Orpheus Hills

Orpheus Hills We are a local family farm dedicated to the highest level of care for our animals, land, customers, and the environment through our all natural practices.

We are a local family dedicated to the highest level of care for our animals, our land, our customers, and the environment. OUR MISSION

We are working towards providing the most nutritious food in the most natural way possible by building a practice of permaculture farming with an emphasis on natural methods. We operate our farm without using large machinery, chemicals (synthetic or organic), ste

roids, hormones, or antibiotics, and hope to one day have a bioligical system and soil so healthy there will be little to no need to even water our crops. The richness and health of our food comes from growing plants that enrich the soil, supporting the soil health by avoiding tilling and compaction, and cultivating natural and native food sources for our animals that will allow them in turn to give back to the soil by amending it with rich nutrients from their manure. WHY ORPHEUS HILLS

As a young family; global food security, chemical sprays and hormones, and protecting the environment are all issues that we care about deeply, so we decided to start our own farm to produce our own ethically and naturally cultivated food. Since that time, I have studied soil science and horticulture at UBC and continue my research into permaculture and natural farming. Although I come from a rich heritage of farming and ranching in southwest Saskatchewan, I have spent most of my adult life pursuing a career in music. I specialize in Opera and have performed with the VSO, the UBC Opera, and continue to work part time as a conductor, composer, performer, and music educator. Orpheus is an ancient greek figure known for his musical skills, so we thought it would be fun to include that aspect of classical music in the name of our new farm. If you visit at the right time you might just catch me calling in the herd to be checked and handled with a gaelic lullaby or a opera aria.

It’s a unique pleasure to walk through the property, watching all of our crops being cultivated with great care and attention, using natural and organic practices.  That pleasure is shadowed only by the feeling you get when you look up and see the land in all its beauty. How lucky are we t

We never could have guessed how exciting spring can be on a farm.  With everyone’s collective efforts on the farm we’ve got a pretty strong start on our first year of cultivating crops.   It’s so fun watching things grow!! And watching the fruit of our labour.  Big thanks

Our most recently blog post about our adventures in farming!

This weekend we got our tractor out and tilled the soil in preparation for our larger crops of wheat, potatoes, oats, corn, and alfalfa.  While Rayne was on the tractor, Vicki was setting up her irrigation lines and Lisa found this great photo of our house from 100 years ago!

I’ve got farm fresh, free range eggs for sale. The brown ones are Rode Island Reds and the green ones are Americana. I’ve been experimenting with egg recipes lately. My eggs benedict and mini quiches have been quite the hit. The girls gobble them up with surprising gusto 😁

By request, we have decided to sell our natural, grass fed, antibiotic and hormone free Black Angus beef by the cut; below is a list of the different cuts and their cost per pound.

We also took the time to research current beef prices in the Fraser Valley using Superstore as a baseline for the cheapest, lowest quality meat you can get in a grocery store and Whole Foods for a baseline of organic or grass fed beef of a comparable quality.

If you purchase our 1/2 cow, the price is the same as superstore prices and 50-75% cheaper than retail grass fed beef.
If you purchase our 1/4 cow, the price is slightly more than superstore prices, but still 30-50% cheaper than retail grass fed beef.

Our individual pricing, although more expensive than our large order pricing, is still 20-30% cheaper than retail grass fed beef.

Contact us if you want to pick up any cuts; either in Maple Ridge or Vancouver.

We raise hormone, steroid, and antibiotic free beef. We use the land responsibly; caring for our animals by giving them ample pasture to graze, personal daily attention, and proper care. Our animals will live a happy and healthy life, and will never see a feedlot or factory farm. Ethical, sustainable and natural practices are the cornerstone of our farming methods.
