Chestnut is an adult male Rottweiler who came to us with severe reactivity issues, especially toward other dogs. His owners had tried everything but couldn't find a solution. He was even told he couldn’t be around other male dogs...until he joined our training program. 🐾
After one month of consistent, targeted training, Chestnut transformed! With the right guidance, he learned to manage his reactivity and now confidently handles interactions he once struggled with. In our behavior modification program, we emphasize the importance of self-regulation, which helps dogs control their impulses. We also advocate for self-reliance, teaching dogs to provide their own comfort. A dog’s sense of comfort should not depend entirely on the owner, as this codependency can become problematic over time, especially with certain dogs. This brings us to our next case.When rehabilitating reactive dogs, we begin by addressing the expression of reactive behaviors. This creates a level of suppression that allows for self-discovery to take place. Following this, we guide the dog through a series of “proofing” experiences to generalize the training protocols. Meet Diesel, a 2-year-old male Boxer.Diesel came to us with a genetic predisposition to be nervously reactive around both people and other dogs. His owners had a hard time controlling him, especially on walks, and were at their wits’ end when they reached out to me for help.During the drop-off, Diesel was extremely reactive to me, as you can see in the video I’ve posted. However, after spending a month in training with us, Diesel became a completely different dog. Meet Margo, a reactive dog who came to us for training, owned by my client Amanda. Amanda adopted Margo from a shelter in LA during a trip back in May. Despite showing signs of severe trauma, Margo just wanted to be loved and be around people. Amanda brought her to Toronto to give her a better life. However, not all stories have happy endings.
Within just 12 hours of arriving in Toronto, Margo and Amanda's senior dog clashed severely, leading to a tragic outcome. Amanda knew Margo needed exposure and training, but the incident happened before she could get her into a program.
Determined to help, Amanda enrolled Margo in our 4-week board and train program at Benridge Canine Services. Throughout the training, we kept Amanda updated with videos and progress reports. At the end of the program, we conducted individual sessions with Amanda and Margo to ensure she could manage and navigate challenging situations effectively.
With all the hard work and dedication, Amanda is incredibly proud of the progress Margo has made. At Benridge Canine Services, we believe no dog is untrainable.
