Karens Kitties Rescue

Karens Kitties Rescue It is our mission to ensure the adoption and placement of rescued cats and kittens in forever homes.

We are primarily focused on pregnant cats, moms with families and orphan kittens. We will however attempt to assist in other areas as we are able. This is a new endeavour as of May 2021, so please work with us as we grow.

AND LYRIC MAKES TWO

Well little Lyric at Barkhouse Pet captured the attention of her new family today. You can tell from the pictures that she is "quite satisfied" with this family's ability to hug and cuddle.

Congratulations to Jennifer and your family

Karens Kitties Rescue will be at Barkhouse Pet this coming weekend for grand re-opening of the new and expanded store.

Our little babies are very excited and have chosen their names. Because mommy was named Luna all these babies have "L" names!

Their next big step is to start interviewing for their forever homes. The questions they ask are really easy.....

Got food??
Do you know how to work a can opener?
Have hands that know how to pet????
Do you know where to get toys???

Come on down and meet your soulmate.........

Karens Kitties Rescue will have adoptable kittens for the grand re-opening of the expanded facility at Barkhouse Pet this coming weekend.

Come out and meet the babies - and just maybe you might take home a beautiful little soul mate.

These kittens have been raised in one of our foster homes and will be moving directly from that home to Barkhouse Pet.

They have never come into contact with the Northern Reach Network kittens and are vaccinated with FVRCP as is normal for our kittens. As mentioned previously this litter and the next we have will be moving directly from foster to adoption to ensure maximum safety.

Karens Kitties Rescue believes in an operation based on total transparency. We will not remove a post because it is a bit uncomfortable. At this point we are now in a position to provide a more comprehensive update.

In a manner of respect for our Adoption Partners and our Foster homes we decided to update our partners first before posting to followers.

Our last intake of the Northern Reach Network kittens [Nyla and her 7 kittens] tested positive for Panleukopenia [most of you will recognize the informal name distemper].

What follows is a description from the American Vet Medical Association.

Feline panleukopenia (also called feline distemper) is a highly contagious, potentially fatal disease of cats caused by the feline panleukopenia virus (FPV, also called feline parvovirus). Kittens are most severely affected. FPV attacks cells that are rapidly growing and dividing, such as those in the lymph nodes, bone marrow, intestines, and developing fetuses. The name "panleukopenia" stems from the damaging effect that FPV has on white blood cells (leukocytes), which the body needs to fight off infection.

It is unfortunate that it can often be masked in young kittens as while they nurse from their mom, the moms immunities are passed to the kitten protecting it from disease. This protection starts to wane as the kittens rely less on moms milk as the only source of nourishment. And it can in fact be the reason for failure to thrive.

Because FPV is everywhere in the environment, almost all kittens and cats are exposed to it at some point in their lives.

--------------- AND WHAT HAPPENS NEXT--------------------

This update will no doubt have many folks asking questions. Let me answer the ones I expect, and if you have others, please feel free to message me personally at the rescue.

----> I HAVE RECENTLY ADOPTED A CAT…..DO I NEED TO BE WORRIED?

All of our adoptable cats in both PetSmart's are given a full examination and the FVRCP vaccine prior to ever entering the Adoption Centers of PetSmart. FVRCP [the P is the protection against Pan Leuk]

All animals in both Owensoundpetsmart and Orangeville PetSmart were in the adoption center prior to the intake of the Nyla and have never come into contact with her.

So the animals that you have adopted in the past month (or prior) have never been in contact with the problem. They are as safe as any young, well cared for kitten and I know you love them.

----> I WAS WANTING TO ADOPT A CAT FROM Karens Kitties Rescue WILL THIS STILL BE POSSIBLE?

We have one set of kittens and a mom that entered a foster home shortly after their birth and prior to the intake of Nyla. These kittens are currently 4 Four weeks old and will likely be available for adoption in late September.

They will be vetted per our normal process but WILL NOT come back to the rescue. Once they are of adoptable status [vaccines and weight] they will move directly to PetSmart.

You will be able to select from those kittens as they are/will be free from any contact.

----> WILL Karens Kitties Rescue STILL HAVE KITTENS GOING FORWARD?

This rescue will not intake further animals through the end of the year.

There is a strict cleaning protocol using a product called Prevail and a methodology. It will be time consuming and obviously must address all areas of both the room and the items therein.

All items that cannot stand a thorough cleaning will need to be disposed of. For those of you who have given me items that I cannot clean, please know that I have been so grateful and will attempt to replace them post cleaning protocol.

Thanks to volunteers, the room and contents will be cleaned as per protocols and left to sit for the remainder of the year. We have decided that we will repeat the cleaning protocol three times out of an abundance of caution.

-----> WILL Karens Kitties Rescue HAVE KITTIES NEXT YEAR?

This is a speed bump in the road.

We want to see many many more little ones, saved and loved.
It personally brings me great joy to see loving kitty parents and the happiness that these little ones are able to attain through your support and adoption.

It is the intention of Karens Kitties Rescue to continue to make a difference in the lives of stray and abandoned animals.

AS ALWAYS
TO OUR FOSTER HOMES, ADOPTION PARTNERS AND OUR WONDERUL FOLLOWERS DONORS AND ADOPTERS......
I want to thank you for your continued support and kind words.
It is very much appreciated beyond what you can imagine.

Karens Kitties Rescue has a regrettable update.
We will be closed to KITTEN/CAT Intakes effective today.

We have encountered a situation with the intake of the last set of kittens from Northern Reach Network.

