Looking for an Irish Setter?
Looking for an Irish Setter? If you or your family are in search of one of these delightful dogs, please contact the Irish Setter Club of Canada at irishsetterclubofcanada.com or message us on our page. We have experienced owners and breeders who will be happy to help you find just the right dog for your home and family situation, who will offer advice and who will be happy to tell you all about this beautiful breed.
The national breed club offers this service in hopes of saving people from unhappy experiences when they purchase from back yard breeders, who most often advertise on sites like Kijiji or Craig’s List and who produce puppies only for the money. If you are contemplating purchasing an Irish Setter from one of these sources be sure to request documented proof of all requisite health clearances on both parents. For this breed those clearances include, as the very minimum: thyroid, hips, and genetic testing for early onset and late onset Progressive Retinal Atrophy, which can render a dog blind.
The massive selling websites listed above can also be host to scams, so be alert and aware if someone who claims to have puppies for sale is not forthcoming with information. Often scammers will use photos of other peoples’ dogs to convince potential buyers that they do, indeed, have puppies or dogs for sale. Sadly, the scammers tend to disappear once they have your money, and you end up with no dog
If you are cruising the Canadian Kennel Club’s puppy lists, please be aware that there is NO requirement for health testing for a breeder to list puppies on the CKC site - the only condition a breeder must meet to list on this site is to be a member of the Canadian Kennel Club. Therefore, the onus is on you to ask for the health clearance documentation listed above to ensure your very best chance of getting a healthy, happy dog that will bring you many years of love and pleasure.
Please be aware that anyone advertising a dog for sale as ‘purebred’ must, by law under the Canadian Livestock Pedigree Act, supply you with a registration certificate from the Canadian Kennel Club at no extra cost to you. If someone is not supplying registration papers you need to ask why. It could be that the sire and/or dam of the puppies are not registered, or it could indicate that the breeder is not in good standing with the Canadian Kennel Club. It is also possible that said breeder has broken a non-breeding contract on the sire or dam and will be barred from registering the resultant offspring.
Good luck with your search and please, if there is anything at all we can do to help you find that perfect pet, contact the Irish Setter Club of Canada. All of our members are involved because we love this magnificent breed and we want to protect it - and you - from becoming victims of bad breeding practises.
