Seeing the change in your animals in their comfort with interacting with you as a keeper and just their change as they grow is such a rewarding thing to see. These two king rat snakes (elaphe carinata)are no exception to that. They have been in my collection a year come next month and the growth and colour changes they've gone through is phenomenal. Along with seeing the difference across two individuals, one so dark and one so bright and yellow. Love these guys and their spunky little personalities even if it comes with a side of musk where the male is concerned.

Been taking some time to really reconnect with some of the critters that haven't been getting the attention they deserve. I love them all to pieces even if they hate me. Each of them are coming into their own personalities and I wouldn't have it any other way. Even if it is them being sassy 99% of the time.

Morganna had a trip to the vet last week due to a gradual weight loss over the past few weeks. We took x rays to confirm it wasn't an issue of spine like her brother Merlin suffered from. Luckily, her spine is straight all the way through her body. She's on some carnivore diet and putting weight back on as we wait for her to p**p to get a f***l done.

Fresh shed and feeling fabulous. Those greens and browns are really coming out. Handling is a big part of building a relationship with these guys and slowly but surely that trust is being built. With his personality in mind we've decided to change Little Foot's name to Bontu after a crocodilian god from Magic the gathering.

It's always rewarding working with an animal and seeing those small steps towards trust grow. Little foot very much is still not my biggest fan but he's slowly coming around.

Taking animals outside for enrichment is one of my favourite things to do. Granted only the animals I trust are able to explore the outdoors but I love seeing their inquisitive behaviour when they go out. Azula is a normal ball python we took in as a rescue and at a year and a half she's close to 4ft long if not already there. She's going to be a beast when she's full grown.

It has been a long hard battle over the last few months since Merlin was diagnosed with scoliosis. Getting him to put weight on was extremely challenging, trying all sorts of feeders to find one that he'd eat consistently to no avail. Unfortunately today he lost the fight. He no longer had the strength to keep fighting and passed away peacefully in my hands. He will be missed, I'm just glad that he's no longer struggling. He'll live on through his sister who is thriving and getting bigger every day.

Finally the two weeks of letting Little Foot settle in undisturbed is up and we had a handling session today. He's definitely not a fan of me but we'll get there.

Well it finally happened. In my year of keeping fire skinks I've found that they like to chill out on top of my head, likely as it offers a good vantage point. They can relax there for hours, but today Harold had to ruin it and take a good p**p on top of my head. Good thing I love him.

It's with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to Carter, my first fire skink to lay eggs. Unfortunately she has passed away due to complications from the whole endeavor. It is with this that I've decided I'm going to be taking a step back from breeding for a while. I'll likely be taking a year or two to get my bearings and truly establish my fire skinks and other animals before I try my hand at it again. There have been a lot of hurdles trying to start this project and I feel that I just need a break. There will be skinks in the future, just down the road a little ways. Loving animals is easy, losing them is the hard part.

Today was another trip to the vet for Merlin to get another x-ray to check his scoliosis. It seems to have stabilized after a rapid appearance, here's to hoping it stays that way. Now he gets a weekend of camping to relax.

Carter has started to lay eggs! Found a slug and this little pearly white this morning doing my checkup on her. She's still got more in her but she has started to lay. The countdown is on.

Morganna our resident axanthic fire skink is looking great. She eats like a champ and is always looking for more food. Those colours are stunning as always. A nice contrast to the vibrant reds. Next year we'll hopefully be producing some axanthic babies to spread this amazing morph in Canada.

And we've got signs of eggs! You can see the outlines of the eggs on the belly (the bright pink spots) which means the countdown is on! This will be our first clutch at Huron Perth Exotics. Baby fire skinks incoming! Mom is so gorgeous even in shed.

And we're off! We have our first witnessed lock with our second pairing of fire Skinks. Put them together and in two hours this happened. Let's hope he got the job done! Wish the photo was better but didn't want to interrupt.

Sometimes things don't pan out the way that you expect it to but you adapt. Shortly after Merlin arrived at Huron Perth Exotics, I noticed a lump on his left shoulder blade and to be safe he was taken to the vet to determine the cause. Merlin was diagnosed with congenital scoliosis. Which means that he will not be added to our breeding plans this year or anytime as we don't want to propagate the scoliosis in offspring. This unfortunately means we will not be able to produce axanthic fire skinks this year but will have to wait til next year for his sister to reach breeding size and be checked over to make sure that she doesn't have any scoliosis. As disappointing as this is, the health of our animals and the animals we produce is our top priority. Merlin will live a happy spoiled life here at Huron Perth Exotics as just a pet and maybe outreach animal if we are able to start that venture.

Harold looks fabulous after a fresh shed and spending time with his lady friend Toph. After another week or so and once we have the green light from the vet clinic that following her treatment for parasites that Carter is clear, Harold will be spending some time with a new lady. Thanks again for such an amazing boy!

Mark your calendars! The next reptile expo is September 17th-18th. Huron Perth Exotics will be there. We won't be vending as I don't imagine we'll have baby skinks by then but we'll be wandering the expo both days. I'll be wearing a t-shirt with our logo. Feel free to come up and say hi. I love to talk reptiles, it's getting me to stop that's the hard part.

It looks like we may have had a lock or two between our first fire skink pairing here at Huron Perth Exotics. The tell tale signs are often bite marks on the female's neck. Which you can see on Toph here. So hopefully in about 20 days we'll be able to see eggs in mama toph and then see the eggs once she lays them.

Reptiles are notorious for hiding when they're in discomfort or have a health issue. Last night I had Odogaron, my largest female fire skink out and she was great. She was alert, interactive, bright eyed and this morning things took a turn. When I went to do the daily water change she was gasping for air and extremely lethargic. I have no idea what caused such a dramatic turn but unfortunately she passed away in my hands before I could get out the door to take her to an emergency vet. You will be missed Odogaron, may you have all the super worms and crickets up in skink heaven. Eventually we have to say goodbye to the animals we love, even if we're not ready.

While eggs shouldn't be the staple of a fire skinks diet, they can be used to help add variety to their diet. The skinks certainly love egg day.

The baby king rat snakes arrived safe and sound today from . Now it's time to let them get settled in before the habituating to handling and likely lots of bites begins.
