Summer is coming to an end which means school is starting again ๐Ÿ“šbut now that our pets have gotten used to us being home all summer, how will this affect them?๐Ÿง

Like us, pets can get anxiety when routines change, and us leaving for long hours can lead to our pets feeling anxious, lonely and bored - this can even lead to destructive behaviours if not dealt with properly. ๐Ÿ˜ฃWe should always start transitioning them back to being apart from us for long days, similar to how we recommend kids start going to bed earlier to get used to waking up early for school! ๐Ÿฅฑ๐Ÿ˜ดThis can include slowly lengthening the time youโ€™re out of the house, longer walks in the morning and night to tire them out, keeping a consistent bathroom schedule, puzzle toys that can keep them distracted for awhile, etc. While some may assume cats are unbothered, the sudden change can cause stress induced behaviours in them too, as well as birds and most other animals that are used to our presence.๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

๐Ÿ˜“Signs of anxiety:
- Excessive vocalization (barking, howling, squawking)
- Chewing furniture or themselves (this can lead to property damage and self-mutilation from fur/feather loss to scabs)
- Pacing the house or cage
- Urinating in inappropriate places or straining to urinate at all (stress cystitis is quite common in cats)

Depending where we live, these anxiety behaviours can be problematic to neighbours when we have loud screaming birds and constantly barking dogs. ๐ŸซขIf renting a property, it can be troublesome if they start damaging property. Doing trials of us out of the house slowly increasing the length instead of suddenly being gone the whole day is the best way we can mitigate this - and reward! ๐Ÿ˜‡But sometimes the anxiety of being separated is still too high - in this case talk to your veterinarian about some anxiety reducing medications or supplements to help get your pet through this transition. Some will still require a pet sitter mid day to check in, especially in the case of dogs that may not be able to hold their bladder all day. ๐Ÿ’ช

This was unfortunately a big issue during COVID when many people were getting puppies and kittens since they had to work from home, thus having the time for them. ๐ŸคจDue to being unable to physically interact with other people, these dogs were not well socialized - so when owners had to start going back to work there were a lot of behavioural problems. ๐Ÿ˜žThis lead to an influx in shelter animals that struggled with being adopted due to high anxiety and lack of socialization. ๐Ÿ˜ญYears later we still see how some of these โ€œcovid petsโ€ were affected, and many owners are still struggling to work through this anxiety.

โœจIf you feel your pet may already be prone to separation anxiety, then transitioning to the โ€œback to schoolโ€ life should be even longer, and you should definitely consider having a dog walker/pet sitter that can come by on the longer days.

Two kittens available for adoption ๐Ÿพ Please share so we can find them the purrfect home.

Onyx (grey, male) and Lily (black/white, female) are approx. 5 months old. Have had their first FVRCP & rabies vaccine. No virals (FIV/FeLV) have done but can be added into adoption if requested

They will have their last FVRCP booster and Onyx will be neutered by time of adoption.

This is NOT a Bridle Trail Veterinary Clinic Adoption. They were found in a my (Brittany) neighbour's garage and just looking to adopt them out. There is an adoption fee to cover current costs.

They are not a bonded pair, however they do enjoy each other's company & finding them a home together would be wonderful. Adoption fee can be negotiated if you plan to take both of them.

Thanks ๐Ÿพ
Brittany RVT
