If looks could kill I'd be 6ft under. This little guy is a spitfire but I can't help but love his adorable attempts to assure me that he is a big scary snake.

Seeing the change in your animals in their comfort with interacting with you as a keeper and just their change as they grow is such a rewarding thing to see. These two king rat snakes (elaphe carinata)are no exception to that. They have been in my collection a year come next month and the growth and colour changes they've gone through is phenomenal. Along with seeing the difference across two individuals, one so dark and one so bright and yellow. Love these guys and their spunky little personalities even if it comes with a side of musk where the male is concerned.

Been taking some time to really reconnect with some of the critters that haven't been getting the attention they deserve. I love them all to pieces even if they hate me. Each of them are coming into their own personalities and I wouldn't have it any other way. Even if it is them being sassy 99% of the time.

Morganna had a trip to the vet last week due to a gradual weight loss over the past few weeks. We took x rays to confirm it wasn't an issue of spine like her brother Merlin suffered from. Luckily, her spine is straight all the way through her body. She's on some carnivore diet and putting weight back on as we wait for her to p**p to get a f***l done.

Fresh shed and feeling fabulous. Those greens and browns are really coming out. Handling is a big part of building a relationship with these guys and slowly but surely that trust is being built. With his personality in mind we've decided to change Little Foot's name to Bontu after a crocodilian god from Magic the gathering.

It's always rewarding working with an animal and seeing those small steps towards trust grow. Little foot very much is still not my biggest fan but he's slowly coming around.

Taking animals outside for enrichment is one of my favourite things to do. Granted only the animals I trust are able to explore the outdoors but I love seeing their inquisitive behaviour when they go out. Azula is a normal ball python we took in as a rescue and at a year and a half she's close to 4ft long if not already there. She's going to be a beast when she's full grown.

It has been a long hard battle over the last few months since Merlin was diagnosed with scoliosis. Getting him to put weight on was extremely challenging, trying all sorts of feeders to find one that he'd eat consistently to no avail. Unfortunately today he lost the fight. He no longer had the strength to keep fighting and passed away peacefully in my hands. He will be missed, I'm just glad that he's no longer struggling. He'll live on through his sister who is thriving and getting bigger every day.

Finally the two weeks of letting Little Foot settle in undisturbed is up and we had a handling session today. He's definitely not a fan of me but we'll get there.

Well it finally happened. In my year of keeping fire skinks I've found that they like to chill out on top of my head, likely as it offers a good vantage point. They can relax there for hours, but today Harold had to ruin it and take a good p**p on top of my head. Good thing I love him.

It's with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to Carter, my first fire skink to lay eggs. Unfortunately she has passed away due to complications from the whole endeavor. It is with this that I've decided I'm going to be taking a step back from breeding for a while. I'll likely be taking a year or two to get my bearings and truly establish my fire skinks and other animals before I try my hand at it again. There have been a lot of hurdles trying to start this project and I feel that I just need a break. There will be skinks in the future, just down the road a little ways. Loving animals is easy, losing them is the hard part.

The new x-ray from the vet. The kink in his spine between his front legs is much clearer in this image. While his motor function is slightly reduced he's still happy as a clam and loving life.

Today was another trip to the vet for Merlin to get another x-ray to check his scoliosis. It seems to have stabilized after a rapid appearance, here's to hoping it stays that way. Now he gets a weekend of camping to relax.

Carter has started to lay eggs! Found a slug and this little pearly white this morning doing my checkup on her. She's still got more in her but she has started to lay. The countdown is on.

Morganna our resident axanthic fire skink is looking great. She eats like a champ and is always looking for more food. Those colours are stunning as always. A nice contrast to the vibrant reds. Next year we'll hopefully be producing some axanthic babies to spread this amazing morph in Canada.
