Another winter project done ✅. Charles made me a new medicine cabinet for the tackroom. He used lumber from the farm to make it! It looks great 😊
On to the next project 😮💨.

Tackroom Cleaning Part 2! This morning we thoroughly cleaned and oiled 9 saddles. The spare grooming tools and bin was cleaned as well.
This afternoon, we moved all the medical supplies into the new medicine 💊 cabinet. The traveling horse first aid kit was restocked.
Now all the saddle pads and half pads are getting washed. The tackroom cleaning is a great opportunity for me to take inventory and restock.

Quite a busy and chilly 🥶 weekend! The new feed chart is done with special touches 🌟. The supervisors 🐮 were making sure we got the chores done. We brought home the saddles for thorough cleaning. Much more to get done before the Open Barn Registration Day! Mark it on your calendar 🗓️ Sunday March 16th 🐴 Swiftwind Open Barn & Registration

Winter tackroom cleaning part 1 - Grooming Blanket anyone?! 😁. Yesterday the bridle wall was primed for paint. Today, while doing laundry and dishes, the kids thoroughly cleaned and oiled all the bridles and washed all the grooming tools.
Tackroom cleaning part 2 will be thoroughly scrubbing and oiling saddles and washing girths.
What was your day like with this wet dreary weather?

Finally Equestrian Canada acknowledges the benefits of having cattle and horses in the same pasture. It’s better for their health!
In a study commissioned (and project lead) by Equestrian Canada (EC), which was conducted in 2022, Wilton Consulting Group and Serecon developed this study report called The Canadian Equine Sector: Socio-Economic Insights 2023.
On page 32, the report states “Equines pastured with cattle can support pasture, grassland, and parasite management. The two types of livestock different grasses, which decreases the need to mow pastures. The presence of parasites is typically also decreased.”
An example is worm parasites are species-specific. The cows eats the eggs and larvae in the grass, shedded from horses, the parasites die in the cow. Vice versa for horses eating possible eggs and larvae shedded from cattle. They die in the horse. That information came from my vet.
There are more benefits to have cattle and horses in the same pasture as I see it every day at my farm.

Dodge was up to his pesty antics again with Buddy yesterday. Charles got these clips. Dodge tried to do the same to Major (the donkey) but Major gave it back to him 10-fold 😂🤦🏼♀️🐴

Swiftwind Equine Center started as an outdoor, interactive education program about all aspects of the equine and agriculture industries to meet the growing demand for youths and children to get engaged with their local rural communities. After doing research about similar organizations, there was a noticeable gap in updated knowledge and interactions.
A pilot project occurred at Swiftwind Farms in February 2019 to assess the interest. During this time, the public expressed interest in the program. There were positive comments from parents with enrolled children about the animal interactions and education. Other positive comments referenced the low membership fee. It was mentioned Swiftwind Equine Center was very affordable. Based on the 2019 project and feedback, Swiftwind Equine Center was officially established in January 2020.
During 2019, Swiftwind Equine Center’s curriculum was designed with the following resources:
University of Guelph
American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA)
Ontario Equestrian – incorporating their P’tit Trot program.
Equestrian Canada – incorporating their Learn to Ride English and Western programs.
US 4H resources
Ontario Beef and Canada Beef
Ontario Farmers Association (OFA)
Western Gaming Association
University of Kentucky
University of Minnesota
University of Alberta
Horsemanship resources such as Jeff Sanders
Local dealerships and mechanics for equipment resources
These are just some of the resources used as each topic of the curriculum.
Swiftwind Equine Center also implemented a badges' program. With over thirty badges, the purpose is to encourage members to independently set achievable goals. The main rewards are:
Praises from peers
Personal satisfaction and gratification
A tangible item (a badge) to show others.
The badge is also a visual reminder to members about their accomplishments. In some sessions, a badge goal is incorporated to generate interest. In the previous year, four badges were incorporated in the topics and earned. Since the last Games and Badges’ Day (end of September 2019), two badges were earned independently and three badges earned through topic lessons.
In 2019, Swiftwind Equine Center had 7 field trips, 4 guest speakers, 2 clinics/workshops and 6 special events. Some of these included:
Olympian Selena O’Hanlon
Weagant’s Farm Supply
Equine First Aid Training
Liberty Training workshop
Eighth Line Farm
Greenhawk Kingston
In 2020, there are over 6 events, field trips and clinics scheduled. Two of the repeat public events are Games and Badges’ Day and Christmas Shindig.
