Well, it finally happened! A momma Guinea laid a nest in the barn and successfully hatched out all but 3 eggs. I moved the 16 hatched keets into a coop with momma Guinea so the cats don’t get them. Let’s hope they reach maturity. I was getting low on my Woodtick army!

I guess it’s that time of year again!!!! I decided to give it one more go, before throwing in the towel.

Good morning everyone!

I hope these beautiful summer days are treating you well.

Update for anyone waiting on the wheaten marans eggs. While fertility has been 100% lately. I’m still only getting between 3-6 eggs a week from that pen. To me this just doesn’t seem worth it to ship. Also with the weather being this warm, eggs don’t seem to travel as well. (I’ve sent and received some, so I know first hand). So instead of sending people false hope, I have decided to cancel the remainder of the wheaten marans orders this year.

I’m sorry to anyone really hoping to get these birds. My hopes are to hatch the few eggs I get a week in hopes to build up the flock. With luck I’ll get a few young pullets and a new c**kerel and that should boost egg production.

Let’s hope next year is better,

Derek.

Sold!

Hello everyone, well after candelling my collected hatching eggs this week to make none had cracks or were porus, I ended up tripping and breaking a flat of eggs.

12 x silver pencilled Wyandotte eggs
11 x Blue/Black Ameraucana eggs
3 x wheaten/blue wheaten marans eggs

Attention Please!

Those who were waiting for wheaten marans hatching eggs.

The girls are laying, but not an exceptional amount. I was hoping to be able to collect a dozen each week to make shipping worth while, however the girls have other plans and maybe they are waiting for full blown summer when I don’t want to be hatching any longer.

This week we are currently sitting at 5 eggs, and likely should hit 7-8 by the end of the weekend, if you were waiting for wheaten marans eggs and you’re okay with that, let me know and I can start sending some eggs out to people. It would be nice if a few other people could help maintain this breed.

I’m obviously going to offer this to everyone on the waiting list first. So if you weren’t on that, please wait or ask to be put on.

Well, I didn’t want to make this post but here it goes……to those of you waiting for light/coronation Sussex eggs, I’m sorry to say that I won’t be able to fill those orders this year. Over the Easter weekend, my old male passed away. I was hoping he would last one more season, but I guess not. I’ve spent most of the week going through sales from previous years to see if anyone who bought eggs or chicks from me still has a male from my line, but no luck.

I will bring some eggs in this year to hatch out a superb male or two, and try again next year!

The hens are laying like crazy, so I think for this year I’m going to use a New Hampshire (buff) male to work on making an F1 generation of buff Sussex. (Buff pullets and light split males). I’m going to leave the coronation hens in too, and see what that yields in the future. Since this first cross will yield sex-linked chicks that should yield a decent carcass, I think it will be fun.

Again, I apologize for the inconvenience if you were waiting for pure Sussex birds this year.

Let’s hope fertility is good, so I can hatch a bunch and start shipping eggs

Made the most of the day before the storm hits. Got the last of my breeders treated for external parasites, plucked butt feathers on the older group of silver pencilled Wyandottes. The old man wasn’t a huge fan…. Look at his face! 😂

Also, the blue/black Ameraucana are laying!!
I finally got a photo of the big boy enjoying his ladies company.

The birds have decided that spring is finally here!!!! First eggs from most pens happened today! Remember I breed from mature hens wherever possible, so I guess the older girls just needed a bit longer to get going.

As always, fertility checks will be done first before shipping starts.

Also got our first Guinea egg today!

A quick look at our second silver pencilled pen! A 2021 male and 2x 2022 hatched pullets. I will also be adding our project blue silver pencilled hen in this pen! Can’t wait to see what they produce.

Don’t mind the male he was fighting with another male during pen cleaning.

Okay, so I have one pen left than I’m open to suggestions on.

I can either make the pen all Black Ameraucana. (2022 pullets and 2020 c**k bird)

Or…

I can mate my best 3 blue hens with a huge black male, to get both blues and blacks. (1 x 2022 pullet, 2 x 2021 hens and 1 x 2020 c**k bird)

What would everyone prefer for this year?

Yesterday was evaluation day on a few birds to see if they met my criteria to be in the breeding pen. I was able to snap a few pics of my BLRW breeding hens. While they aren’t perfect, they definitely have attributes I like and want to breed forward. So here are two hens out of my foundation stock. I also have one splash hen and I will mate them to a blue male.

Haha. Good for a laugh. I hope you all agree.

Thank goodness for young pullets! The black Ameraucana pullets are back in business. I’m hoping to give these girls the full year to fully mature, before breeding from them. This way both egg size and quality will be better. But not bad for a 4 day collection from 3 pullets

Hello Everyone! I hope you are all having a Happy New Year!

This year I thought I would try things a little bit differently for hatching eggs and chicks. So this year we are having an “Interest In” list. This will be similar to a wait list, except I won’t commit you to a certain date. We let the hens decide when they are ready to lay for the year, and when enough eggs are collected and they have had proper fertility checks, we will go to the “Interest In” lists and work our way down the list in order from first to last.
If no one on the “Interest In” wants the eggs that week, then I will post on here for first grabs, before moving to the egg auction sites.
Also, if you express interest in a breed early on in the year, but then later on find them elsewhere and no longer want to be on our list, just let us know and we will take you off.

With that being said, the “Interest In” lists are open. Im thinking if the birds cooperate we should be ready to go beginning of April (temps are usually better then for shipping). We also have our price lists listed below as well as pictures of list of our breeds. I will try get pics for the marans and blue laced red Wyandottes this week.

I hope you all enjoy this year, and happy hatching.

Making the most of our lovely fall weather!
Finally got my feed room tidied up a bit, filled with feed and made my two different rations for the birds! Thankful for these large red barrels I got to store feed, they are awesome. They hold 4 large 25 kg bags, so I’ve moved one into each coop to hold a different ration.

Also got a surprise on Sunday and got our first white egg of the year!!! I decided to get a few white leghorns and a few brown layers when I got my meat birds this year, just to see how long they lay for compared to the heritage birds….. well, the leghorns won the race, the brown layers should start by the weekend, and the Ameraucana’s are getting close as well. Can’t wait to get a pic of the pullet eggs all together. I think the white eggs will really complete the egg basket, and they really help show the true colours of marans eggs by contrast!

I will have to get a pic of how tiny the hatchery leghorns are compared to the standard sized birds though…. It’s pretty funny.

Made use of another great day!!! A big thank you to my grandpa for coming and clearing my chicken p**p pile from behind the barn so it’s clean and ready for this winter!!
We are starting to have a good pile of compost out back, can’t wait to use it maybe next year in the garden.

Cleaning up some feed bags and getting the plastic dishes put away for winter. I might actually be ready for winter for once.

The Australorps sure looked good yesterday when we moved them! Can’t wait to get some pics of them in the sun!

I decided to make the most of today’s nice weather and got a bunch of tasks I’ve been putting off done. Finally got the meat birds butchered, moved the last of the outside mobile pen birds into the barn and sorted by breed. I’ll get pics of some of them this week! Beautiful crop of Ameraucana’s, Australorps and Wyandottes.

Now just to pick up any pails or shovels that were left outside incase we get a snow storm.
