Happy Canada Day Everyone! 🇨🇦
We hope you all have as much fun as our project calves Moolissa and Calfleen had on their first controlled turn out in their Canada themed casts!
Both had almost identical open fractures, but as of last weekend they are both healed and cast free (and triple the size!)
Any profits from their sale in the fall will be donated to agricultural programs at Irvine and Yuill school!
Thanks to all our clients for an awesome season!

Case Blast - Cancer Eye in Cattle 🐄👁️
Cancer eye (ocular squamous cell carcinoma) is one of the most common eye cancers in cattle, especially in our white-faced friends.
Early surgical treatment is key to preventing spread and achieving a good outcome.

Two procedures we often do for cancer eye:

▪️Third Eyelid Removal (1st set of images)
This involves removing the nictitating membrane (the “third eyelid”), which is often involved in early tumor growth.
✔ Less invasive
✔ Often done in early or localized cases
✔ May be combined with cryotherapy - which we did use in this case!

▪️Exenteration
A much more extensive surgery where the entire contents of the eye socket are removed, including the eyeball and surrounding tissues.
✔ Used for more advanced or invasive tumors
✔ More aggressive but reduces risk of recurrence
✔ Requires longer healing time

⚖️ Key Difference:
Third eyelid removal is targeted and conservative, while eventration is more radical and used for severe, deep or widespread disease.

⚠️ Toe Amputation Surgical footage. Performed with appropriate regional anesthesia and pain control.

Not every severe foot infection in a cow requires euthanasia.
This video shows a toe amputation performed for advanced septic arthritis. In this case, the goal was not to return the cow to the herd, but to remove the source of pain and infection so she could remain comfortable until she cleared meat withdrawal and could be shipped for slaughter.
For veterinarians and producers salvage procedures like this can be an important tool to improve animal welfare while providing a practical outcome for the animal and owner.

POV: you booked the vet for a real heavy duty pedicure 🐄
Cattle foot trimming isn’t just spa day — healthy hooves = better movement, and happier cows.
Dr Tom went to town on these gnarly toes, giving this girl a summer pasture ready mani-pedi… with power tools 😅
Big shout out to for the use of their tilt chute for our evening foot clinic!
