As we walk along the wooded trail, Sage, a one-year-old male German Shepherd, uses a neck bite to push Sam, a four-month-old Labradoodle, to the ground. Sam jumps toward Sage, who once again flings the pup to the ground. Sam lies on his back wildly kicking his legs in the air while Sage bites down o...

Even dogs that are small enough to fit in a pizza box can experience very big feelings while on walks. The world is really big when you’re this small and although barking and lunging is easier to manage on the human end, it is still extremely stressful for the dog.

Big shout out to my small dog people who recognize that their dog’s reactive behaviour is a sign of stress and seek out humane ways to help them ✌🏼❤️

This was a super special case for me. It started with labels like “aggressive” , “dominant” and “stubborn” and ended with a greater understanding of canine behaviour, a dog who is no longer stressed and a bond that is stronger than ever.

If you ever start to feel like you’re on opposing teams with your dog , it’s time to ask for help ✌🏼❤️

Proud of Dax and her amazing humans.

If I have to remind my kids 272566363 times how to behave in a restaurant, you will DEFINITELY need to repeat your cues to your dog until the behaviour becomes a habit. Try not to be too much of a dick about it - I know it’s hard sometimes but it’s always harder for the learner.

Habits aren’t formed in days or even years. It takes time, patience and the threat that Santa is watching.

Be kind to your dog….. They’re trying….just Like my kids✌🏼❤️

Last week at training session, we decided to do something a little different.

We decided to do nothing.

Well, not literally nothing but we let Oakley ➡️choose⬅️ what our time together would look like. We went to the field which was beside a busy leash-free. He acknowledged that option but ultimately decided the field would be more fun.

Oakley decided to dig a hole , eat some 💩 🤢, jump on rocks and eventually found a water bottle he was quite content to chew.

Did he learn much? Depends how you define learn. I would argue yes. Did Oakley’s human learn much? Absolutely.

We learned that dogs don’t need to run for hours to be calm and content. We learned that dogs can be in the same environment as other dogs and don’t always have to engage in intense play or even meet each other for socialization to happen.

We learned that when given the chance, dogs will choose to do “dog things “- most of which humans often restrict.

We also learned that if you have a pretty cool relationship with your dog, it doesn’t matter how much freedom they have, they will check to see where you are and will never really roam that far.

This was such a cool reminder of the importance of letting your dog be a dog. Also, that brick head. I just can’t. ❤️✌🏼

As I am now off for the next couple of weeks, please remain patient as the team adjusts to one less body. It may take a little longer to respond to calls and emails but everyone is trying their best! I am so fortunate to have an amazing group of women holding down the fort.
I already miss your dogs and can’t wait to see everyone soon ❤️❤️❤️

Many leash reactive dogs I meet are daycare or dog park regulars. And here’s why:

You take your dog into these environments and they EXPLODE with excitement.

Your dog is at 100% for the entirety of their time away unless you drag them away - some daycares will force breaks with crates.

But once the break time is over, EXPLOSION !💥 .

What your dog is learning 🤔is that other dogs = EXCITEMENT !!! Now, excitement isn’t bad but when we are over the top excited, our brains turn OFF. Thinking can’t happen and therefore poor decisions are made and REHEARSED ( hellooooo dog fights!)

You now want to take your dog on a walk; A dog pops into view and guess what your dog thinks - PLAYTIME! Except! the leash now prevents that and your dog becomes frustrated. What can frustration look like? Barking, lunging and biting. Why can’t they practice the behaviour that we have allowed them to practice every other time they see dogs?

Your dog does not have the cognitive ability to be able to understand that park = play and leash = walk UNLESS YOU TEACH THEM THAT .

Also to be noted - if your dog gets frustrated on leash, that excitement reactivity 😃😃 can definitely turn into aggressive reactivity real fast 🤬🤬 ➡️Guess what is causing (in your dogs mind) the negative feelings of frustration ? That other dog they can’t get at! “If i can make that other dog go away I will no longer feel this way” .

It is SO important that you choose a daycare that is CAPABLE of encouraging your dog to take breaks and practice CALM behaviour. I hate to break it to you but 20 dogs in a room is a recipe for disaster and it is unhealthy and unfair for any dog ( or human)to play until they drop. We are setting these poor dogs up for failure.

⚡️Dogs at daycare and dog parks should be able to play if they want , be called away if needed and say NO if they want. ⚡️

If that can’t happen, your daycare isn’t looking out for the best interest of that animal. And maybe they don’t know how and that’s another post in itself.

If you have a leash reactive dog that is a daycare or dog park regular, This MIGHT be why.

If you own, like, work with or have any interest in dogs this is the book for you!

Doggie Language provides visuals of dog body language to help you better understand their more silent language.

I highly recommend this book for any household with kids.

Aka our Play & Learn !

I have been waiting for YEARS to offer a daycare that I really feel puts the well-being of the dog first.

What you can expect :

1. Structured Play - short play intervals between dogs with similar personalities and play styles.

2. Lots of outdoor opportunities - leashed walks to sniff, explore and work on those leash skills !

3. Downtime! Independent play with mentally stimulating games and puzzles and naps daily. This is not only to prevent fights due to overtired/ overstimulation but it helps your dog learn to relax in the presence of other dogs.

4. 4:1 dog to human ratio.

5. Learning. One on one time with our team to work on the basics. These are skills that will go HOME with your dog.

If you think your dog would benefit from our play & learn , please email [email protected]!

We are super proud to be carrying cbd oil for pets.

Cbd is a safe and natural way to relieve mild stress, anxiety, pain and inflammation.. Cbd is not a substitute for medication prescribed by your veterinarian but for those that are weary of pharmaceuticals this could be a great first step.

Because the cbd industry is unregulated, it’s super important to ensure your cbd product has been tested and does not contain any THC or any other chemicals that might be harmful for your pet. Baked goods has been through rigorous testing AND was created by a fellow Canadian woman entrepreneur 💪🏼 🇨🇦

You can find this and other natural stress and anxiety relievers at our new location

Autonomy Definition: self-directing freedom and especially moral independence

It can be tough for our dogs living in a human world. So many behavioural cases I see are simply because the dog doesn’t get to do what they like.

As much as possible give your dog ample opportunity to do dog stuff - You will have a happy dog, I promise ❤️✌🏼

Has your dog ever snuffled?

A snuffle Mat is a simple way to allow your dogs to practice foraging. Hide their kibble in the mat and watch them use that sniffer 👃🏼

We are proud to offer these handmade snuffle mats from . All are handmade from another amazing Canadian woman entrepreneur (🙌🏼) they are so soft that they have doubled as pillows for the dogs that have used them so far.

If you are looking for easy ways to add mental stimulation for your dog , a snuffle mat instead of a bowl is the way to go ❤️✌🏼
