Happy New Year! What a year! Hoping to have more adoptions in 2025, less surrenders and the continued support of you all. Many thanks to my fosters, volunteers and supporters! I am usually overwhelmed but hope to be on my A game next year!
If you are looking for end of the year tax receipts you will be happy to know the government has extended charitable donations to February.
If you have parts of a credit card gift card left you can donate those small amounts through our Canada Helps page: https://www.canadahelps.org/gp/18298/
Or you can send an emt to Helping Homeless Pets at [email protected] and say the donation is for CCR
Wishing you all a great 2025!

Ever wonder how chinchillas came to North America? Back in the 1920s MF Chapman brought chinchillas to North America. Chinchillas were used for the fur industry and it was only when fur declined that chins really entered the pet market. This article has some amazing pics and the full story. https://www.sunsetchinchillas.com/MFChapmanChinchillaHistory.shtml

This is a common question that comes up, what to use when transporting your chin. Many people use a cat carrier which works fine. I use chinchilla carriers from Ryerson that are all metal. They have a variety of sizes which helps if you need to move multiple chins. I add fleece or shavings on the bottom along with a handful of hay. I do not hang water bottles on carriers while transporting. When I get to where I am I will hang the water bottle then. You should always have enough carriers for the number of pets you have in case of emergency. What do you use as a carrier?

If you have turned on your furnace don’t forget to check the temp where your chins are. I close the vents in my chin room so they stay cool.

I have seen a lot of places say that chins need dust x amount per week. That is not what I recommend. If you live in an area with high humidity, dust more. If you live in a dry area dust less. I tend to dust more in the summer and less in the winter. Winters are dry here and I don’t want dried out ears or feet! Use your own judgement as you can see if your chin looks like they need more or less dust!

One of the hardest things to do when you own a pair of chins is to separate them because they no longer get along. Chin fights can be deadly so it is important to pay attention to your pair and know the signs of possible trouble. If you own a pair you can have 2 food bowls, 2 water bottles and multiple hidey areas. It doesn’t guarantee your pair will stay together but may help prevent issues.
Red flags should always be taken seriously.
1. Bickering- it is normal for a pair to bicker occasionally. You may hear a kack if one bothers the other BUT it should not get loud and be non stop. If you hear your pair bickering a lot this is a red flag.
2. Chasing- if one chin is chasing another or causing one chin to hide all the time this is a red flag.
3. Fur found in cage- if you wake up and find tufts of fur in the cage this is a red flag.
4. Blood or wounds- huge red flag

The chins in the pic seemed to be fine but there was a lot of fur found in their cage a few mornings in a row. I separated them and chose to err on the side of caution.

Internet health advice should NEVER replace a vet visit. Chinchillas are very good at hiding illness and when you notice symptoms, chances are that your chin needs vet care asap. Having a few items on hand can help you if your chin shows symptoms before your vet visit. Saline can be used if your chin is showing signs of an eye infection. A vet will do a stain to ensure there is no ulcer or a more serious issue. If your chin stops p**ping or their p**p is tiny giving simethicone can help with gas before a vet would get motility drugs into your chin. Going off their food is always a sign of something and having critical care on hand allows you to keep your chin eating before a vet finds out what is going on. Remember, having a vet savvy in chins is one of the most important things!

Friday Rescue Spotlight
Every Friday I will be posting one of the many rescues we have. Meet Wednesday who is under one year and was an impulse buy at a pet store. With no idea on what chins need, the person got home and realized they were not prepared for a chinchilla. Thankfully one of our fosters had a spot and Wednesday has settled in. Wednesday has some spiciness and shows off her chin attitude to her foster dad. Not so much towards her foster mom. She is fostered in North York.

The best diet for chins is a simple one. There are times when a timothy hay pellet is necessary but for most chins, an alfalfa one is best. Treats are never necessary but you can give safe ones. Avoid fruits, veggies, seeds or nuts.

CCR

The Canadian Chinchilla Rescue was started by me, Tanya as a chinchilla owner. There was a need for chinchilla rescue and I thought it would be easy to help find chins a new home. With grand plans of having a foster base across Canada I created Canadian Chinchilla Rescue. I did have fosters in 3 provinces (Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec) before the work involved soon made me realize one person can’t pull off a national rescue and work a fill time job. I scaled back and have mostly stuck with GTA fosters. CCR is a small rescue and have only limited space for chinchillas. All chinchillas are taken in with the goal of finding them a forever home and to leave the rescue.
