Are you guilty of feeding your dog table scraps? 😬

As much as we know we shouldn’t, those puppy dog eyes can make even the most disciplined pet owner melt. But, it is important to remember that dogs cannot tolerate all the same foods we can.

⛔️Some of the most common NO foods for doggos include:

🦴Onions and garlic
🦴Chocolate
🦴Alcohol
🦴Grapes and raisins
🦴Avocado
🦴Xylitol (artificial sweetener)

Dogs need their own space, just like we do!

✨ We recommend setting up a space for your dog where they feel safe and comfortable. Even if it’s as simple as setting up their bed in a cozy corner with some of their favourite toys

HINT: Consider including hijoey buttons, too! A dedicated space will help with housetraining when you reward them when asked to go chill out in their space.

Pro tip: consistency is key for button training 😌

We recommend you stick to a consistent practice and progress tracking schedule. This is crucial to make sure your dog remembers training cues. Try to aim for at least a quick session every day or every other day when starting out.

If your dog has a tendency to chase after anything that moves instead of staying the course during your walks, start carrying treats with you to keep them focused.

They may think twice about chasing that squirrel if they know there's a tasty alternative with you instead 🦴

Independence is an important part of any training program.

We encourage you to let your pet learn at their own pace. When starting to train, we advise against any manual hand holding to teach button pushing. This will let your dog learn on their own and encourage them to use the button independently 🐶

What are some must-have cleaning products or blankets you’ve been loving recently?

The dog training process is no small commitment and can require lots of positive reinforcement (yummy treats).

🦴We recommend using smaller treats when training. Why?

Quick and easy to eat which means fewer distractions 😅

…But smaller also means more treats – but make sure not to spoil their dinner!

When your doggo learns how to target the button using the treats, transition away from that quickly. Otherwise, they'll only associate the button with a treat, not with multiple actions like walk, water, play, yes, no, etc.

Wondering about talk training for your doggo? 👀

When starting out, we recommend you place buttons near their corresponding actions.

🐕‍🦺 For example, placing the “outside” button near the door or the “walk” button near their leash. This helps to strengthen the connection between the button and the actions.

As the holder of all the treats, you have great power and a great responsibility. 🦴

So when should you use it?

Food and high value treats can be used as very important tools to help speed up your pups learning curve.

They're especially helpful when you're introducing buttons to dogs that are fearful or afraid of new objects or sounds.

But having a "Treat" button can also be problematic.

When you're trying to teach your dog multiple buttons, they may only focus or associate pressing a button with the highest reward (Treats!).

So once you’re confident that your pup knows how to boop or paw the button, transition to other buttons!

And when you're ready to bring back the Treat button, it's equally important that you can say "No"...
..but honestly how can you resist those puppy dog eyes!! 🥺

Remember our hijoey "Treat" button is the best way to teach your pup how to target boop or paw any voice recordable button. But it can also be a great neutral button as soon as you're ready to transition away to other buttons.

What should you do if your pup is scared of the voice-recordable buttons?

Your goal should be looking out for when they start to become more curious about their surroundings, rather than suspicious.

Do NOT expect them to immediately love button if they're typically a fearful dog.

It's okay that they're not okay.

Let them be a dog, sniff around, and ease into it.

It's your job to make the experience as positive as possible.

Be patient. Practice. Build confidence.

Humans already communicate with their dogs every day.

It can start when you say, “What do you want?”

It's the question that has made scientists curious for generations:

"What do we think dogs can understand?"

The answer isn't as simple as you would think.

Studies have shown that dogs' mental abilities are close to a human child age 2 to 3 years old.

Most pups can even be trained to learn hundreds of words.

Whether this is due to evolution or human conditioning, we can all agree that dogs are the best listeners -- regardless if they can't talk.