We have reached out to them and the transport team for assistance and are currently working to resolve the issue.

More details will be provided as the situation evolves and obtains a resolution.

Please be patient with us.

08/18/2024

So some of you may remember that last year, I spoke about the great need in Northern Communities for help with their dogs and kitties. With ZERO vet service in the community, most animals are unable to receive any type of routine care. Clinics are sometimes held by committed organizations, but even those require the provider to fly north to a central location a few times a year. Then there are limited spots. And the owner must have the financial ability to fly their animal to an appointment if they are lucky enough to get one.

Back in July I was asked if I could assist again this year. Since May we have taken in just under 200 animals from our local community and none from up north so I said yes. Unfortunately I was not take all three moms and their kittens due to space limitations despite wishing I could have. I decided to take the mom with the most kittens, as I realized she was less likely to be chosen.

So I would like to introduce you to Nyla and her 7 little babies. She is from [like last year] Wunnumin Lake, a small native remote community located about 1200km north of Markdale.

Her babies are still tiny little folk [these are close in pics] and will not be available for adoption for about 4-5 weeks. Nyla is a super good mommy and bless her heart, she offers all she has to her babies.

Here are some lovely little shots from yesterday for your viewing pleasure. Cant wait till they can run around the foster room!!!

We've been a bit busy with stuff [namely little crazy babies] at the rescue over the last week. But we wanted to share about the lovely clementine and her gorgeous babies. As of this Friday they were two weeks old.

Check out the sweet little faces. Thank you to Chantel for lovingly fostering them and to Natalie for seeing they were NOT born outside. We just love the wonderful people we meet.

So a bit of an update, and a major thank you to all of you who sent me blankets. These are the little condos when I’m finished cleaning in the morning. Obviously, this is not the way they look when I come into clean and hence the major thank you for the blankets. I’ve been able to swap out nice new clean ones each morning. Keep a bag and then do an entire wash of about 12 blankets. The kittens are playing the last two days and relatively normally. That means they’re chasing each other and jumping on each other and biting. Basically learning all the things that kittenslearn in the place stage of growing. The upside is they have not gone back to sucking on each other So if we get another couple of days of this behavior, then they can go down into the foster room and play with all the toys and they could be together

We have a number of thank you's today. Over the past couple of days I have been busy with the little babies....so I apologize that this is overdue.
Linda - Thank you so much for sending the mini litter boxes you found. They are helping sooooo much. The cardboard made it 3 days. 🙂
Kirsten Webb - the mommy downstairs will very much appreciate the food.
Lesli Imhoff Griesbach - Oh you were a godsend. The babies are learning and I have been going through blankies at about 9 a day. Saved me from a mini wash. Now I have a big one LOL
Bella - kitties are so smart! Thank you to you and your mommy and daddy Frank Thomson and Liz Thomson for taking you to PetSmart to get the lovely card. We are going to buy a special toy for all the other foster kittens once it is back in stock.

Karens Kitties Rescue is so grateful to all of you for your generosity. You have no idea what these little surprises mean to me.

So many times I am in desperate need of something and suddenly I head outside and a package is on my door. Or I am popping into PetSmart and someone has kindly left a "little something" for me with the manager.

It is those acts of kindness and support that help make the rescue work we do possible!

These are three little kitties that all have their own condos and some of you may be wondering why. Unfortunately, kittens who lose their mom very early as these little guys often try to nurse on each other’s ge****ls. Unfortunately, that causes huge problems, both internally and externally. There are a couple of ways to combat this.
First is getting them to wear a little onesies like socks Unfortunately I don’t have any of those at the moment
The second is actually giving them separate areas typically as they grow and eat and learn to eat wet and dry, the desire to actually suckle on each other diminishes

We have more news !!!

A little (well not so much yesterday) kitty that Karens Kitties Rescue agreed to take in, has had her kittens this morning. So far there are five new little souls that will be taken care of and loved.

Thank you to Natalie for your dedication to helping this new little mommy. Natalie sat with her on the floor all evening to make sure she was not alone while she was in labour.

In Rescue we often see some hard things......but it is outweighed by these moments of true goodness.

She was the little one that took foreeeeeeeeeeeeeever to grow.
She is finally big enough to get her forever home.

Come take a look at her and see how she has changed.
But she still has her HUGE eyes!

So along with the orange kittens, BOO will be coming to PetSmart this afternoon.

Do you remember Jenni??
Well she had two little ones - a tabby and a "white" kitten we thought. Unfortunately our lovely foster mom had some unexpected commitments and could not foster longer. So Jenni and crew came back yesterday. And look how lovely they are.

The tabby baby we totally understand...... but where the heck did this little siamese/ragdoll or such come from. Looks like this baby must take after Daddy. Except for the little paws....they are ALL mommy.

PS Going to need "J" baby names..... one boy and one girl

Guess what starts MONDAY of this coming week???

NATIONAL ADOPTION WEEK

Karens Kitties Rescue will be partnering with Orangeville
PetSmart and will have some little cuties going in for this special week long event.

Nope we aren't going to post who they are until Monday!
But we will tell you that they are some of the funniest and silliest kittens yet.

If you have been thinking about a kitten......come on down
If you have a kitten, they need a friend.........come on down
You only have a dog, they need a friend.......come on down
Your kids left for school, you need a friend..come on down

We could go on but we know you get the point. Karens Kitties Rescue is setting a lofty objective. We would like to empty the adoption center of kitties by the end of the week!!!

We know you can help us.... and that way we can take in more little babies that are needing help!!!

We look forward to seeing you !!!
