World Ocean Day! π
We are all connected to the ocean π The whole planet depends on a thriving, healthy ocean for support, and is a critical piece to climate and biodiversity crises solutions.
Being the Earthβs life support system, the ocean covers over 70% of the planet and produces over 70% of our oxygen! Not only does it supply our oxygen and fresh water, but also provides seafood for human consumption, fishmeal to feed animals, and fertilizer for crops. On top of these necessities, the ocean allows humans to have jobs in trades such as fisheries, shipping, tourism, and travel.
There are about 240,000 known species that live in the ocean π¦ Scientists estimate that 91% have yet to be classified, meaning there is possibly as many as 25 million undiscovered marine species!
There is an estimated 171 trillion pieces of plastic waste in our ocean, and in the last 40 years, populations of marine species have been cut in half due to human consumption, urbanization, population growth, and trade increases.
Threats such as climate change, pollution, and habitat destruction. By banding together in education and social action, we can halt biodiversity loss, ensure fish and food for all, and maintain a healthy ocean that can cope with climate change π
