wednesday? Otodectes cynotis, better known as ear mites, are commonly found in the ear canals of dogs and cats but can also live on the skin surface. They are very contagious and are easily transmitted from one infested animal to another through close contact, but are not contagious to humans. Mites are very hard to see with the naked eye, so diagnosis is best made through microscopic examination. A mite's life cycle takes approximately 3 weeks from egg to adult. Adults live about 2 months and continuously reproduce during this time. Some clinical signs of ear mites include: - Ear irritation which causes ear scratching or head shaking - Dark waxy or crusty discharge from the ear (resembling coffee grounds) - Areas of hair loss resulting from over scratching or over grooming - Crusted rash around or in the ear For more information, please visit the website: https://vcacanada.com/know-your-pet/ear-mites-otodectes-in-cats-and-dogs #earmites #labwork #microscope #microscopicexamination #vetmed #lambeth #lambethvet #ontariovet #holisticvet #vettech #veterinary #londonvet #london #londonontario #lambethontario #vetclinic #londonvetclinic
