I know everybody wants an update on me, and Ice, and the fundraiser - and it is coming, I promise. But I have two things that I could really use your help with today, especially if you’re itching to help huskies.
The first is a wishlist/fundraiser one of our future “Year of the Huskies” recipient rescues (Rocky Road Husky Rescue) is running for a Keller, a beautiful husky suffering with terrible pain from uveitis (a condition that runs in my family, see 👇👇).
And the second is to ask for your help (in a sort of round about way) to save ALL the animals.
One of our close friends, and our vet, Lucy Blondel, lost her husband Freddy in a tragic motorcycle crash on June 23rd.
To really make that have meaning beyond a headline, I need you to understand who they are - and how much they mean to both Dustin and I.
First and foremost, Lucy was Eve, Ice and Montana’s vet. She saved them (and us) so many times all those years ago when we were young, stupid husky owners that had the clinic on speed dial.
Literally - shout out Port Coquitlam Animal Hospital.
Then after a particularly hectic visit, where I almost passed out IN the vets office after a lumbar puncture, Lucy and I became “sick friends”.
We bonded over our years of illness, horrible treatment by the medical system, and our shared struggle to get back to our lives (her from lyme and me from CD).
She was always one step ahead of me and my inspiration to keep going because, through her story, I could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
So when she met Freddy, a former police officer, now Sheriff, and he swept her off her feet, it really felt like the happily ever after she so greatly deserved.
For the first time in SO long, Lucy was happy and healthy and thriving.
And Freddy. My god, Freddy.
Freddy is that once in a lifetime guy that you read about in books. Handsome, warm, welcoming, kind - and as Lucy said to me yesterday, her eyes welling with tears for the hundredth time that day, the kind of guy you could just throw into a room of strangers and not be worried about.
Everyone loved Freddy.
Everyone. Servers in restaurants, clerks at the courthouse. Hell, I bet even the prisoners he transported LOVED Freddy.
He was Mr. Congeniality.
We’d show up at 11pm at night on their doorstep, Poppy, my aunt Phia (my walking buddy) and I, and Freddy would be trying to stuff drinks in our hands. Good drinks - with fancy booze, special iced cubes, and garnishes that most people don’t have “just kicking around in the fridge”.
And despite their almost 20 year age gap, him and Dustin got on like a house on fire.
They were always like two big kids when we got together as couples, speaking their secret language (French 😂🤣), and probably bitching about how hard it is to put up with Lucy and I.
(Not THAT hard).
So, it just doesn’t seem fair that he went down to surprise her at the track for their second wedding anniversary (after working all weekend), and was killed in a tragic accident.
Now, I’m sure you’re all like, that’s really sad…. heartbreaking, really.
But, Sonia, how does this save dogs?
Lucy saves dogs.
And cats. And parrots. And donkeys.
In her regular everyday job, and in her own time by volunteering.
At least twice a year she flies on her own dime to remote locations and offers her services to spay and neuter clinics and rescue organizations.
…and right now Lucy needs saving.
This week I started a gofundme for all of the expenses that are piling up as she’s facing a life without her person - and to hopefully give her a little breathing room until she’s ready to get back to saving lives.
It would mean so much to me if you could donate, or even share the link so that it could reach those who can.
In honour of Freddy, who brought SO much joy to this world. And for Lucy, who has so many tiny, furry lives left to save - and so much love left to give.
With love ❤️
The annoying sister you never knew you didn't want.
